1080 Operational Procedures Manual - Second Edition, Agriculture Western Australia Jan 1998

1080 Operational Procedures Manual - Second Edition, Agriculture Western Australia

Biosecurity published reports

Sodium fluoroacetate (1080) is an extremely toxic substance which can be a danger to humans if handled incorrectly. At the same time 1080 is the most effective and efficient poison for the control of Western Australia's main vertebrate pest species including rabbits, wild dogs and foxes. One of the main reasons for its usefulness in Western Australia is that many native animals have a high tolerance to it and so may not be affected by baiting.

Industry Resource Protection Program (IRPP) This program, part of Agriculture Western Australia, supports feral animal control carried out by its staff and community groups. …

Sr‐ And Ni‐Doped Lacoo3 And Lafeo3 Perovskites: New Cathode Materials For Solid‐Oxide Fuel Cells, Kevin Huang, Hee Y. Lee, John B. Goodenough

Faculty Publications

An improved cathode material for a solid‐oxide fuel cell would be a mixed electronic and oxide‐ion conductor with a good catalytic activity for oxygen reduction at an operating temperature T op ≥ 700°C and a thermal expansion matched to that of the electrolyte and interconnect. We report on the properties of Sr‐ and Ni‐doped LaCoO3 and LaFeO3 perovskites that meet these criteria. Single‐phase regions were determined by X‐ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis measurements were used to obtain the temperatures above which oxygen loss, and hence oxide‐ion conductivity, occurs. The conductivity and Seebeck measurements indicate the coexistence of both …

Assessing Selected Shoulder Muscle Activity During Performance Of Exercise On The Cuff Link Exercise Unit, Kathleen Johnstone, Kathleen Wagner

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to evaluate muscle activity of pectoralis major, serratus anterior, teres major, and latissimus dorsi during an exercise performed on the Cufif Link utilizing normal subjects. Forty-four subjects performed a rotation exercise in a clockwise direction at a speed of 58 beats per minute. Three trials were completed using the push-up handles and the large-diameter hemisphere. Surface electromyography recorded the activity of the four muscles. Recorded EMG values were normalized as a percentage of the maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVTC). A two-way ANOVA was used to compare mean normalized muscle activity for each muscle and …

An Analysis Of Research Article Productivity By Telecommunication Scholars Over The Past Decade, David Atkin, Leo W. Jeffres Jan 1998

An Analysis Of Research Article Productivity By Telecommunication Scholars Over The Past Decade, David Atkin, Leo W. Jeffres

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

The article presents a study which assesses scholarly productivity in telecommunication-oriented journals from 1985-1995. Telecommunication can be defined as mediated communication across a distance. Sixteen journals were selected for this analysis. Most were listed among publications with the highest number of telecommunication authorship credits, according to Vincent's study. Some of the differences in journal contributions may be a function of publication frequency and size. For instance, Journal of Media Economics (3.6 percent of articles) offered two issues/year through 1990 before expanding to four issues in 1993. Journalism Quarterly publishes more articles per issue than any of the other criterion journals. …

Our Administrative System Of Criminal Justice, Gerard E. Lynch Jan 1998

Our Administrative System Of Criminal Justice, Gerard E. Lynch

Faculty Scholarship

Bill Tendy was already a legend among federal prosecutors when I first served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York in the early 1980s. To us youngsters, Bill even then seemed a survivor from another era, when prosecutors really did resemble the tough-talking Hollywood DAs played by actors like Brian Donleavy – while we felt more like insecure young lawyers who should be played by Michael J. Fox or Calista Flockhart.

Partly, of course, this was just a function of age and experience; hard as it was to imagine, there must have been a …

Adaptive Prefetching For Device-Independent File I/O, Dan Revel, Dylan Mcnamee, David Steere, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Device independent I/O has been a holy grail to operating system designers since the early days of UNIX. Unfortunately, existing operating systems fall short of this goal for multimedia applications. Techniques such as caching and sequential read-ahead can help mask I/O latency in some cases, but in others they increase latency and add substantial jitter. Multimedia applications, such as video players, are sensitive to vagaries in performance since I/O latency and jitter affect the quality of presentation. Our solution uses adaptive prefetching to reduce both latency and jitter. Applications submit file access plans to the prefetcher, which then generates I/O …

Commercial Codification As Negotiation, David Frisch Jan 1998

Commercial Codification As Negotiation, David Frisch

Law Faculty Publications

Part I of this Article endeavors to put the sales law in perspective by emphasizing its role in the broader system of commercial law. Then, in Part II we focus on a particular example (the buyer's right to recover goods upon the seller's insolvency) to support our general observation that the revision reflects a fatal insensitivity to the need for article 2 to fit with other bodies of commercial codification. Part III demonstrates the revi~ion's failure to come to terms with the role of context and makes the argument that the drafters' shortsightedness is evidenced by the manner in which …

Wielding The Double-Edge Sword: Charles Hamilton Houston And Judicial Activism In The Age Of Legal Realism, Roger Fairfax

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

A new progressive movement in the law profoundly affected the American judicial climate of the 1930s and 1940s. The jurisprudence of American Legal Realism, which sprang from the progressive American sociological jurisprudence, boasted the adherence of some of America's most influential legal minds. Legal Realism, which complemented the New Deal reform legislation emerging in the 1930s, advocated judicial deference to legislative and administrative channels on matters of social and economic policy. Judicial activism, which had been used as a tool for the protection of economic rights since the late nineteenth century, was seen as inimical to progressive social reform and, …

Acceleration Simulation Of A Vehicle With A Continuously Variable Power Split Transmission., Zhijian Lu Jan 1998

Acceleration Simulation Of A Vehicle With A Continuously Variable Power Split Transmission., Zhijian Lu

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

A continuously variable transmission system has often been considered for automobiles. It offers the potential to allow the engine to operate at peak efficiency without disturbing the driver with discrete shifts. The application of CVTs in automobiles has been attempted for many years. This concept has been rapidly developed in the last twenty years. The shaft-to-shaft belt CVT is now the most commonly used CVT product in the automobiles. The main drawback of this kind of CVT is limited torque capacity and the modest power efficiency. This prevents the belt CVT from being used in the vehicles with large displacement …

Equipment Specification, Process Control And Plant Simulation For A Lignin-Fueled Fluidized Bed Combuster Plant., Shane Brannon Lamp

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Many states are confronted with the issue of how to dispose of the wood waste produced by timber and wood products companies. Converting the wood waste to ethanol is one way of efficiently disposing of the waste. However, the feasibility of the conversion facility is still being pursued. Studies are still being performed to investigate the feasibility of such a facility. The wood waste-to-ethanol conversion process produces a by-product known as lignin sludge. A recent study has concluded that the lignin sludge should be used as fuel to generate steam for the conversion process. The most efficient way to combust …

Development Of A Systems Approach To Planning, Design And Operations Of Intermodal Passenger Transfer Facilities To Increase The Mobility And Safety Of Older Travelers., Mohammad Anwarul Karim

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

America, as a society, is aging. Currently, 13% of the population is 65 years of age or older. This percentage is expected to rise to 21% by 2030. Since older travelers frequently suffer from one or more age-related physical and/or information handling decrements, they often have problems using intermodal passenger transfer facilities. The overall goal of this study was to develop a framework which can provide an approach to identify older traveler issues associated with intermodal passenger transfer facilities and serve to guide planning and engineering improvements to intermodal passenger transfer facilities to increase the safety and mobility of older …

From a review of literature by four score teachers, administrators, and curriculum theorists, Hayes has elicited claims of 65 specific results in eight different categories. The quoted authors perceived that the classroom study of genealogy and family history: (1) Affects in positive ways how students feel about non-family history; (2) Promotes the learning of several disciplines related to history; (3) Reveals the interconnectedness of human society, and encourages multiracial and multicultural understanding; (4) Improves scholastic skills; (5) Builds students' sense of …

Atomic Hydrogen Cleaning Of Inp(100) For Preparation Of A Negative Electron Affinity Photocathode, K. A. Elamrawi, M. A. Hafez, H. E. Elsayed-Ali Jan 1998

Atomic Hydrogen Cleaning Of Inp(100) For Preparation Of A Negative Electron Affinity Photocathode, K. A. Elamrawi, M. A. Hafez, H. E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Atomic hydrogen cleaning is used to clean InP(100) negative electron affinity photocathodes. Reflection high-energy electron diffraction patterns of reconstructed, phosphorus-stabilized, InP(100) surfaces are obtained after cleaning at ∼400 °C. These surfaces produce high quantum efficiency photocathodes (∼8.5%), in response to 632.8 nm light. Without atomic hydrogen cleaning, activation of InP to negative electron affinity requires heating to ∼530 °C. At this high temperature, phosphorus evaporates preferentially and a rough surface is obtained. These surfaces produce low quantum efficiency photocathodes (∼0.1%). The use of reflection high-energy electron diffraction to measure the thickness of the deposited cesium layer during activation by correlating …

Modeling Electromagnetic Disturbances In Closed-Loop Computer Controlled Flight Systems, W. Steven Gray, Oscar R. Gonzalez Jan 1998

Modeling Electromagnetic Disturbances In Closed-Loop Computer Controlled Flight Systems, W. Steven Gray, Oscar R. Gonzalez

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

High intensity electromagnetic radiation has been demonstrated to be a source of computer upsets in commercially available digital flight control systems. In this paper we introduce an electromagnetic disturbance model which can be used for stability analysis and augmentation of any such digitally implemented control law. The model is composed of a Markovian exosystem supplying radiation events to a discrete-time jump linear system which models how the radiation interferes with the nominal operation of the closed-loop system. We discuss how this model can be used to characterize stability and how it can be parametrized and validated in an experimental setting.
