Perspectives On Norm-Referenced And Criterion-Referenced Grading In Introductory Speech Performance Courses, Ralph R. Behnke, Chris R. Sawyer Jan 1998

Perspectives On Norm-Referenced And Criterion-Referenced Grading In Introductory Speech Performance Courses, Ralph R. Behnke, Chris R. Sawyer

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article explores the integration and amalgamation of norm-referenced and criterion-referenced perspectives in a manner that is particularly appropriate for use in basic or introductory speech communication performance courses. Possibly the greatest virtue of using criterion-referenced grading of speeches in a basic speech performance course is the generation of positive affect toward performance. Because students identify with their speeches, they are much more demoralized by negative feedback about their work on these assignments than for others. By setting appropriate minimal performance criteria that most beginning students can achieve, morale remains high, there is an atmosphere of success, and, in fact, …

A National Survey Of Core Course Requirements, Department Names, And Undergraduate Program Titles In Communication, Corwin P. King

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article presents a survey which assessed the typical number of core courses college departments have, the most commonly used ones, and, in a general way, their contents. The article also provides data on department names and undergraduate program areas for a picture of the communication discipline in the 1990s. First, with regard to core course requirements, the following observations are noted: Though a majority of departments now have some type of core course requirement, a strong minority don't. Departments that have a core typically have a small one. There is a good deal of variation in cores, but one …

Factors That Influence The Funding Of College And University Media Outlets: Radio As A Blueprint, Samuel J. Sauls

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article presents a study examining the funding aspects of college and university radio stations. The article focuses on the investigation of the variables of station management positions, station types, station power and perceptions of station purposes among radio station directors as possible significant predictors of selected factors which influence the funding of college and university noncommercial radio stations. The traditional function of most campus radio stations has been to serve as a training ground for students who plan to enter professional broadcasting. The present study's findings reinforced this contention by distinguishing the view of the radio station as a …

  1. How do my perceptions as a writing instructor in a beginning community college composition course compare with my students' perceptions?
  2. How do my students and I understand real and perceived consequences that arise from various views about writing?
  3. How could my students and I mediate or resolve various views about …

Student Self-Assessment, Portfolios, And The Context Of The Classroom, Colleen Goodenbour Jan 1998

Student Self-Assessment, Portfolios, And The Context Of The Classroom, Colleen Goodenbour

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that seemed to influence student self-assessment in a language arts classroom where portfolios are used as a vehicle to align teaching, learning, and assessment. This was a qualitative study using naturalistic inquiry as a means to identify and explicate those factors. Data were gathered on individual students and the classroom by observation, which took the form of anecdotal records, surveys, portfolio work samples, conferences, and a personal reflective journal. This data provided information for three student portrayals and a composite language arts morning portrayal. The analysis of the portrayals and …

Inversion Of Plasmaspheric Euv Remote Sensing Data From The Stp 72-1 Satellite, R.R. Meier, A.C. Nicholas, J.M. Picone, D.J. Melendez-Alvira, G. Ganguli, Mark Anthony Reynolds, E.C. Roelof

Publications

Observations of the extreme ultraviolet emission of helium ions at 30.4 nm can be used to study the global shape of the plasmasphere and its dynamical response to geomagnetic forcing. In order to retrieve number densities of plasmaspheric He+ from such observations, we have developed a new inversion technique based on discrete inverse theory, which uses the optical data to optimize a parameterized model of the He+ distribution. We apply this inversion technique to several orbits of data obtained from the Naval Research Laboratory extreme ultraviolet photometric experiment launched on the STP 72-1 satellite in October 1972. The inversion is …

In this study, the holding ability of three different types of screws to particle board, Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), werzalit and beech wood which are widely used for furniture production, were investigated. The holding direction of the screws to all materials surface were both parallel and perpendicular. The experimental results showed that on the perpendicular direction, beech wood materials showed the best screw holding strength and it was followed by werzalut, MDF and particle board respectively. When the screw holding strength is parallel to the surface, highest screw holding strength was also seen at beech wood materials and it was …

Effect Of Irrigation Water On Corn Grain Yield In Ankara Conditions, Y. Ersoy Yildirim, Süleyman Kodal

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This research was conducted in Ankara conditions in order to determine corn yield response to water. When 50% of available water content in root zone is consumed in the control treatment, irrigation water was applied to the other treatments with 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 125%, 150%, 175% and 200% of those applied into check plots. As a result, applications of ex-cessive water was not increased grain yields at the important level. Yield response factor (k y ) for total growing period were found as 0.96 respectively.
