Postoperative Infection Rates With Instrumented Lumbar Fusion: A Retrospective Review Of 129 Consecutive Cases, Nicole G. Kurzynske, Scott D. Hodges, Stephen C. Humphreys, Jason C. Eck, Laurie C. Covington Jan 1998

Postoperative Infection Rates With Instrumented Lumbar Fusion: A Retrospective Review Of 129 Consecutive Cases, Nicole G. Kurzynske, Scott D. Hodges, Stephen C. Humphreys, Jason C. Eck, Laurie C. Covington

Capstone Research Projects

Introduction: The use of internal fixation devices in spinal surgery is common to achieve reduction, maintain alignment, and stabilize the spine while fusion occurs. Infection rates of less than 2% (0-2%) were reported in the late 1960's without the use of instrumentation. Reported rates of infection following instrumented fusion are generally around 6% (range 0-11% ). The purpose of this study was to retrospectively review the incidence of postoperative infection following instrumented spinal fusion to determine if infection rates related to patient type and surgical procedure.

Methods: A retrospective review was conducted of 129 consecutive cases of instrumented lumbar spinal …

The Adhesion Of Streptococcus Sa/Ivarius And Staphylococcus Aureus To Five Dental Composite Resins, Arturo James Lopez Jan 1998

The Adhesion Of Streptococcus Sa/Ivarius And Staphylococcus Aureus To Five Dental Composite Resins, Arturo James Lopez

Capstone Research Projects

Resin composites are used for anterior esthetic restorative procedures. Breakdown areas between cavity preparations and restorative materials can provide potential sites of reinfection. Reducing the marginal breakdowns by using effective composite resins is important to reduce the amount of recurrent caries.

Each composite type was analyzed for bacterial adherence after bacterial exposure by microscopically counting them after staining. The purpose of this experiment was to measure and observe the ability of Streptococcus sa/ivarius and Staphylococcus aureus to adhere to five different resin composites (APH, Charisma, Herculite, Silux, and Z-100) using an in vitro assay.

It was found that there is …

Past Departments Faculty Publications (CELS)

Granulocytic Ehrlichia was isolated from canine blood obtained from animals challenged with field-collected Ixodes scapularis and propagated in HL60 cells. PCR primers specific for the 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) of the Ehrlichia genogroup comprising E. equi, E. phagocytophila, and the agent of human granulocytic ehrlichiosis (HGE) amplified DNA from extracts of these cells. Sequence analysis of this amplified DNA revealed that it is identical to the 16S rDNA sequence of the HGE agent. A genomic library was constructed with DNA from granulocyticEhrlichia and screened with pooled sera from tick-challenged, granulocytic Ehrlichia-infected dogs. Several clones were isolated …

Oyster Fisheries Management Of Maryland's Chesapeake Bay, Diana Locke Jan 1998

Oyster Fisheries Management Of Maryland's Chesapeake Bay, Diana Locke

Frank Dilley Award for Outstanding Doctoral Study

This study examines the concept of property rights in relation to fisheries resource management in the Maryland oyster fishery. An analysis of the past and present state of this fishery on the Chesapeake Bay focused on the administrative, biological, social, economic, and political influences in fisheries management and their potential consequences. This single fishery once provided a quarter of America's oysters but, if the oyster population decline continues, it may soon become a memory. Though Maryland has a dual property rights structure, private and public, the public fishery predominates. The reasons why privatization has not been a successfully implemented strategy, …

Fertilizer storage practices If stored safely in a secure location, fertilizers pose little danger to groundwater. Common sense suggests keeping fertilizer dry and out of the way of activities that might rip open a bag or allow rain to enter a bulk container.

Amphicyonidae, Robert Hunt Jan 1998

Amphicyonidae, Robert Hunt

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

The Amphicyonidae occur in North America from late Eocene (~40 Ma) to early late Miocene (~9 Ma), a span of 31 million years. In the North American land mammal biochronology, this diverse family extends from the Duchesnean to the end of the Clarendonian and is especially well represented in the Miocene (~5-24 Ma). In the Old World, amphicyonids survive no longer than in North America: The last European records are Vallesian (Dinotheriensande, Mainz Basin, Germany, Kuss, 1965, Tobien, 1980; Vallés-Penédes Basin, Spain, Crusafont-Pairó and Kurten, 1976), and the last representative may occur at about 9 Ma at Kohfidisch, Austria (latest …

Reproductive Demographics And Early Life History Of The Shovelnose Sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus Platorynchus), Robert E. Colombo Jan 1998

Reproductive Demographics And Early Life History Of The Shovelnose Sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus Platorynchus), Robert E. Colombo

Faculty Research & Creative Activity

Due to the collapse of the historic caviar fisheries in the Volga River and Caspian Sea, the demand on domestically produced caviar has increased. To supply the increased demand, the harvest of the shovelnose sturgeon Scaphirhynchus latorynchus has increased. Because caviar fisheries preferentially harvest females, information regardingthe sexual demographics of these populations is essential for effective fisheries management. To date, knowledge regarding the sex ratios and reproductive development of the shovelnose sturgeon population in the Middle Mississippi River is lacking. In Chapter 1, I describe this problem in detail and in subsequent chapters I explain how I addressed this problem …

Chemistry Faculty Publications

A hypothesis that the geometry of a potential fungicide must be consistent with that of the pores of the fungal spore wall in order to penetrate it and be toxic has been developed. Certain bis(8-quinolinolato)copper(II) complexes seemed to contradict this. To resolve this issue, structures of bis(7-fluoro-8-quinolinolato )copper(II) (1), bis(2-methyl-8-quinolinolato )copper(II) (2), and bis(2-methyl-7-nitro-8-quinolinolato)copper(II) (3) were solved. The ligands of 1 are square planar with copper at the center of symmetry. In 2 and 3 the methyl group at C2 interacts with the other 8- quinolinol ligand, producing a significant distortion of the square planar geometry which causes a rotation …
