Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a constrained multiobjecthe optimzation method in the form of a robust, practical, problem-independent algorithm, and investigates the effect of multiobjective optimization on structural design. The study includes properties and characteristics of multiobjective optimization and solutions. Design objectives, constraints, and design variables as well as their effect on structural design and behavior are investigated. Fuzzy set theory is also included to construct a fuzzy constrained environment. Two new genetic algorithm operators — multiobjective fitness function and niche method -- are proposed. A new genetic algorithm process, Pareto set filter, is added to genetic algorithms. A 10-story setback building …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if personality differences exist among general surgeons, anesthesiologists, and family practice physicians. The 16 Personality Factor (16PF) questionnaire was used to describe the personality factors of general surgery, anesthesiology, and family medical specialties. A total of 161 physicians participated in the study. The sample consisted of 52 general surgeons, 51 anesthesiologists, and 58 family practice physicians. A stepwise discriminant analysis was used to analyze the data to determine whether general surgeons, anesthesiologists, and family practice physicians could be differentiated by a set of 16 personality factors and five global factors of the …

In an effort to develop a chemical control strategy for the invasive Argentine ant. Linepithema humile (Mayr), in Haleakala National Park, Maxforce, which is formulated with 0.9% hydramethylnon, was used in test plots to determine the efficacy of the ant bait in the field. Initially, Maxforce was tested at 2 application rates: broadcast at 2.25 kg/ha (2 lb/ acre) and 4.5 kg/ha (4 lb/acre). Later, the following treatments were also tested: a Maxforce and honey granule mix, Maxforce with 0.5% hydramethylnon, Maxforce with a different solvent, Maxforce distributed in exposed piles, and Maxforce distributed in covered piles. The purpose of this NebGuide is to define some critical issues to be addressed by an abandonment plan of an earthen manure storage, anaerobic lagoon or runoff holding pond.

A Nebraska construction permit for a Livestock Waste Control Facility (LWCF) requires a written plan defining possible abandonment procedures in the event the operation (and associated LWCF) is discontinued. The plan must be approved by the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality (NDEQ) prior to permit issuance.

Waste is inevitable. Things which have been outgrown, broken, replaced, or are just no longer needed add to the waste produced at homes, acreages and around farms. Most of the waste accumulated around the farm, acreage and home is solid waste. Solid waste includes all discarded materials — newspapers, empty paint cans, liquids, gases, pickle jars, orange peelings, leftover food, worn out shoes, junk mail — this list is endless. Some of these solid wastes contain potentially hazardous materials.

Why should I be concerned? Most Nebraska farmers apply some source of plant nutrients to help improve their crop production each year. Nutrients come from applied chemical fertilizers, manure or sewage sludge, and soil organic matter or legumes. When nutrients move off site or leach out of the root zone, they can pose a threat to the environment and the water we drink.

During the investigation of a collapsed building, inadequate design loads and inappropriate construction practices are often discovered. A building failure adversely affects a producer’s ability to generate income. A well designed and constructed building costs only slightly more than a mediocre one. Insisting on good design, use of high-quality materials and a qualified contractor reduces the risk of structural failure.

As the number of intercountry adoptions increases, it becomes important for countries like the United States to address the immigration needs of foreign children entering the country as the sons and daughters of its residents. This note provides an overview of the history of intercountry adoption in the United States. It gives examples of how the intercountry adoption process works, using China and Russia as examples of the complexity of the current process and the interplay between foreign and domestic law. Introduced roof rats (Rartus rattus) pose a substantial threat to the fauna and flora of many tropical islands. In the Caribbean, there is concern about rat impacts to several endangered species, including the Atlantic hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) and the least tern (Sterna antillarum). The authors surveyed the rat population on Buck Island, Buck Island Reef National Monument, U .S. Virgin Islands in February 1998. Traditional protective measures to keep wildlife away from areas include exclusion by use of netting, hazing, and chemical repellents. The primary problem with most hazing systems is that wildlife quickly habituate to the devices if their use falls into a predictable pattern. Repellent substances cause wildlife species to avoid otherwise attractive or palatable resources by creating a disincentive to visit a specific area or consume a particular resource. Chemical repellents, both lethal and non-lethal, are typically used for agricultural and horticultural purposes, but in addition may provide a strategy to deter wildlife in other contexts.
