Patterns Of Time, Place, And Culture: Land Use Zoning In Portland, Oregon, 1918-1924, Meg Merrick Jan 1998

Patterns Of Time, Place, And Culture: Land Use Zoning In Portland, Oregon, 1918-1924, Meg Merrick

Dissertations and Theses

Until recently, few have questioned the notion that the separation of uses in land use zoning is inherently correct. Many observers of the city are now suggesting that zoning, as it has been practiced in this country over the last 80 years, has created cities that are fractured and function poorly. Others propose that zoning should be reconsidered as a remedy for urban dysfunction. They suggest that the whole notion of zoning be rethought.

The purpose of this study is to uncover some of the underlying rationales and methodologies that set the model for zoning. This study examines the rationales …

"The Voyage Out": A Search For Interpersonal Relatedness And Self-Definition, Jennifer Starr Busto Jan 1998

"The Voyage Out": A Search For Interpersonal Relatedness And Self-Definition, Jennifer Starr Busto

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

In her first novel, The Voyage Out, Virginia Woolf captures the complexity of human relationships and the difficulty of establishing meaningful connections with people. Her main character, Rachel Vinrace, struggles with these issues as she embarks on a discovery of self. Rachel's journey begins with a disrupted childhood, moves through her battle to regain a sense of belonging, and ends with her eventual withdrawal from the human struggle, thereby recreating herself and transcending the limitations of society and relationships. Rachel's actions throughout the novel mirror an oscillation between the fundamental concerns of personality development. Her behavior reflects the typical ego …

"Con Respeto": Factors Related To The Academic Performance Of Mexican-American Fourth Graders In Selected Florida Elementary Schools, Mary Lindquist Mosley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The purpose of this study was to identify how various student, school, and staff predictors related to the academic performance of Mexican American fourth graders in selected schools as evidenced by their scores on the Florida Writes Assessment as well as on norm referenced achievement tests in reading comprehension and math applications. Three null hypotheses were tested to show if there was a correlation between predictors and these criterion variables: writing skills, reading comprehension, and math applications. A sample of 64 students from two Florida districts and twelve elementary schools was obtained. Data were collected from archival sources within each …

Alice Walker: Redefining The Hero, Nicole. Campbell Jan 1998

Alice Walker: Redefining The Hero, Nicole. Campbell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

In Meridian, The Temple of My Familiar, and Possessing the Secret of Joy, Alice Walker places women in the traditionally male role of hero. As an artist, her goal is to provide stories with role models who will help women transcend the gender stereotyping inherent in patriarchal cultures and enable them to envision themselves as capable of completing the stages of the hero's journey. The novels are compared to the three stages of the hero's journey as it is defined by Joseph Campbell to demonstrate how the women successfully master the hero pattern. The simple act of replacing the mythical …

Analysis Of The Performance Of A Loop Radiator And A Spiral Applicator At Low Rf Frequencies, John M. Roman Jan 1998

Analysis Of The Performance Of A Loop Radiator And A Spiral Applicator At Low Rf Frequencies, John M. Roman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This thesis addresses the electromagnetic analyses of two structures. The first structure, a low frequency loop antenna recommended for use by national standards on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), is incorrectly specified to have the same voltage to magnetic field conversion ratio (antenna factor) when used with a 50 ohm receiver in lieu of a high impedance type ($>$600 ohm). Two independent measurement sets were performed to demonstrate the prevailing discrepancy, and a corrected antenna factor is presented for use with a 50 ohm receiver. The second structure, a partial spiral "pancake" applicator used to generate high EM fields in its …

Assessing Organizational Effectiveness: The Impact Of Drug Court Processes On Offender Behavior Change, Scott Robert Senjo Jan 1998

Assessing Organizational Effectiveness: The Impact Of Drug Court Processes On Offender Behavior Change, Scott Robert Senjo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The issue of drugs and crime maintains a high rank among the complexities which confront the American system of criminal justice. The "treatment drug court" represents an innovative response by policymakers to address drug use and its relationship to criminal activity. Treatment drug court is a court-monitored drug treatment program for people arrested for felony use or possession of illegal drugs. Many defendants select the drug court option rather than probation because most drug courts will dismiss the original felony charges upon successful completion of the court's drug treatment program. This dissertation is a focus on the unique "collaborative support" …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The electronic media have a close and evolving relationship with the courtrooms and the courtroom proceedings of the United States. The issues that surround media coverage of court cases and the increasing use of videotaped material, as evidence is the focus of this thesis. The electronic media's interest in legal matters has opened a debate over the principles a free press and a fair trial. This work researches the history of cameras in the courtroom and discusses how trials have become a viable and profitable form of entertainment. It will cite cases and studies that provide evidence as to the …

Atomic Spies: The Soviet Penetration Of The Manhattan Project's Los Alamos Laboratory, Christopher G. Cabrera Jan 1998

Atomic Spies: The Soviet Penetration Of The Manhattan Project's Los Alamos Laboratory, Christopher G. Cabrera

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The intelligence services of the Soviet Union capitalized on several factors that facilitated their successful penetration of Los Alamos Laboratory, allowing them access to the secrets of the atomic bomb. The freedoms enjoyed in a democratic society, the appeal of communism, and the special considerations of wartime presented an environment in the United States conducive for the development and operation of Soviet spy networks. While these conditions did present the Soviets with circumstances favorable for espionage work, the foremost reason for the Soviet Union's skillful theft of atomic secrets from Los Alamos Laboratory involved the fact that they had help …

Characterization And Distribution Of Parvalbumin From Selected Fish Species, Cliff Ian Ross Jan 1998

Characterization And Distribution Of Parvalbumin From Selected Fish Species, Cliff Ian Ross

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Parvalbumins are acidic calcium-binding proteins found in large quantities in the white muscle fibers of cold-blooded vertebrates. Fish display two to seven parvalbumin isotypes that are species specific and thus constitute a valuable tool in the study of phylogenetic relationships, and as a specific biomarker for fish identification. Parvalbumins were isolated from a selected sample of marine teleosts and elasmobranchs. Purified isotypes were characterized via HPLC (gel filtration, and ion exchange), and electrophoresis (IEF, and SDS-PAGE). An indirect immunoassay was developed for the parvalbumin isotypes using monoclonal antibodies directed against the highly conserved calcium-binding site. Parvalbumins from selected fish species …

Dynamics Of Attitudes: Individual Beliefs To Cultural Norms, Helen C. Harton Jan 1998

Dynamics Of Attitudes: Individual Beliefs To Cultural Norms, Helen C. Harton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Dynamic social impact theory (DSIT; Latane, 1996a; 1996b), a macro-level theory of social influence, predicts that discussion will lead to a self-organization of public opinion through decreasing minority sizes, increasing spatial similarity, and emerging correlations. The catastrophe theory of attitudes (CTA; Latane & Nowak, 1994), a micro-level theory, suggests that attitudes are a joint function of issue involvement and information favorability. This paper describes the predictions leading from these theories separately and as integrated and meta-analytically combines analyses of almost 500 students discussing social and political issues over a computer network with twenty previous studies testing aspects of CTA. The …

Comparison Of Academic Success Variables Of Black Male High School Graduates With Other Racial And Gender Populations In The Broward County School District, Florida, Melvin D. Gillespie Jan 1998

Comparison Of Academic Success Variables Of Black Male High School Graduates With Other Racial And Gender Populations In The Broward County School District, Florida, Melvin D. Gillespie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Black males in the United States and Florida are falling behind other groups in almost every measurement of academic success. Inadequate preparation in high school often discourages them from seeking postsecondary education, and reduces their chances of obtaining gainful employment. This study compared the variables which can predict academic success (number of college preparation courses, high school GPA, class rank, and standardized test scores) of black males with that of other racial populations and gender. The sample was limited to seniors who graduated in 1994 from the Broward County public schools and attempted the Florida college entry-level placement test. The …

Ecological Impact Of Arsenic, Chromium And Lead From Application Of Recovered Screened Material On Florida Soils, Dimitrios. Scarlatos Jan 1998

Ecological Impact Of Arsenic, Chromium And Lead From Application Of Recovered Screened Material On Florida Soils, Dimitrios. Scarlatos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Disposal of construction and demolition (C&D) debris is a major problem. During recycling operations, the debris is passed over screens, generating what is called Recovered Screened Material (RSM). Previous analyses of RSM indicated high arsenic (As) levels. Thus, RSM is disposed in landfills in spite of the fact that natural soils may contain As levels higher than the proposed concentrations for soil clean-up goals. RSM samples were collected and analyzed from seven C&D debris recycling facilities and from other sites. The average arsenic content found in RSM ranged between residential and industrial clean-up goals. Chromium and lead levels in RSM …

Effects Of Meditation On Global And Factor Scores On The Bsi: A Secondary Analysis, Rebecca Leigh Buti Jan 1998

Effects Of Meditation On Global And Factor Scores On The Bsi: A Secondary Analysis, Rebecca Leigh Buti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

This study was a secondary analysis or data collected by Freeman, E., Ruppenthal, B., and Flinders, R. entitled "Meditation on a Passage and Repetition of a Mantram to Enhance Self-Care of Persons with HIV Infection" (1992). Selected data were re-analyzed considering the Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory (Orem, 1995). Self-care consisted of daily repetition of an inspirational passage and mantra, which served as the interventions for the primary study. The primary researchers noted that Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) scores rose significantly after the intervention. Thus, secondary analysis focused on the relationships of the basic conditioning factors (BCF) to the global and …

Exercise In Futility: The Czech Republic's Attempts To Join The European Union, Deborah Lynn Campbell Jan 1998

Exercise In Futility: The Czech Republic's Attempts To Join The European Union, Deborah Lynn Campbell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

Czechoslovakia, and later the Czech Republic, has made its desire to join the European Union (EU) clear since the establishment of its constitution in 1990. Experts agree the country's success at creating a working democratic government and free market economy will make it eligible for EU membership by 2002. However, the European Union will not be capable of successfully expanding at that time. The EU must restructure its political and voting systems, as well as the Common Agricultural Policy, to allow for more participating members. While officials of the European Union agree these changes are necessary, very little has been …

Inclusive jet differential cross sections for the reaction e+p → e+ + jet + X with quasi-real photons have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. These cross sections are given for the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy interval 134 < W < 277 GeV and jet pseudorapidity in the range -1 < ηjet < 2 in the laboratory frame. The results are presented for three cone radii in the η - φ plane, R = 1.0, 0.7 and 0.5. Measurements of dσ/dηjet above various jet-transverse-energy thresholds up to 25 GeV and in three ranges of W are presented and compared to next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations. For jets defined with R = 1.0 differences between data and NLO calculations are seen at high ηjet and low EjetT. The measured cross sections for jets defined with R = 0.7 are well described by the calculations in the entire measured range ηjet and EjetT. The inclusive jet cross section for EjetT > 21 GeV is consistent with an approximately linear variation with the cone radius R in the range between 0.5 and 1.0, and with NLO calculations.

The Christian Jurisprudence Of Robert E. Rodes Jr., Thomas L. Shaffer

Journal Articles

When I had the chance to leave law practice and become a fulltime law teacher, I turned, in the time-honored fashion, for advice from my law teachers. The most memorable and persistent of these—the most cheerful, too, and therefore the most hopeful—was Robert E. Rodes, Jr., then a young (36), transplanted New Yorker, Harvard law graduate, and Boston lawyer. He had already come to flourish, in the Aristotelian sense, in the Midwest—in a Catholic university known more for its football players than for its lawyers.

Rodes told me he had come to teaching and to Notre Dame because he wanted …

Public Reason, Abortion, And Cloning, John M. Finnis Jan 1998

Public Reason, Abortion, And Cloning, John M. Finnis

Journal Articles

Every society, liberal or illiberal, takes a public stand on the question whether abortion is or is not a form of criminal activity. If that question were left to private judgment, people who judge it homicide would be entitled to use force to prevent their fellow citizens engaging in it.

The need for the law and public policy to take a stand has become more and more obvious for two reasons. The first has to do with the standard purpose of abortion, as that term is commonly used: to end the life of a fetus/unborn child. As Jeffrey Reiman argues …

Buying Time For Survivors Of Domestic Violence: A Proposal For Implementing An Exception To Welfare Time Limits, Jennifer Mason Mcaward Jan 1998

Buying Time For Survivors Of Domestic Violence: A Proposal For Implementing An Exception To Welfare Time Limits, Jennifer Mason Mcaward

Journal Articles

With the passage of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act of 1996 (Personal Responsibility Act), states have unprecedented discretion in fashioning their social welfare programs.

This Note examines the Personal Responsibility Act, focusing specifically on the statutory language and history of the sixty-month time limit on receipt of benefits and the two optional exceptions states may enact. This examination reveals that the Act contemplates that states have both the power and the support of Congress and the Department of Health and Human Services to implement exceptions for the benefit of survivors of domestic violence.

Given that states may …

Catholic Judges In Capital Cases, Amy Coney Barrett, John H. Garvey Jan 1998

Catholic Judges In Capital Cases, Amy Coney Barrett, John H. Garvey

Journal Articles

The Catholic Church's opposition to the death penalty places Catholic judges in a moral and legal bind. While these judges are obliged by oath, professional commitment, and the demands of citizenship to enforce the death penalty, they are also obliged to adhere to their church's teaching on moral matters. Although the legal system has a solution for this dilemma by allowing the recusal of judges whose convictions keep them from doing their job, Catholic judges will want to sit whenever possible without acting immorally. However, litigants and the general public are entitled to impartial justice, which may be something a …

The Bankruptcy Puzzle, Margaret F. Brinig, F. H. Buckley Jan 1998

The Bankruptcy Puzzle, Margaret F. Brinig, F. H. Buckley

Journal Articles

This article offers new evidence on the determinants of U.S. consumer bankruptcy filing rates, which tripled from 1984 to 1991. The run-up in filing rates does not appear to be a consequence of legal changes since the increase coincided with Bankruptcy Code amendments designed to reduce filing rates by rejecting opportunistic petitions. The run-up also coincided with a major economic boom and crested with the 1991 recession. However, much of the variation in district filing rates is attributable to differences in social variables, and we suggest that changes in social norms might account for the increased bankruptcy filings. This article …
