Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Vitamin E and other antioxidants prevent or minimize oxidative damage in biological systems. The level of antioxidant defense sufficient to protect the organism from high free radical concentrations is one of the new horizons for Vitamin E research. The role of Vitamin E as a protective agent aganist oxidative stress was evaluated by meas-uring the antioxidant enzyme catalase (CAT) activities in different tissues of Swiss male albino rats aged two months. Binder Containing Plant Protein And Densified Refuse Fuel Cubes Made Using Same And Methods Of Making Them, Jerry D. Eastin, David Jones, Darin Dux, Harold Earl Egger

To form a binder from naturally occurring products or a fuel brick or pellet using the binder without extraction or purification steps, the binder utilizes proteins from the germ or endosperm of cereal grasses or from the seed of buckwheat, oil seed plants, Amaranthus or leguminous plants or from leaves or from grain stillage. The protein has a thermoplastic microstructure with linear polymers of molecular weight of at least 2,000 linked with peptide linkages of at least 50 in number. The binder is mixed with waste such as municipal waste without further processing and processed in a pelleting machine.

Results Of Investigations Into The Groundwater Response And Productivity Of High Water Use Agricultural Systems 1990-1997 5 White/Beattys' Catchment (Dinninup), A D. Smith, Richard J. George Dr, P R. Scott, D L. Bennett, R J. Rippon, G J. Orr

Resource management technical reports

High water use vegetation systems for salinity control were trialed on a 250 ha catchment located three km north-west of Dinninup, Western Australia. The catchment receives about 620 mm annual rainfall and 1500 mm annual evaporation. The catchment is characterised by slopes with gradients in excess of 5%, deep weathering (15-25 m to bedrock), active seepage in the valley (piezometric heads 204 m above ground surface) and high recharge (water table fluctuations of 1-4 m).

Battery-Operated Atomic Force Microscope, Burford J. Furman, J. Christman, M. Kearny, F. Wojcik, M. Tortonese

The design of a battery-operated atomic force microscope (AFM) using a piezoresistive cantilever is described. The AFM is designed so that all power to drive the scanning tube and detection electronics comes from a self-contained battery. The prototype AFM uses a 6 V, Ni–Cd, camcorder battery, however, any battery that supplies between 6 and 12 V may be used. Scanner control and data acquisition are implemented using commercially available software running on an external computer. The prototype AFM achieves a scan area of 53 by 53 μm, consumes 1.8 W of power, and can scan continuously for about 7 h …

In this study I measured resting metabolic rate (RMR), costs of thermoregulation, and specific dynamic action (SDA) in House Finches and I tested the hypothesis that SDA heat substitutes for costs of thermoregulation at low temperatures in House Finches. Oxygen consumption of both bed and fasted birds was measured at three different temperatures (5 C, 15 C, and 30 C) using an open flow metabolism system and converted to metabolic rate (kJ/hr) using caloric equivalents. RMR, obtained from the fasted metabolic rate within the thermoneutral zone (30 C) was 1.65+.10 kJ/hr. Costs of thermoregulation at 15 C and 5 C …

Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy is a rarely occurring disease not recognized in the past as a distinct entity. Prior to the advent of sophisticated molecular biology techniques in the early I 990s, precise diagnosis of the disease was impossible. However, identification of the altered proteins and underlying genetic defects has brought limb-girdle muscular dystrophy to the forefront of recent biomedical research. Many articles concerning the investigation into limb-girdle muscular dystrophy have been published in genetic and neuromuscular journals since 1992. The purpose of this EA is to amend the Land and Resource Management Plan (LRMP) for the Wilderness Management Standards and Guidelines (S&Gs). The need for the revised S&Gs is to provide more definable and measurable standards related to the items described in the Proposed Action. Current S&Gs do not provide sufficient direction to determine the trend of the Cloud Peak Wilderness (CPW) condition or require conflicting actions. The proposed S&Gs will facilitate determination of the trend of physical, biological and social aspects of the wilderness resource.

The Federal Coal Leasing Amendments Act of 1976 requires that Federal coal lands to be considered for leasing must be identified in a comprehensive land use plan. At the time the Great Divide Resource Management Plan (GDRA RMP, 1990) was prepared, approximately 60% of the Federal coal lands in the Carbon Basin Coal Area were leased and exempt from the coal screening/planning process. Subsequently, development of this lease was never pursued and the lease expired. In addition, the coal screening/planning process was not conducted on the remainder of the Federal coal lands in the Carbon Basin area during the RMP …
