Looking At Children Looking At Art : Teacher Response To Aesthetic Journals In Art, Julie A. Alden Jan 1998

Looking At Children Looking At Art : Teacher Response To Aesthetic Journals In Art, Julie A. Alden

Graduate Research Papers

Although recent trends in art education emphasize a discipline based approach to instruction, the elementary art experience often focuses on the process components of art production, overlooking other significant areas of study (Adams, 1992; Garoian, 1988; Hickman, 1994 ). One way in which educators can help make art experiences more meaningful to students is to use response journals for viewing artwork. Educators have established the use of response journals as a worthy practice by providing students with opportunities to develop greater understanding of content material and by providing teachers with valuable insight into students thinking through shared dialogue (Hall, Crawford …

Designing And Implementing Successful Staff Development, Peggy A. Sheetz Jan 1998

Designing And Implementing Successful Staff Development, Peggy A. Sheetz

Graduate Research Papers

What staff development factors are vital to ensure successful staff training for the integration of technology into the curriculum? What variability factors must be taken into account when planning and implementing staff development?

In theory, staff development should not take very long, and educators should be able to ascertain the meaning and directions that are given related to technology quite easily. However, the staff development that is thought out and executed well is the staff development opportunity that is effective. Effective staff development requires five factors: time, access, collaboration, training and implementation. Without these factors being considered, success will be …

Androgogy And K-12 Technology Staff Development : Towards Effective Practice, Craig Barnum

Graduate Research Papers

Many K-12 technology staff development programs are based upon pedagogical models. Adult learners require a different set of design and facilitation skills referred to as andragogy. The primary goal of adult education in any arena is to produce independent life long learners. This is particularly valuable in the ever changing realm of technology. To engage this task Knowles and Brookfield each identify six guiding principles that construct a framework for designers and facilitators of adult education programs to follow. The process of meaningfully integrating technology into the schools requires substantial change to current instructional methods. K-12 technology staff development designers …

Nurturing Reading Comprehension Of Attention Deficit Students By Improving Their Inferential Skills, Paula Decker

Graduate Research Papers

Inference-making is a necessary component of reading comprehension. Many attention deficit students have shown some degree of reading comprehension deficiencies. When teachers are aware of the characteristics and limitations of students with an attention deficiency, they can …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Randall W. Strabala Jan 1998

A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Randall W. Strabala

Graduate Research Papers

Why is it that some people give up the relative security and comfort of working with children in the classroom to join the principalship? Why do these same people choose to leave an area where they are the perceived expert in their field for an area where one's decisions are constantly questioned and criticized by those he or she works for and with? These are difficult questions to answer and in a rational sense, there are not a lot of logical responses for why some individuals decide to devote the effort necessary to understand and achieve the position of the …

A Test Of Additional Effort Expenditure In The "Walk Year" For Major League Baseball Players, Benjamin D. Grad Jan 1998

A Test Of Additional Effort Expenditure In The "Walk Year" For Major League Baseball Players, Benjamin D. Grad

University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics

Whether they "overperform" or underperform, it is clear that there is incentive for players to do well in their walk year. This same incentive is not present for players either already tied up in long-term contracts or those without enough major league service time to qualify for free-agent status. This paper seeks to test whether the assertion that players perform better and expend more effort in their "walk year" is empirically observable.

Winning The Marathon: A Reconsideration Of The Development Effects Of Neo-Classical Trade Practices, Peter Weylie, Jean-Pierre Guevremont

University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics

This paper focuses on the trading policies of developed nations, specifically import quotas, and their positive and negative effects on developing countries. We hope to show that the case is not as polar as was once believed and instead focus on how the current literature suggests that the real effects of free-trade are shrouded in nuance and circumstance. Our starting point will be an analysis of the fashionable neo-liberal trade theory and its impact on development, making special reference to the Multi-Fibre Agreement (MFA). We will then turn our attention to the shortcomings of the neo-liberal approach, and provide a …

Conference papers

Strategic managers and IS professionals who are responsible for specifying, acquiring and producing quality software products are not supported by the endless flow of new international standards, legislation and user requirements. In order to clarify the current situation for everybody concerned with software quality, and especially those interested in usability, there is a need for a new review and evaluation of the various strands that contribute to software quality. By way of review this paper recalls the original software quality factors which were defined twenty years ago by McCall et al. and presents a methodical analysis and synthesis of three …

1998 And Beyond In New Caledonia: At Freedom's Gate?, Alan Berman

Washington International Law Journal

This article examines the upcoming 1998 referendum on self-determination in New Caledonia through the larger contextual lens of French historical involvement in the territory. The article addresses the impact French colonization has had on Kanak culture, legal institutions, social organization and economic livelihood. The historical policies of the French government are canvassed by exploring the manner in which France manipulated the legal process and political institutions it created in New Caledonia to entrench colonial control. The article concludes that the process of decolonization is unlikely to be completed in the near future. Finally, the article discusses the potential consequences for …

Transparency In The European Union, Laurens Jan Brinkhorst Jan 1998

Transparency In The European Union, Laurens Jan Brinkhorst

Fordham International Law Journal

The reason why I chose the issue of transparency is that I have a personal stake in the matter. Now someone has said that the European Union is really a conspiracy of the initiators. At the time the European Community (or “Community”) was created, we had a totally different political culture, both in the Member States, but certainly in the international field. The European Community concentrated on highly technical matters--economic matters, trade matters, matters that were relevant to the farmers, and the public at large was really not very interested. In general, the concept of democracy was a somewhat different …

Ec Competition System -- Proposals For Reform, Alexander Schaub

Fordham International Law Journal

At last year's Fordham Corporate Law Institute, under the heading "The Millennium Approaches," I spoke about the challenges that European Community ("EC" or "Community") competition law is facing or will face in the near future. I came to the conclusion that the time has come for a re-examination and modernization of our rules, in particular the implementing and procedural legislation. I reached this conclusion based upon three reasons.

The Protection Of Human Rights In The New Polish Constitution, Ryszard Cholewinski

This Article examines the extent of human rights protection under the Constitution of the Republic of Poland of April 2, 1997 ("new Polish Constitution" or "Constitution"), adopted on April 2, 1997, by the Polish National Assembly and approved by the Polish people in a referendum on May 25, 1997. The Constitution, a lengthy document composed of 243 articles, came into force on October 17, 1997, and is one of the last constitutions to be adopted in Central and Eastern Europe since the start of the political and socio-economic transformations of the post-communist era. This Article emphasizes the importance of the …

The Good Friday Agreement: A Triumph Of Substance Over Style, Kate Fearon, Monica Mcwilliams Jan 1998

The Good Friday Agreement: A Triumph Of Substance Over Style, Kate Fearon, Monica Mcwilliams

Fordham International Law Journal

This Essay consists of five parts. Part I locates the Agreement in a series of constitutional attempts to resolve the "Irish question" from 1971 onwards, arguing that the Agreement is both similar to, yet fundamentally different from, other settlement propositions. Part II introduces the reader to the Northern Ireland Women's Coalition (or "NIWC"), saying something of its founding rationale and environment before considering its priorities for the political process in which it found itself immersed in May 1996. Part III further outlines the role that the NIWC assumed in that process, and its modus operandi, going on to describe the …
