The Imperative That African-American Authors Define The Nature Of African-American Heroes In Literature: Or Uncle Tom To Jedediah West, Harry Jackson Jr. Jan 1998

The Imperative That African-American Authors Define The Nature Of African-American Heroes In Literature: Or Uncle Tom To Jedediah West, Harry Jackson Jr.

Theses

This document will demonstrate the need for African-American authors to define the essential and fundamental characteristics, disposition and purpose of the literary heroes of African Americans by way of an analysis of the novel, Cowboy, the Saga of Jedediah West, which I wrote between 1995 and 1998. The creation of a distinct literary heroic tradition for African Americans is necessary, I contend, because the culture virtually has been deprived and devoid of literary, imaginary heroes. Because people of every culture require heroes for healthy evolution, African Americans have weighted their heroic tradition with living heroes exclusively who are accepted …

Does The Constitution Require That We Kill The Competitive Goose? Pricing Local Phone Services To Rivals, William J. Baumol, Thomas W. Merrill

Faculty Scholarship

This Article concludes a series by these authors and Professors J. Gregory Sidak and Daniel F. Spulber, published last year in this journal. Here, Professors Baumol and Merrill address the issues surrounding the pricing of local phone services to long distance rivals, clarifying their points of agreement and disagreement with Sidak and Spulber. In their previous articles, Sidak and Spulber argued that the movement toward competition in local telephone service should be accompanied by substantial compensation to existing local telephone carriers, a view that Baumol and Merrill do not share. Rather, they note three points of disagreement between Sidak and …

The Effects Of Self-Esteem On Reading And Math Achievement In Third And Fifth Grade Students, Carol Ann Beatty Jan 1998

The Effects Of Self-Esteem On Reading And Math Achievement In Third And Fifth Grade Students, Carol Ann Beatty

Theses

This study examined whether self-esteem had a significant effect on reading and math achievement. Data were collected from 90 third and fifth grade students in a Midwestern, suburban elementary school. Results of a self-esteem test (Piers-Harris Children's Self-concept Scale) were correlated to standardized reading and math test scores (Missouri Mastery and Achievement Test, MMA T). The results indicated a direct correlation. The variation in the level of self-esteem scores suggests a parallel relationship with reading and math achievement scores. The direct correlation demonstrates if one score (self-esteem) is high, then the other score (reading or math) will more than likely …

Deaccessioning And The Colt Museum Collection, Carl A. Robin

The valuation of tangible personal property donated to reduce federal tax liability is an example of one function of the professional appraiser. An equally important task related to charitable contributions involves the appraisal of donated property after it becomes surplus to the needs of the recipient institution.

This study examines controversial exchanges from the Colt Museum Collection at the Connecticut State Library in Hartford between 1977 and 1984, placing them within a broader context to trace the evolution of uniform standards in the museum profession. The central idea recognizes the need for procedural safeguards to guide deaccessioning decisions.

Precipitous decisions …

The Role Of Good Nutrition. Good Physicians And The Advantages Of Alternative Medicine: An Educational Program For Senior Adults, Violet Connoyer

This study examines previous and forthcoming knowledge of ancient medicinal remedies and solutions which provide and enable]e the acquisition of better and safer health care. Because of political reasons which appear to be dominant over all others, this inherent knowledge continues to seemingly remain obscure within the medical world and within our society. The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And Academic Motivation Among Male Secondary Education Students, John Luddy Burke Iii

These students completed a test consisting of Russell Ivan's (1969) Academic Motivation Scale and Morris Rosenberg's (1965) Self-Esteem Scale. A Pearson-Product Moment correlation analysis was performed to determine the correlation between the two scales. The results suggest that self-esteem is not correlated with academic motivation among adolescent males.

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

How is it that Katherine of Aragon, a woman seemingly destined for a major impact on world events, has been relegated to the role of scorned wife and stubborn obstacle to historical progress? Beliefs about women’s roles limited Katherine while she was alive and influenced historical interpretations about her after her death. Katherine’s own interpretation of her role as a wife and mother evolved out of her perceptions of the opinions of others. The role that others had created for her was rigidly interpreted and internalized by Katherine. By not allowing herself to be used as a pawn by either …

Behavioral audiometric thresholds were obtained at 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000, 8000, 10000, 12500, 16000, 18000, 19000, and 20,000 Hz with standard air conduction audiometry and ultra-high frequency air conduction audiometry. DPOAE strength was measured at approximately 1000, 1100, 1500, 2000, 2500, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000, 8000, 12000, 16000, and 20000 Hz using a standard …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Hibernation pattern and changes in the body weight of juvenile and adult dormice, Glis glis orientalis, kept in uncontrolled conditions were investigated. It was determined that G.g.orientalis entered hibernation on October 28 when its body weight was 180 g and the ambient temperature was below 18 ºC, which seems to be the critical temperature for entering hibernation. Although body weight has an important role in entering hibernation at the beginning of the hibernation season, dormice hibernated as the hibernation season progressed regardless of their body weight. Adult dormice arose from hibernation during the period of May 13 to June 6. …
