A Recursive Green's Function Method For Boundary Integral Analysis Of Inhomogeneous Domains, Jim D. Freeze, Michael A. Jensen

The recursive Green's function method (RGFM) for computation of fields scattered by two-dimensional (2-D) inhomogeneous dielectric bodies is presented. The algorithm efficiently constructs the Green's function for the inhomogeneous region by recursively combining known Green's functions from smaller subdomains. The fields on the scatterer surface are then computed using a boundary integral formulation. Proper implementation of the RGFM results in computational and storage complexities which scale as N1.5 and N, respectively, where N is the total number of discrete cells in a domain. Uncertainty In Recharge From Subsidence Craters At Frenchman Flat, Nevada Test Site: Impacts Of Initial And Boundary Conditions And Media Properties, David Matthew Ely

The Nevada Test Site has over 400 subsidence craters formed by the collapse of overlying rock following underground nuclear tests. Under natural conditions, infiltration and recharge would not be considered likely due to infrequent precipitation events and extreme evapotranspiration. Crater U5a in Frenchman Flat was chosen for study because it intercepts significantly more drainage than surrounding craters. Vadose zone modeling was conducted to test the sensitivity of water movement to boundary and initial conditions. The effects of ponding depth was negligible but depth of wetting front movement was highly dependent on the lateral extent of the ponds. The model was …

Chinese Characters As Sources Of Design Of Furniture, Han-Lim Wee

Theses

This thesis is an exploration of possibilities of the translation of Chinese characters into furniture. It is not just the two dimensional image of the character that I wish to interpret into three dimensions, but I intend that the functions and uses of the furniture are to be the meaning of the word. The final pieces are intended to be recognized as to their meaning by anyone literate in Chinese character forms. Furniture that has both form and meaning will create new possibilities for furniture's role in the environment by having this extra dimension.

Molecular & Physical Characterization Of Threonine Dehydrogenase From Serratia Marcescens, Michael Wetherell

Theses

Threonine dehydrogenase has been purified from Serretia marcescens 450 fold to obtain 1300 micrograms of enzyme from 15 grams of cells. The amino-terminus has been sequenced and places it in a class with medium chain alcohol dehydrogenases from both Z.mobilus and E.coli. The native enzyme is a dimer of 35.6 kD sub-units containing approximately 324 amino acids. The gene structure of the enzyme is dissimilar from that of the E.coli TDH and may represent a mutation of an alcohol dehydrogenase with possible preference to propanol.

The increasing use of alternative crops has meant the introduction of new technologies to process their products. In this work, an alternative method is presented for the extraction of natural indigo from woad (Isatis tinctoria) based on a technique used to extract indigo from Indigofera spp. This method does not rely on the old fermentation procedure used throughout Northern Europe and is cheap, clean and efficient. Evolved from laboratory-based tests, it involves steeping the leaves at low pH in warm water and extracting the indigo at a higher pH, followed by ultra-filtration of the product, which is then left to …

Selenocysteine-Containing Proteins In Mammals, Vadim N. Gladyshev, Dolph L. Hatfield

Since the recent discovery of selenocysteine as the 21st amino acid in protein, the field of selenium biology has rapidly expanded. Twelve mammalian selenoproteins have been characterized to date and each contains selenocysteine that is incorporated in response to specific UGA code words. These selenoproteins have different cellular functions, but in those selenoproteins for which the function is known, selenocysteine is located at the active center. The presence of selenocysteine at critical sites in naturally occurring selenoproteins provides an explanation for the important role of selenium in human health and development. Photosynthetic Parameters And Empirical Modeling Of Primary Production: A Case Study On The Antarctic Peninsula Shelf, Mark A. Moline, Oscar Schofield, Nicolas P. Boucher

Biological Sciences

Eight hundred photosynthesis-irradiance relationships were determined in the shelf waters adjacent to Palmer Station, Antarctica during the spring/summer periods of 1991–94. Biomass specific maximum photosynthetic rate, P^B_max, and the light limited photosynthetic efficiency, α^B, were poorly correlated to the physical forcing and nutrient regimes at the sampling stations. The two photosynthetic parameters, however, did strongly covary indicating the minimum irradiance required to saturate photosynthesis, I^k, was relatively constant in this highly variable environment. The variability in I^k could partially be attributed to both depth in the water column and time of the …
