Pastors For Peace And The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Center: A Case Study Of Cooperation Between Two Nonprofit Organizations From Two Countries Without Diplomatic Relations, And With An Economic Embargo Enforced By One Country Against The Other, Alicia Beatriz Jrapko

Master's Theses

This thesis is a case study about an American nonprofit organization, Pastors for Peace, working with a Cuban counterpart, the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Center. This study is about cooperation between nonprofit organizations in two countries without diplomatic relations. In addition, there is an economic embargo imposed by the United States against Cuba. The research demonstrates that when an American nonprofit organization working abroad aims to change U.S. policy, the work will be controversial and difficult, and there will be some legal implications for the organization as an entity as well as for staff members and volunteers individually.

"Insects" From Atlas Of The Sand Hills, Brett C. Ratcliffe Oct 1998

"Insects" From Atlas Of The Sand Hills, Brett C. Ratcliffe

University of Nebraska State Museum: Entomology Papers

Because the Sand Hills are, for the most part, a treeless landscape of grass-covered sand dunes, most of the insects are adapted to sandy habitats and a dry, continental climate, as well as to the kinds of plants and other animals that live there. Unlike most forest-adapted species, insects in the Sand Hills tolerate drier and windier conditions and greater solar radiation. They have also been successful in surviving the periodic fires that are so necessary for maintaining native grasslands. In fact, the mosaic of habitats partially created by fire has probably contributed to increased insect diversity in the Sand …

Collateral Offsets To Workers’ Compensation Benefits, Mathew D. Staver Oct 1998

Collateral Offsets To Workers’ Compensation Benefits, Mathew D. Staver

Faculty Publications and Presentations

An employee who is injured in the course and scope of employment may be entitled to receive indemnity and medical benefits. However, the employer/carrier (E/C) also may be entitled to offset certain collateral benefits against workers' compensation indemnity benefits. The purpose behind the offset rules is to prevent an injured employee from reaping a windfall from the work accident so that the employee is not compensated more after than before the accident.

The Top Ten Reasons Clients File Grievances Against Their Lawyers, Edward Kinkeade Oct 1998

The Top Ten Reasons Clients File Grievances Against Their Lawyers, Edward Kinkeade

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

Lawyers must abide by their ethical duties and responsibilities before, during, and after representing a client. Failing to do so exposes a lawyer to disciplinary action and legal malpractice. Unfortunately, many lawyers, through calculated risk or carelessness, violate the very rules that protect their profession. The following article is based on a compilation of the actual number of grievances filed in Texas grievance committees. Although these numbers are not the whole story of why grievances were filed against lawyers, they serve as signals to the bar of major pitfalls to avoid. This paper includes an outline of the grievance procedure …

Frequent Flyer Awards As Taxable Income: Time To Pay The Tax Man, Sharon Alice Pouzar Oct 1998

Frequent Flyer Awards As Taxable Income: Time To Pay The Tax Man, Sharon Alice Pouzar

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This Comment will argue the Service's position should shift to aggressively collect all applicable taxes on frequent flyer benefits. Part I of this Comment provides a brief overview of the frequent flyer phenomena. Part II analyzes whether frequent flyer benefits are taxable income or excluded from income. Part III proposes a method both to value the benefits earned and to establish the timing of the event. The Conclusion calls for aggressive enforcement of the collection of income taxes on qualifying transactions.
