Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Research
Time-of-flight mass spectroscopy was used to study the relaxation dynamics of HCl following photoexcitation in the vicinity of the Cl K edge (~2.8 keV) using monochromatic synchrotron radiation. At the lowest resonant excitation to the 6ơ* antibonding orbital, almost half of the excited molecules decay by emission of a neutral H atom, mostly in coincidence with a highly charged Cln1 ion. The present work demonstrates that neutral-atom emission can be a significant decay channel for excited states with very short lifetimes (1 fs). [S1050-2947(98)03604-X]

Characterization Of Swinepox Virus Secretory Polypeptides, Takeshi Shimamura
Characterization Of Swinepox Virus Secretory Polypeptides, Takeshi Shimamura
Masters Theses
Swinepox virus (SPV) is the only known member of the genus Suispoxvirus. SPV causes a mild disease in swine characterized by slight fever, and weight loss, associated with lesions restricted to the skin. There have been few studies on SPV. Other poxviruses, such as vaccinia virus, have been well characterized and the biological activities of their secretory polypeptides have been analyzed. This study describes a major SPV secretory polypeptide with an apparent molecular mass of 35kDa. Poxvirus encoded polypeptides secreted during infection are known to exhibit immunomodulatory activities. The 35kDa SPV secretory polypeptide was tested.for its ability to inhibit …
Effects Of The Prbar And Powerbar On Fat Metabolism, Chad F. Witt
Effects Of The Prbar And Powerbar On Fat Metabolism, Chad F. Witt
Masters Theses
The purpose was to compare the effect of dietary supplementation using two different energy bars, the PRBar and the PowerBar, ingested 1 hour before exercise, on the exercise metabolism of endurance athletes. Four dependent variables were measured: respiratory exchange ratio (R), oxygen consumption (VO2), rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and blood glucose. Independent variables were bars (2), trials (2), and sample time. Sample times occurred at 5-min intervals for R, VO2, and RPE. Blood glucose was sampled before exercise, at 15 min and 25 min during exercise, and after exercise. Subjects completed four 35-min training runs, …

Electrophoretic Deposition Of Polymer Chains On An Adsorbing Surface In (2+1) Dimensions: Conformational Anisotropy And Nonuniversal Coverage, Grace M. Foo, Ras B. Pandey
Faculty Publications
Electrophoretic deposition of polymer chains flowing in a (2 + 1)-dimensional system is studied by computer simulations. Steady-state surface coverage θj is found to decay with the chain's length, i.e., θj∼Lc-a with a nonuniversal exponent α≃0.0-0.9 depending on the magnitude of driving field and temperature. Conformational crossover occurs for chains from a surface or wall to an adjacent bulk region with different scaling exponents for their longitudinal and transverse spread.
The Seven Degrees Of Relevance: Why Should Real-World Environmental Attorneys Care Now About Sustainable Development Policy?, J.B. Ruhl
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
This article explores the evolution of the concept of "sustainable development" through what I suggest are the "seven degrees" of relevance of legal conceptualizations: (1) translation of concept into norm; (2) uncontestability of the norm; (3) intolerance of violation of the norm; (4) demand for fulfillment of the norm; (5) translation of the norm as policy goal; (6) policy consequences based on the norm; (7) translation into hard law to apply. I suggest that, at the time of the writing (1998), sustainable development was stuck on level five.

Antigen-Specific Cd8+ T Cells Protect Against Lethal Toxoplasmosis In Mice Infected With Neospora Caninum, Lloyd H. Kasper, Imtiaz A. Khan
Dartmouth Scholarship
Neospora caninum is a coccidial protozoan parasite that appears morphologically indistinguishable from Toxoplasma gondii and that infects a large range of mammals. Both inbred and outbred strains of mice exhibit a high degree of resistance to infection with N. caninum. Three inbred strains of mice (A/J, BALB/c, and C57BL/6) that were infected intraperitoneally with N. caninum were protected against a lethal challenge from T. gondii. Vaccine-induced protection was Neospora dose dependent. A rise in the CD8+ T-cell population in mice that had been vaccinated with N. caninum and challenged with T. gondii was observed. Adoptive transfer of CD8+ T-cell splenocytes …
Perceptions About The Environment From The Cayo District Of Belize, Jeanie Vincent
Perceptions About The Environment From The Cayo District Of Belize, Jeanie Vincent
Student Work
Land use from associated exponential human population growth is causing dynamic and destructive changes on the Earth's surface. Before land use management can be modified to conserve our remaining global resources, however, a better understanding is needed of how physical and social land use aspects interact. This social science research was conducted to answer the research question of 'what variations in perception exist among three categories of the social construct; Local Workers, Land Owners/Managers, and Tourists in the Cayo District of Belize. Also examined were pertinent background factors and individual characteristics involved in perception and relationship formation such as social …
Service Learning On The Information Superhighway, Bonnie Bracey
Service Learning On The Information Superhighway, Bonnie Bracey
Service Learning, General
The Information Superhighway is more than the Internet. It is a series of components, including the collection of...high-speed, interactive...networks that exist today and will emerge tomorrow. It is the satellite, terrestrial, and wireless technologies....It is the information and content that flow over the infrastructure....It is the computers, televisions, telephones, radios, and other products....It is the people who will provide, manage, and generate new information....And it is the individual Americans who will use and benefit from the Information Superhighway. The Information Superhighway...encompasses all these components and captures the vision of a nationwide, invisible, seamless, dynamic web of transmission mechanisms, information, appliances, …

What Are Students Learning?: Assessing Service Learning And The Curriculum, Kathryn Blash Cumbo, Jennifer A. Vadeboncoeur
Service Learning, General
Service learning, a method of learning and teaching, has the potential to move our educational system into the 21st century by providing a vehicle for integrating the needs of schools and communities while reflecting current reform agendas and providing meaningful learning experiences for students. In order for service learning to play a role in the transformation of our schools, however, educators must become successful at linking service to learning- making connections between service experiences and academic learning explicit. This paper explores the meaning of learning in service learning by explicating: a) how service learning links to current standards based reform …

Blood Ties: A Rationale For Child Visitation By Legal Strangers, John Dewitt Gregory
Blood Ties: A Rationale For Child Visitation By Legal Strangers, John Dewitt Gregory
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
This Article addresses some of the issues that arise when non-parents seek visitation with other peoples' children. More often than not, natural parents successfully resist assertions of child visitation rights by legal strangers such as stepparents and so-called lesbian "coparents."' However, grandparents, aided by a raft of legislation and judicial decisions, fare infinitely better when petitioning for visitation with their grandchildren. This Article discusses the current law and legal scholarship concerning visitation rights of legal strangers and concludes that courts and legislatures should support legal parents' rights to raise their children without unwanted interference from legal strangers
Character Education: Developing Effective Programs, Annette Kusgen Mcdaniel
Character Education: Developing Effective Programs, Annette Kusgen Mcdaniel
Journal of Extension
The recent character education movement has spawned many questions related to which methods are the most appropriate approaches to character education. A review of the existing research literature on moral development and character education programs has uncovered several effective and ineffective approaches to character education. Implications for 4-H youth development programs are discussed.

The Destruction Of The Brazilian Amazon: An International Problem, Jacqueline Klosek
The Destruction Of The Brazilian Amazon: An International Problem, Jacqueline Klosek
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
The destruction of the Brazilian Amazon is a global environmental crisis necessitating international cooperation and responsibility, particularly from developed nations, due to its far-reaching consequences for biodiversity, climate change, and human rights. The note argues that while Brazil bears primary responsibility, the international community, especially developed countries, must assist in addressing the issue due to their historical and ongoing contributions to the problem.

Collection Of Information About Farm Management Practices, Steven W. Coffey, Gregory D. Jennings, Frank J. Humenik
Collection Of Information About Farm Management Practices, Steven W. Coffey, Gregory D. Jennings, Frank J. Humenik
Journal of Extension
Researchers need information on best management practices (BMPs) installed by farmers to quantify the effect of BMPs on watershed-scale water quality and to educate farmers on which BMPs are the most suitable to achieve water quality goals. The goal is to provide farmers with educational assistance so they can make informed decisions on BMPs. However, farmers may be unable or unwilling to share the information needed by researchers. Targeting survey efforts to representative farmsteads or study areas is recommended to increase data acquisition success and reliability if assumptions of data transferability are correct. Windshield surveys of crops and review of …

I believe the work that lawyers, legal academics, and judges do is important. Our work allows us to devise legal theories, develop litigation strategies and determine outcomes that can make a tremendous difference in people's lives. As a result, I applaud the insight and creativity of Judge Beck and Professors Glennon and Goldfarb. Their work demonstrates how law can be used to protect gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, their relationships and their families.

Thin-Layer Prestressed Composite Ferroelectric Driver And Sensor Characterization With Application To Separation Flow Control, Karla M. Mossi
Thin-Layer Prestressed Composite Ferroelectric Driver And Sensor Characterization With Application To Separation Flow Control, Karla M. Mossi
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Experiments were conducted in two different stages--general piezoelectric actuator characterization and flow separation control applications. The characterization of the piezoelectric devices was performed in several stages, due to the many variables that affect performance. The first stage of the characterization consisted of tests conducted on 13 different THUNDERTM (thin-layer composite unimorph ferroelectric driver and sensor) configurations. These configurations consisted of a combination of 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 layers of 25μ thick aluminum as backing material, with and without a top layer of 25μ aluminum. All of these configurations used the same piezoelectric ceramic wafer (PZT-5A) with dimensions …
