The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Addressing Violence In Public Schools Zero Tolerance Vs. Ecologically Based Programs: A Policy Analysis, Lee A. Lindsey Jr

There are a number of schools in several States across the nation that have implemented violence prevention programs to address these concerns. Some States incorporate use predetermined consequences for specific violent behavior by implementing zero-tolerance approaches. Other States incorporate community resources to help solve the problem of violence within public schools. This thesis will take a look at the effectiveness of choosing approach over the other.

Adjustment And Developmental Outcomes Of Students Engaged In Service Learning, Michelle R. Dunlap Dec 1998

Adjustment And Developmental Outcomes Of Students Engaged In Service Learning, Michelle R. Dunlap

Human Development Faculty Publications

In an effort to better understand the psychosocial and adjustment processes experienced by college students engaged in service learning, 22 randomly selected reflection journals were content-analyzed from a class of 44 child development students who had been engaged in service learning in a variety settings. Three of the themes that emerged in the journals involved students: feeling awkward during the first visits; feeling uncertain about redirecting children's misbehavior; and having ambivalent feelings when bringing their service learning experiences to an end. The coping mechanisms and resources upon which students draw to successfully grow beyond these initial challenges are discussed, as …

New Caribbean Locality For The Extinct Great White Shark Carcharodon, Clare Flemming, Donald A. Mcfarlane Dec 1998

New Caribbean Locality For The Extinct Great White Shark Carcharodon, Clare Flemming, Donald A. Mcfarlane

WM Keck Science Faculty Papers

Carcharodon is represented by a single upper tooth (Fig. 1) which we extracted from the eroding Pliocene limestone wall, some six meters above the floor at the northern end of Darby Sink. Much of the tooth is missing, but the remaining portion includes features diagnostic of this genus. The tooth conforms in size and morphology to Carcharodon megalodon (Agassiz, 1843), an extinct great white shark.

Liberalized Telecommunications Trade In The Wto: Implications For Universal Service Policy, Taunya L. Mclarty Dec 1998

Liberalized Telecommunications Trade In The Wto: Implications For Universal Service Policy, Taunya L. Mclarty

Federal Communications Law Journal

The basic telecommunications commitments associated with the General Agreement on Trade in Services significantly affect market liberalization. Ultimately, a domestic legal framework that incorporates, as a part, some cost sharing for the furtherance of socially beneficial domestic policy would increase universal access benefits for some. Any detriment to those who are bearing the costs of it would be offset by the benefits that are obtained from GATS commitments on telecommunications that reduced trade barriers on services. Thus, this domestic/international arrangement could increase access to basic and enhanced services for some without decreasing universal service to any.

Sensitive Analysis Of Serum 3Α, 7Α, 12Α,24-Tetrahydroxy-5Β- Cholestan-26-Oic Acid Diastereomers Using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry And Its Application In Peroxisomal D-Bifunctional Protein Deficiency, P. Vreken, A. Van Rooij, S. Denis, E. G. Van Grunsven, Dean A. Cuebas, R. J.A. Wanders

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

The final steps in bile acid biosynthesis take place in peroxisomes and involve oxidative cleavage of the side chain of C27-5β-cholestanoic acids leading to the formation of the primary bile acids cholic acid and chenodeoxycholic acid. The enoyl-CoA hydratase and β-hydroxy acyl-CoA dehydrogenase reactions involved in the chain shortening of C27-5β- cholestanoic acids are catalyzed by the recently identified peroxisomal D- bifunctional protein. Deficiencies of D-bifunctional protein lead, among others, to an accumulation of 3α,7α,12α,24-tetrahydroxy-5β-cholest-26- oic acid (varanic acid). The ability to resolve the four C24, C25 diastereomers of varanic acid has, so far, only been carried out on biliary …

Discrimination In The Small Business Credit Market, David G. Blanchflower, Phillip B. Levine, David J. Zimmerman

Economics Faculty Scholarship

This paper uses data from the 1993 National Survey of Small Business Finances to determine the extent to which minority-owned small businesses face constraints in the credit market beyond those faced by white-owned small businesses. First, we present qualitative evidence indicating that black- and white-owned firms report similar concerns about the factors that may affect their businesses except that blacks are far more likely to report problems with credit availability. Second, we conduct an econometric analysis of loan denial probabilities by race and find that black-owned small businesses are almost three times more likely to have a loan application denied. …

Muir Center Newsletters (1981-2015)

NEWSLETTER Winter 1998-99 The Importance of John Muir's First Public Lecture, Sacramento, 1876 by Steve Pauly, Pleasant Hill, CA INTRODUCTION his article focuses on Muir's first public lecture and its importance as one of several turning points in his evolution as a public figure. The venue was the Congregational Church in Sacramento on January 25, 1876. The lecture was the fifth in a series sponsored by the Sacramento Literary Institute. Muir approached this task with fear, began poorly and with apology, finally recalled his topic, enthralled the large audience with his discussion and illustration of the current and ancient glaciers …
