Flows On Scales Of 150 Mpc?, K. R. Müller, W. Freudling, R. Watkins, G. Wegner

Dartmouth Scholarship

In order to investigate the reality of large-scale streaming motion on scales of up to 150 Mpc, we have studied the peculiar motions of ~200 early-type galaxies in three directions of the South Equatorial Strip at distances out to ~20,000 km s-1. The new Automatic Plate Measuring Facility South Equatorial Strip Catalog (-175<δ<+25) was used to select the sample of field galaxies in three directions: (1) 15h10m-16h10m; (2) 20h30m-21h50m; (3) 00h10m-01h30m. New R-band CCD photometry and spectroscopic data for the galaxies are used. The fundamental plane distance-indicator …

Face Detection Using Templates, Niels Da Vitoria Lobo, Young Ho Kwon Nov 1998

Face Detection Using Templates, Niels Da Vitoria Lobo, Young Ho Kwon

UCF Patents

Disclosed is a two step process for automatically finding a human face in an electronically digitized image (for example, taken by handheld digital cameras and digital video-cameras such as cam-corders), and for confirming the existence of the face by examining facial features. Step 1 is to detect the human face and is accomplished in stages that include enhancing the digital image with a blurring filter and edge enhancer in order to better set forth the unique facial features such as wrinkles, and curved shapes of a facial image. After prefiltering, preselected curves sometimes referred to as snakelets are dropped on …

Specific Heat And Transport “Anomalies” In Mixed Alkali Glasses, Peter F. Green, Richard K. Brow, James J. Hudgens Nov 1998

Specific Heat And Transport “Anomalies” In Mixed Alkali Glasses, Peter F. Green, Richard K. Brow, James J. Hudgens

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We show that changes in the relative mole fractions of Li2O and Na2O in alkali metaphosphate glasses lead to “anomalies” in the specific heat and structural relaxations. The heat capacity change between the liquid and glassy states, Δcp(Tg), at the calorimetric glass transition temperature, Tg, exhibits a minimum when the mole fractions of Li2O and Na2O are comparable. Moreover, systematic changes in the temperature dependence of the viscosity, η, i.e., changes in the “fragility” of the system, accompany these changes in mole fraction. This observed dependence …

Structural Basis Of Agonist-Induced Desensitization And Sequestration Of The P2y2 Nucleotide Receptor: Consequences Of Truncation Of The C Terminus, Richard C. Garrad, Miguel A. Otero, Laurie Erb, Patty M. Theiss, Lane L. Clarke, Fernando A. Gonzalez, John T. Turner, Gary A. Weisman Nov 1998

Structural Basis Of Agonist-Induced Desensitization And Sequestration Of The P2y2 Nucleotide Receptor: Consequences Of Truncation Of The C Terminus, Richard C. Garrad, Miguel A. Otero, Laurie Erb, Patty M. Theiss, Lane L. Clarke, Fernando A. Gonzalez, John T. Turner, Gary A. Weisman

College of Health and Human Services

Molecular determinants of P2Y receptor desensitization and sequestration have been investigated. Wild-type P2Y receptors and a series of five C-terminal truncation mutants of the receptor were epitope-tagged and stably expressed in 1321N1 cells. These constructs were used to assess the importance of the intracellular C terminus on 1) UTP-stimulated increases in intracellular calcium concentration, 2) homologous desensitization of the receptor, and 3) agonist-induced decreases in cell-surface density (receptor sequestration) of epitope-tagged receptors using fluorescence-activated cell sorting. The potency and efficacy of UTP were similar for the wild-type and all mutant P2Y receptors. Truncation of 18 or more amino acids from …
