Trophic Diversity Of A Mesopelagic Fish Community., Tracey Sutton, Thomas L. Hopkins, Thomas M. Lancraft

To understand the character of prey partitioning in a low latitude oligotrophic region, a composite picture of the trophic structure of a mesopelagic fish community was made from the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Two hundred and twenty three species were collected in the area of which I61 species were abundant enough for analyses. Fifteen major categories of prey biomass are identified for diet analyses: viz. copepods, ostracods, amphipods, euphausiids, decapods, larvaceans, salps, coelenterates (primarily siphonophores), unidentified gelatinous prey, polychaetes, gastropods, cephalopods, chaetognaths, fish, other food. Emerging Issues With The Predictive Applications Of The Gre In Educational Administration Programs: One Doctoral Program's Experience, Jane Clark Lindle, James S. Rinehart

Little information exists as to the efficacy of using the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) as a predictor of success for nontraditional students' graduate studies. Since many students in doctoral education programs are nontraditional matriculants, an investigation of the relationship between GRE scores and student success in one such program is discussed. Records of 74 doctoral students enrolled in educational administration since 1992 were obtained to examine the independent variables. A questionnaire was used to collect faculty perceptions of student scholarship (potential) as the dependent variable. The results indicated three significant predictors of student scholarship potential: grade point average, analytic score …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the presence, origins, contents and purposes of Internet Acceptable Use Policies being used to address issues and concerns surrounding the Internet in 100 selected K-12 schools in the United States. The implementation practices of educators utilizing AUPs and the attitudes of educators toward the Internet were also examined. The study also investigated the number and location of Internet connections in the selected K-12 schools. There is a well documented global requirement for some twenty million tonnes of edible sea foods from aquaculture in the next fifteen years. Most of the projected increase in production will need to be from mariculture because of limiting factors on land based aquaculture. At present, approximately 85%of all aquaculture occurs in the Asian region.

Globally, temperate water species have market advantages because of their ability to supply a growing market preference for a firm white fleshed fin fish. The United States submarine Memphis grounded in approximately 10 m water depth on a tropical coral reef ofT southeast Florida in February, 1993. The grounding caused extensive physical and biological damage to the reef substrate and to the coral community. As part of a claim by the State of Florida against the United States, the impact of the grounding was assessed, and the area of damage was determined through field and photographic studies. A recovery rate for the reef was assigned from literature estimates. The NOAA Habitat Equivalency Model (HEM) was used to calculate the reef area needed to be …

High-resolution probes mounted on the bow of the vessel at a 1.7-m depth in an undisturbed region ahead of the moving vessel were used for microstructure and turbulence measurements in the near-surface layer of the ocean during TOGA COARE. The probes measured temperature, conductivity, pressure, three-component fluctuation velocity, and two components of acceleration. Accumulation of large amounts of high-quality nearsurface data poses a difficult challenge, and deployment from the bow of a ship, such as is done with these sensors, requires rugged, well-calibrated, and low-noise sensors. Photoinduced electron-transfer rate constants were measured for a series of binuclear metallopeptides consisting of a [Ru(bpy)(2)(cmbpy)](2+) electron donor tethered to a Co-III(NH3)(5) electron acceptor by an oligovaline peptide chain (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, cmbpy = 4-carboxy-4'-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine). These compounds were shown by H-1 NMR to adopt the conformational properties found within the individual strands of a beta-pleated sheet in both aqueous and methanol solutions. Emission lifetime measurements and HPLC product analysis show that the binuclear donor/acceptor compounds undergo photoinduced electron transfer (ET). The values of k(et) decrease with increasing donor/acceptor distance according to the expression k(et) = k' exp[-beta(r(-)r(0))]. A distance attenuation …
