Measurements Of Methane Emissions From Rice Fields In China, M. A. K. Khalil, R. A. Rasmussen, Martha J. Shearer, R. W. Dalluge, Lixin Ren, Chang-Lin Duan

Rice fields have always been regarded as one of the largest anthropogenic sources of atmospheric methane. Here we report the results of a 7-year study of methane emissions from rice fields in the Sichuan Province of China. In this region, there is one crop of rice per year, the fields are continuously flooded from transplanting to harvest, and there is heavy use of organic fertilizers. Emissions over the entire growing season were measured from each of up to 24 plots. Environmental variables were measured and relevant supporting data on the agricultural practices were recorded. Although the mechanics differ, GEFs appear to deform their substrates in similar ways. In all cases, switch I is pulled away from switch II and the P loop, exposing the active site; dislocation of switch I also displaces a Mg2+-binding residue, but this in itself should have little affect on GDP affinity. GEFs also restructure and displace the amino terminus of switch II and consequently dismantle the χ-phosphate-binding site, at the same time moving a conserved aspartate residue that serves as a water-mediated Mg2+ ligand. Type material for 16 nominal species of fossil Coleoidea, Monoplacophora and Scaphopoda are in the Invertebrate Paleontology Collections of Yale University's Peabody Museum of Natural History. Primary types for 6 nominal species include 4 holotypes, and 4 syntypes (representing 2 nominal species). Secondary types for 2 nominal species include 2 paratypes. Tertiary types for 6 nominal species include 19 hypotypes. Most types are from New York, Nova Scotia, Oklahoma and South Dakota and have been described by J.S. Peel, P.E. Raymond, L.W. Stephenson and K.M. Waage.
