Visualization of information is currently touted in many major disciplines as the best way to manage large amounts of data and make information intuitively accessible. The law suffers from the same information complexity as other disciplines, but has heretofore failed to investigate the possibilities of approaching the law visually. This Comment employs the metaphor of legal map-making as a way to introduce the concept of visualizing the law. It presents two methods for making legal maps. The study seeks to understand and develop insights into the San Diego-Tijuana transborder economic collaborative partnership, by examining the Binational Planning and Coordination Committee (BPCC). This entity was established in 1993 via a Letter of Agreement between the City of San Diego and the municipality of Tijuana. Pursuant to the Letter of Agreement the BPCC is examined against the backdrop of the global economy, the emergence of region-states, U.S.-Mexico relations and transborder relations in the San Diego-Tijuana region. The Northern Australia Quarantine Strategy (NAQS) was established in 1989 as an outcome of a major evaluation of quarantine in Australia (AGPS 1987, 1988). NAQS activities include surveying for weeds,insect pests and diseases of plants; and pests and diseases of animals in northern Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. The primary goal is to provide early detection and warning of new quarantine threats or incursions.

The reproductive health (RH) movement worldwide has brought reproductive tract infections (RTIs) under sharp focus as an urgent health need of women. While RTIs are preventable or treatable, they are often the cause of infertility, ectopic pregnancy, cervical cancer, fetal loss, low birth-weight infants, infant blindness, and neonatal pneumonia. The adverse health effects of RTIs, particularly STIs, is much higher for women than men. Recent research has demonstrated that RTIs are closely linked to other areas of health care like family planning (FP), safe motherhood, child survival, and HIV prevention. For as long as there have been family planning programs, there has been family planning research. At the theoretical level, researchers examine the effect of fertility on health and socioeconomic development and study the determinants of fertility for individuals and populations. At the policy level, studies explore the role of family planning programs in modifying fertility and health. The development of new contraceptives is accompanied by clinical and pre-introductory trials in program settings. The Saccharomyces cerevisiae genome contains five P-type ATPases divergent from both of the well-known subfamilies of these membrane ion transporters. This newly recognized third subfamily can be further divided into four classes of genes with nearly equal relatedness to each other. Genes of this new subfamily are also present and expressed in multicellular organisms such as Caenorhabditis elegans and mammals; some, but not all, can be assigned to the classes identified in yeast. This intervention study was designed to improve the quality of family planning (FP) services within the Integrated Family Planning and Maternal Health Program of the Pangasinan Population and Family Planning Program in the Philippines. It addresses high unmet need and studies the feasibility of enhancing quality of services by training service providers in fixed clinics and orienting outreach workers on the method of identifying women who have unmet need for FP. The three-dimensional structure of Aspergillus niger pectin lyase B (PLB) has been determined by crystallographic techniques at a resolution of 1.7 Å. The model, with all 359 amino acids and 339 water molecules, refines to a final crystallographic R factor of 16.5%. The polypeptide backbone folds into a large right-handed cylinder, termed a parallel b helix. Loops of various sizes and conformations protrude from the central helix and probably confer function. The largest loop of 53 residues folds into a small domain consisting of three antiparallel b strands, one turn of an a helix, and one turn of a 310 …

In this study, the Schiff base 2-[4-Dimethylaminocinnamalamino]- benzoic acid [(CH$_3$)$_2$N.C$_6$H$_4$.CH:CH.N.C$_6$H$_4$.COOH] (DACAB) was prepared by the reaction of 2-Aminobenzoic acid with p-Dimethylaminocinnamaldehyde. The protonation constants of the ligand were determined in a 50\% (v/v) dioxane - water medium using the Irving-Rossotti and PKAS-BEST computer methods. The complexes of Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) with DACAB were synthesized and the structures of these complexes were elucidated by means of data obtained from elemental analysis, using IR, $^1$H-NMR methods. The magnetic properties of the solid complexes were measured.

Characterization Of Seven Transmembrane Domain Receptor Gene Expression In Olfactory Receptor Neurons., Kathryn Medler

The expression of 7 transmembrane domain receptors in olfactory receptor neurons of the channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus was characterized. Due to disagreements in the literature as to how many odorant receptor genes are expressed in olfactory neurons, this study directly measured the number of odorant receptor gene transcripts expressed in single olfactory neurons. Individual olfactory receptor neurons can express more than one receptor, with some neurons expressing at least 3 to 4 receptors. These findings correlate with electrophysiological evidence but disagree with conclusions based on in situ hybridization. Receptors similar to odorant receptors are also expressed in taste buds, indicating …

The availability of sophisticated and ultra-sensitive analytical tools and the maturity of organic synthesis have opened new possibilities for fabrication of molecular materials designed at the nanometer scale. Presently, the most promising and widely investigated methodologies are the self-assembly and Langmuir-Blodgett procedures. The former relies on the strong, preferential affinity of specific functional groups to solid surfaces, whereas the latter involves transfer of pre-formed mono layers at the air-water interface onto solid substrates. These techniques and their recent applications are reviewed.

Although current research has studied t he relationship between self-esteem and alcohol involvement among college students, the results have been inconclusive. The majority of studies have used either the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory or the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale to establish the level of self-esteem in their subjects. This study attempted to further previous research by using an alternative measure of self-esteem. This study examined whether self-esteem had a significant effect on reading and math achievement. Data were collected from 90 third and fifth grade students in a Midwestern, suburban elementary school. Results of a self-esteem test (Piers-Harris Children's Self-concept Scale) were correlated to standardized reading and math test scores (Missouri Mastery and Achievement Test, MMA T). The results indicated a direct correlation. The variation in the level of self-esteem scores suggests a parallel relationship with reading and math achievement scores. The difference in the average self esteem scores between African American and White female adolescents was the focus of this study. The subjects were adolescent females ranging from 14 to 18 years of age. The students all attended the same suburban high school. The participants were administered the Rosenberg Self Esteem Inventory. The results found no significant difference between the self esteem scores of African American and White adolescent females.

Considering the emergent role of evaluation in higher education, it is important that assessment procedures be developed for all communication courses. Courses such as public speaking already have well established assessment programs while other courses are in need of additional attention. This article describes an assessment program that examines the impact of an interpersonal course on undergraduates' self-perceived behavioral and affective competence. Using a pre- and post-test model, assessment was based on administration of the Communication Behaviors Inventory, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the Willingness to Communicate Scale.
