The Future Of Humanitarian Demining, Andy Smith
The Future Of Humanitarian Demining, Andy Smith
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
At present, humanitarian demining in most affected areas begins with a United Nations(UN)-led emergency response, which is controlled by ex-pats, who usually have a military background and who are largely paid for by "ear-marked" donations from UN countries. Those donations sometimes take the form of staff and goods. At the same time, as the UN arrives (and sometimes before), the specialist charitably-funded clearance groups, which are funded by an individual government's aid budget or by trusts and donor charities, tend to move into the area. The HALO Trust makes a point of, whenever possible, being in dangerous areas first. The …

Grizzly Bear Digging: Effects On Subalpine Meadow Plants In Relation To Mineral Nitrogen Availability, Sandra E. Tardiff, Jack Arthur Stanford
Grizzly Bear Digging: Effects On Subalpine Meadow Plants In Relation To Mineral Nitrogen Availability, Sandra E. Tardiff, Jack Arthur Stanford
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Grizzly bears (Ursus arctos horribilis) affect plant distributions and mineral nitrogen availability when they forage by digging for the bulbs of glacier lilies (Erythronium grandiflorum) growing in subalpine meadows of Glacier National Park, Montana, United States. Our working hypothesis is that grizzly bears structure plant communities and influence nitrogen availability when they selectively dig for preferred plants. In this paper, we report on differences found in recently disturbed digs (<5 yr old) when compared to adjacent, undisturbed meadow.
We used ion exchange resin bags to determine the availability of mineral nitrogen in grizzly bear digs compared to undisturbed meadow. Soil in digs contained significantly …

Effective Recovery Of Bacterial Dna And Percent-Guanine-Plus-Cytosine-Based Analysis Of Community Structure In The Gastrointestinal Tract Of Broiler Chickens, Juha H. A. Apajalahti, Laura K. Särkilahti, Brita R. E. Mäki, J. Pekka Heikkinen, Päivi H. Nurminen, William E. Holben
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
A DNA-based, direct method for initial characterization of the total bacterial community in ileum and cecum of the chicken gastrointestinal (GI) tract was developed. The efficiencies of bacterial extraction and lysis were >95 and >99%, respectively, and therefore the DNA recovered should accurately reflect the bacterial communities of the ileal and cecal digesta. Total bacterial DNA samples were fractionated according to their percent G+C content. The profiles reflecting the composition of the bacterial community were reproducible within each compartment, but different between the compartments of the GI tract. This approach is independent of the culturability of the bacteria in the …

Myths, Mines, And Ground Clearance, Andy Smith
Myths, Mines, And Ground Clearance, Andy Smith
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
The following article deals with some common misconceptions about deminers, demining, and demining equipment. It is not an academic paper, but it is rather a discussion prompt. Some of the points are old enough to appear bearded to the field men--sorry about that--but newcomers still need to hear them. A few are contentious. To some extent, I am playing devil's advocate although all of the points raised in this article have arisen during my field work. I believe that they deserve an airing, and I would be interested to hear any well-reasoned, contrary opinions, or any words of support.

Strengthening Humanitarian Demining And Related Activities Through The Emphasis On Comparative Advantages, Joe Lokey
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
One of the foundations of contemporary economic systems is that expertise can create value. Based on this notion, it follows that economic efficiency results if every person does what he or she does best. Preferences, competencies, and resource capacity in the world of economics and trade drive these choices. In humanitarian pursuits, the trade aspects are less clear, and the financial aspects are less relevant, but the efficiencies gained from applying limited resources to a global crisis are still clear and relevant.

Using Narrative Picture Books To Build Awareness Of Expository Text Structure, Mary C. Mcmackin
Using Narrative Picture Books To Build Awareness Of Expository Text Structure, Mary C. Mcmackin
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
For many students, reading in the content areas presents quite a challenge. The transition from an emphasis on narrative texts in the lower grades to expository texts in the upper grades is not always easy. This article describes a system I use for introducing expository text structure through the use of narrative picture books. My goal is to develop an understanding of expository text structure with simple texts so that students will be able to transfer these understandings to more cognitively dense content area materials.

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
Three professors of literacy education reflected upon their varied field experiences with preservice teachers enrolled in their reading/language arts methods courses. After describing each field experience and discussing its impact on classroom teachers, elementary students, college students, and college professors, authors offer some general conclusions regarding literacy field experience.
