Emotional Hijacking Versus Safe Behavior., Christopher Monteressi
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This research investigated the types of reasoning used by coal mine employees when exposed to potentially dangerous situations. Information was gathered through interviews of coal miners who related actual experiences in the coal mines. The information in the interviews and in the review of the literature was used to develop and implement an experiential program that promoted an individual's responsibility for their safety and the safety of co-workers. The experiential program addressed safe work behaviors from the perspectives of emotional and cognitive memories and the functions of the human brain. This program had three overall objectives of assisting miners to …

Immunotoxic Effects Of Pulmonary Exposure To Isobutyl Nitrite In The Murine Macrophage., Avijit Roy
Immunotoxic Effects Of Pulmonary Exposure To Isobutyl Nitrite In The Murine Macrophage., Avijit Roy
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Isobutyl nitrite (IBN) is a volatile compound that causes vasodilation and smooth muscle relaxation. A history of abuse of this compound by HIV positive homosexual men has been associated with an increased incidence of Kaposi's Sarcoma, a tumor whose growth is responsive to cytokines. Previous work with the murine pulmonary model has demonstrated that exposure to IBN can suppress cytotoxic T cell ability, reduce the production of nitric oxide by macrophages and impair their ability to kill P815 targets. The overall aim of this project was to further characterize the nature of the immune alteration in the murine macrophages. In …
The Hemp Controversy: Can Industrial Hemp Save Kentucky?, Susan David Demaine
The Hemp Controversy: Can Industrial Hemp Save Kentucky?, Susan David Demaine
Articles by Maurer Faculty
In the wake of litigation over the responsibility of tobacco companies for harm caused by cigarettes and in the face of increased public hostility toward smoking, Kentucky's tobacco farmers are apprehensive about the future. While not all growers depend entirely on tobacco for their income, the potential shrinking of the tobacco market will have serious ramifications throughout the state. Some farmers are turning to organic vegetable farming, or to com and soybeans as alternative crops, but the potential of industrial hemp as an option remains uncertain. Touted by many as the answer to the tobacco farmer's quandary, industrial hemp remains …

Using The Sgid Method For A Variety Of Purposes, Beverly Black
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
The Small Group Instructional Diagnosis (SGID) process (Redmond & Clark, 1982) has been used for consultation purposes at the Center for Research on Learning and Teaching at the University of Michigan since 1990. Since then it has become a multi-purpose tool with far-reaching results. This article describes a variety of ways we have used this process: to provide feedback to individual faculty and teaching assistants on their teaching, to inform coordinators of large multi-sectioned courses on how the course is working as a whole, to inform coordinators of TA training on the effectiveness of their programs, to advocate for better …
Review Of Indian Territory And The United States, 1866- 1906: Courts, Government, And The Movement For Oklahoma Statehood By Jeffrey Burton, Raymond Wilson
Review Of Indian Territory And The United States, 1866- 1906: Courts, Government, And The Movement For Oklahoma Statehood By Jeffrey Burton, Raymond Wilson
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Attempts by state governments and the federal government to undermine Indian tribal sovereignty remain one of the major challenges Indian tribes face today. One of the best known attacks against Indian political and economic authority was the abolition of the tribal institutions of the Five Tribes in Indian Territory, which resulted in Oklahoma statehood.
Indian Territory and the United States, 1866- 1906, the first volume in the University of Oklahoma Press's Legal History of North America Series, is a detailed and fresh examination of the destruction of the Five Tribes' governments in Indian Territory resulting from federal judicial reforms …

Infrared Ellpsometer/ Polarmeter System, Method Of Calibration, And Use Thereof, Daniel W. Thompson, Blaine D. Johs
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
A sample system investigation system, such as an ellipsometer or polarimeter system, for use in investigating sample systems with electromagnetic wavelengths in the infrared range, and a calibration method for compensating nonidealities in multi-dimensional system rotated and non-rotated component representing matricies, are disclosed. An essentially achromatic compensator of dual-rhomb construction, which introduces a (3*LAMBDA/4) phase shift, but essentially no deviation in the direction of propagation of a polarized beam of electromagnetic wavelengths caused to pass there through, even when said compensator is caused to continuously rotate, is also disclosed.
A New Radiosonde System For Profiling The Lower Troposphere, Brian R Corner, Robert D. Palmer
A New Radiosonde System For Profiling The Lower Troposphere, Brian R Corner, Robert D. Palmer
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
A new, inexpensive radiosonde transmitter and receiver system has been developed for measuring wind field inhomogeneities in the planetary boundary layer using multiple simultaneously launched balloons. The radio- sondes use a narrowband-frequency-modulated carrier signal to transmit atmospheric pressure and temperature information to a surface receiver. The pressure and temperature data transmitted by the radiosondes allow their height above the surface to be ascertained. In addition, the radiosondes can be tracked with a photographic camera system to provide the azimuth and elevation angles of the radiosondes during their ascent, so that their three-dimensional horizontal position can be determined. By tracking the …
Optical Determination Of Shallow Carrier Profiles Using Fourier Transform Infrared Ellipsometry, Thomas E. Tiwald, John A. Woollam, John A. Woollam
Optical Determination Of Shallow Carrier Profiles Using Fourier Transform Infrared Ellipsometry, Thomas E. Tiwald, John A. Woollam, John A. Woollam
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications
Dopant profiles were determined by ex situ Fourier transform infrared variable-angle spectroscopic ellipsometry. The technique exploits carrier absorption in the mid-infrared spectral range and combines the sensitivity of ellipsometry with a simple Drude free carrier absorption model to determine the carrier profile. The noncontact, nondestructive nature of the measurement suggests both ex situ and in situ monitoring and control applications. In this study, the carrier profiles were modeled as graded multilayers that can be constrained to a given functional form (Gaussian, erfc, etc.) when desired. Boron and arsenic implanted silicon wafers that were rapid thermal anneal and furnace annealed were …

Production Of Ethers Of Gycerol From Crude Glycerol: The By-Product Of Biodiesel Production, Hossein Noureddini, W. R. Dailey, B. A. Hunt
Papers in Biomaterials
Methyl esters of fatty acids (also known as biodiesel), made from the transesterification of vegetable oils and animal fats with methanol, have shown a lot of promise as alternative diesel fuels. Glycerol is the inevitable by-product of the transesterification process. While there are existing markets for glycerol, a significant increase in availability of glycerol, resulting from the expanded use of vegetable oils and animal fats, would destabilize the glycerol market. Direct addition of glycerol to the fuel is not possible, however, derivatives of glycerol such as ethers have potential for use as additives with biodiesel, diesel or biodiesel-diesel blends. In …

Photoinduced Coupling Of Acetylenes And Quinone In The Solid State As Preorganized Donor−Acceptor Pairs, E. Bosch, S. M. Hubig, Sergey V. Lindeman, Jay K. Kochi
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
Crystalline electron donor−acceptor (EDA) complexes of various diarylacetylenes (DA) and dichlorobenzoquinone (DB) are isolated and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Deliberate excitation of either the DB acceptor at λDB = 355 nm or the 1:2 [DA, 2DB] complex at λCT = 532 nm in the solid state leads to [2 + 2] cycloaddition and identical (isomeric) mixtures of the quinone methide products. Time-resolved (ps) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy identifies the ion-radical pair [DA•+, DB•-] as the reactive intermediate derived by photoinduced electron transfer in both photochemical …
Conflicts Of Interest In Scientific Expert Testimony, Mark R. Patterson
Conflicts Of Interest In Scientific Expert Testimony, Mark R. Patterson
Faculty Scholarship
Conflicts of interest have significant implications for the reliability of scientific expert testimony. However, the courts' treatment of conflicts is not always in accord either with the treatment of conflicts in scientific practice or with the particular problems that scientists' conflicts present in court. In response, this Article proposes two basic changes in the treatment of scientific expert testimony. First, courts should strive to separate issues of bias from issues of scientific validity-the two sets of issues are now conflated at times. Second, courts should pay more attention to biases of scientists who perform the research underlying expert testimony, whereas …
Sediment Ingestion Of Two Sympatric Shorebird Species, Clifford A. Hui, W. Nelson Beyer
Sediment Ingestion Of Two Sympatric Shorebird Species, Clifford A. Hui, W. Nelson Beyer
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Black-bellied plovers (Pluvialis squatarola) have short bills and primarily peck while foraging whereas Willets (Catoptrophorus semipalmatus) have long bills and primarily probe with bills open in sediments. Intestinal digesta were collected from these species at sympatric overwintering sites in southern California near San Diego to relate sediment ingestion to bill length and feeding behavior. Plover digesta contained an estimated 29% sediment, and Willet digesta an estimated 3% sediment. Techniques based on acid insoluble ash and on the elemental markers of Al, Fe, and Ti in digesta provided similar results. High Ca concentrations in Willet digesta along …

Short Changing Short-Term Risk: A Study Of Superfund Remedy Selection, John S. Applegate, Steven M. Wesloh
Articles by Maurer Faculty
Unlike most environmental statutes, CERCLA requires a lengthy period of labor-intensive activity to achieve its clean-up goals. This aspect of the Superfund program does not receive sufficient attention in policy and legal analyses of CERCLA, nor during site-specific remedy selection decision-making. The risks of the remediation period-to workers, to site neighbors, and to the natural environment-are substantial, as this Article illustrates. However, the confusing and sometimes dismissive treatment of remediation risk in the EPA 's detailed guidance for Superfund decision-makers invites the neglect of the short-term effectiveness criterion in the remedy selection process. A study of remedy selection documents in …

Protecting Soldiers From Friendly Fire: The Consent Requirement For Using Investigational Drugs And Vaccines In Combat, George J. Annas
Protecting Soldiers From Friendly Fire: The Consent Requirement For Using Investigational Drugs And Vaccines In Combat, George J. Annas
Faculty Scholarship
In 1990, following Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, the Department of Defense (DOD) sought a waiver of the informed consent requirements of existing human experimentation regulations from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). With this waiver, DOD could authorize military use of investigational drugs and vaccines on soldiers involved in the Gulf War without their informed consent. The basis of the waiver request was military expediency. In DOD's words: "In all peace time applications, we believe strongly in informed consent and ethical foundations... but military combat is different." DOD's rationale was that informed consent under combat conditions was "not feasible" because …
