We have fabricated a novel low off-state leakage current thin-film transistor (TFT) using a chlorine incorporated amorphous silicon [a-Si:H(:Cl)] and amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) stacked active layer, in which conduction channel is formed in a-Si:H and a-Si:H(:Cl) is photo-insensitive material. The off-state photo-leakage current of the a-Si:H(:Cl)/a-Si:H TFT is much lower than that a conventional a-Si:H TFT.

The development of effective chiral stationary phases (CSPs) and separation strategies for the liquid chromatographic (LC) resolution of enantiomers has been beneficial to many scientific disciplines. Over the last decade the number and type of CSPs has expanded tremendously. Not only have new classes of chiral selectors been introduced, but also many of the first CSPs have been changed and/or improved. The second or third generation of a CSP often can be different from the original. This can be confusing and intimidating to someone just entering the area of LC enantiomeric separations. Under socialism, Poland suffered tremendous environmental devastation. After socialism, Poland's environmental performance has improved remarkably. This book explains that system-specific institutions of socialism undermined environmental protection by creating regulatory conflicts of interest that led the Party/state to soften budget and law constraints on polluters. Those problems have diminished in post-Communist Poland as socialist legal, political and economic institutions have been replaced by liberal-democratic institutions and competitive markets. The analysis carries important implications for an institutional theory of environmental protection.

Since its inception, Bowlby's attachment theory has guided research in the area of attachment. A body of literature supports the conclusion that when attachment needs are not met in the first year of life, serious deficits and problems can occur. The present study adds to the existing literature by examining attachment in adolescents, an age group not frequently researched. Specifically, this study examines the relationship between attachment and multiple out-of-home placements for adolescent males living in a residential treatment facility.

Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution (HBOI) has a worldwide collection of over 25,000 marine macro-invertebrates and algae representing diverse geographical, latitudinal, and depth (0-3000 ft) ranges. Samples are tested for biological activity in a panel of whole cell and enzyme/receptor assays, including antibacterial, antifungal, cytotoxicity, antitumor, and immunomodulatory assays. Of the taxa sampled, Porifera have the greatest incidence of activity within these screens and especially within the antimicrobial assays. Cnidaria, Chordata (Ascidiacea), Phaeophyta, and Chlorophyta also show strong antimicrobial activity. A comparison of bioactivity and depth of collection indicates that benthic organisms are active throughout the depth range of this study. …

Guiding high ability girls during their middle school and high school years has been as complex and enigmatic as the subjects themselves. This review attempted to synthesize information concerning characteristics and needs of adolescent girls, gifted adolescents, and gifted adolescent girls. Those specific needs would help determine what programming options could be implemented in the secondary schools to help gifted females reach their potential. The conclusions drawn from the literature point to a smorgasbord of programming options that can be implemented through collaboration among talented and gifted programs, school-wide efforts, and community-wide strategies.

The theory behind the study of educational technology includes the four paradigms defined by Saettler (1990): the media view, the communications and systems view, the behavioral sciences view, and the cognitive science concept. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) continues to be widely studied within the literature and researchers continue to investigate interventions and environments which allow for success. Whalen and Renker (1991) argue that multiple intervention methods are needed for success of children and adolescents in social situations. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature, and review interventions used to facilitate appropriate behaviors in children, aged six to eleven, with a diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

We Americans think we're so darned smart. We invented modern environmental law, developed its sophisticated "command-and-control" structure, got the public involved as never before in fighting corporate polluters, and achieved measurable successes by getting lead out of our air and bald eagles back from near extinction. We've even tried "second generation" tools such as emissions trading systems' and incentive-based regulatory flexibility approaches when we discovered our system's limitations. Not that we've got it all figured out, mind you, but we're inclined to think of ourselves as world leaders when it comes to environmental protection.

The role environmental context has on performance level may change based on the skill being learned and the performer of that skill. The present study was designed to examine the role of environmental context in the learning of a 4-key motor sequence task. The present study had two primary purposes: first, replicating findings of a limited context effect in younger adults, and second, extending the findings to older adults to look at changes related to aging and environmental context. ANOVA results revealed no significant context effect in the present study for younger adults, and therefore comparisons between younger and older …

Autologous activated T cells (ATC) are being utilized in clinical trials as potential mediators of anti-tumor cytotoxicity in refractory cancer patients who suffer from hematologic malignancies or solid tumors. ATC are readily generated from peripheral blood and possess non-major histocompatibility complex (non-MHC) restricted killing properties. ATC are also powerful targets for genetic modification and hold promise for treatments of cancer, AIDS and T cell disorders. The nuclear matrix, the RNA-protein skeleton of the nucleus, is known to play functional and structural roles within the cell. My thesis investigated the roles of the nuclear matrix proteins under various circumstances. First, the rat prostate cancer cell line (MLL) was injected into various sites within the rat. Tumors were isolated and nuclear matrix proteins isolated and analyzed by two-dimensional electrophoresis. Upon comparison, distinct nuclear matrix protein differences were observed in all of the organ sites that were investigated suggesting that the extracellular matrix, as well as growth factors and hormones, may be important in directing the production of …

Expression of a number of genes during cellular differentiation is controlled at the level of transcription. Cell type- and time-specific patterns of gene transcription result from the interaction between cis-acting elements and trans-acting factors. In order to understand the molecular mechanisms of gene expression at the level of transcription, the regulatory region of the glutamine synthetase (GS) gene was investigated using both functional and binding analyses. GS expression increases more than 100-fold during differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells into adipocytes. Recently, Hadden et al. Ribonuclease III (RNase III) is a double-stranded-RNA-specific nuclease of Escherichia coli. RNase III functions as a homodimer. The 25.6 kDa subunit contains two domains, a 148 residue catalytic domain and a 78 residue double-stranded-RNA-binding domain (dsRBD). RNase III is involved in the maturation of the 16S and 23S rRNAs, the degradation of mRNA, and the maturation of T7 phage polycistronic early, middle, and late mRNAs. Bacteriophage T7 expresses a protein kinase (T7 PK), which is cAMP-independent, serine/threonine-specific, and phosphorylates over 90 cellular proteins, including RNase III during infection. Carbon dioxide (CO2 and diacetyl (DA; 2, 3-butanedione) inhibit Gram-negative bacteria. Diacetyl inhibits the amino acid utilization of arginine. This inhibition occurs in the periplasmic space and CO2 may exert its influence in the periplasmic space as well. Therefore, this study investigated the effect of CO2 and diacetyl alone or combined on the Gram-negative spoilage organisms found in ground beef. The effect of diacety1 on decarboxylase activity of spoilage organisms found in fresh ground beef was determined using an automated system that provides real time information of microbial activity producing a dynamic curve similar to the growth curve.
