Health Risks Of Drinking Raw (Unpasterurized) Milk, Kelly Namminga, E. Kim Cassel Feb 1998

Health Risks Of Drinking Raw (Unpasterurized) Milk, Kelly Namminga, E. Kim Cassel

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Why be concerned about drinking raw milk? All milk and milk products have the potential to transmit pathogenic (disease-causing) organisms to humans. All the nutritional components that make milk and milk products an important part of the human diet also support the growth of these pathogenic organisms. People who prefer, for whatever reason, to drink raw milk face the greatest risk of contact with these pathogens. Dairy producers selling or giving raw milk to friends and relatives put them at risk for foodborne illness.

Word Ways

There exist thousands of words which embody each of the five vowels A.E.I.O. and U once only, in any order (AEIOU words). In "AEIOU Words in Biology" in the November 1993 and February 1994 issues of Word Ways. I presented various categories of these AEIOU words. Since that time I Have been collecting examples which fall into the category entitled AEIOUS.

Maternal Employment, Child Care, And Nutritional Status Of 12-18-Month-Old Children In Managua, Nicaragua, Jessica F. Lamontagne, Patrice L. Engle, Marian F. Zeitlin

Psychology and Child Development

Relationships among women's employment, child care strategies, and nutritional status of children 12–18 months of age were examined in 80 Nicaraguan households sampled by randomized block design in 10 low income urban communities. Multiple regression analyses showed that children of employed mothers (56%) fared better in weight/height than those whose mothers were not employed. with and without controlling for socioeconomic status and maternal education, paternal financial support, child care adequacy, and sex and age of the child. Children with inadequate alternate child care (care by a preteen or care at the work place) had lower height for age, even controlling …

Mechanism Of Triazolo-Benzodiazepine And Benzodiazepine Action In Anxiety And Depression: Behavioral Studies With Concomitant In Vivo Ca1 Hippocampal Norepinephrine And Serotonin Release Detection In The Behaving Animal, Patricia A. Broderick, Omotola Hope, Pierrot Jeannot Feb 1998

Broderick, Omotola Hope, Pierrot Jeannot

Publications and Research

1. Real time, in vivo microvoltammetric studies were performed, using miniature carbon-based sensors, to concurrently detect norepinephrine (NE) release and serotonin (5-HT) release, in 2 separate electrochemical signals, within CA1 region of hippocampus in the freely moving and behaving, male, Sprague Dawley laboratory rat.

2. Concurrently, four parameters of open-field Behavior I.E. Ambulations, Rearing, Fine Movements and Central Ambulatory behavior (a measure of anxiety reduction behavior), were assayed by infrared photobeam detection.

3. Time course studies showed that the mechanism of action of the triazolobenzodiazepine (TBZD), adinazolam, (Deracyn®) is dramatically different from that of the classical benzodiazepine (BZD), diazepam …

Loss Of Cellular K+ Mimics Ribotoxic Stress, Mihail S. Iordanov, Bruce E. Magun Feb 1998

Loss Of Cellular K+ Mimics Ribotoxic Stress, Mihail S. Iordanov, Bruce E. Magun

CUP Faculty Research

The tumor promoter palytoxin has been found to activate the stress-activated protein kinase/c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase 1 (SAPK/JNK1), and it also potentiates, as demonstrated here, the p38/HOG1 mitogen-activated protein kinase and the upstream activator of SAPK/JNK1, SEK1/MKK4. In search of possible mechanisms for both the cytotoxicity and the activation of stress kinases by palytoxin, we found that palytoxin is a potent inhibitor of cellular protein synthesis. The inhibition of translation by palytoxin does not result from its direct binding to the translational apparatus. We have previously demonstrated that ribotoxic stressors (Iordanov, M. S., Pribnow, D., Magun, J. L., Dinh, …
