A major goal of the livestock industry is to produce a high-quality product for consumers. All livestock groups (beef, dairy, pork, and sheep) have developed quality assurance (QA) programs to help producers meet consumer expectations. The focus of QA programs in the past has been to address issues such as drug residue avoidance and/or elimination and to reduce quality defect in the meat produce. More recent consumer concerns about microbial contamination with organisms such as E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella, and Campylobacter, have prompted QA programs to begin to address pathogen reduction strategies on the farm. New Caribbean Locality For The Extinct Great White Shark Carcharodon, Clare Flemming, Donald A. Mcfarlane

Carcharodon is represented by a single upper tooth (Fig. 1) which we extracted from the eroding Pliocene limestone wall, some six meters above the floor at the northern end of Darby Sink. Much of the tooth is missing, but the remaining portion includes features diagnostic of this genus. The tooth conforms in size and morphology to Carcharodon megalodon (Agassiz, 1843), an extinct great white shark.

The acousticolateralis sensory system is characterized by a specific receptor cell type called the sensory hair cell and is found in all vertebrates. There are two types of hair cell sensory epithelia based on location: those of the inner ear, such as the organs for hearing and balance, and the lateral line system located within the epidermis. In mammals, including humans, loss or damage of the hair cells of the auditorysystem results in permanent hearing loss. However, this is not the case with birds and amphibians. Amphibians, with a lateral line system, are capable of replacing lost or damaged hair …

Therefore, since the structure of polymerase-beta shows significant evolutionary conservation in both plant and animal species and given strong functional correlations among species, polymerase-beta performs a vital role in plants in the repair of newly synthesized DNA just as it does in animal systems.

Signals used to attract mates are often conspicuous to predators and parasites, and their evolution via sexual selection is expected to be opposed by viability selection. Many secondary sexual traits may represent a compromise between attractiveness and avoidance of detection. Although such signal exploitation appears to be widespread, most examples come from species that use acoustic or olfactory mating signals, and relatively few cases of visual signal exploitation can be substantiated. Because males are usually the signaling sex, they are more at risk from predators or parasitoids that locate prey or hosts by sexual signals; this differential selection on the …

The Orthopterists' Society generously awarded me grants in 1995 and 1997 to conduct research on Teleogryllus oceanicus (Orthoptera: Gryllidae) on the Big Island of Hawaii. Here I report results to date from fieldwork conducted in the past few years.

A Second Pre-Wisconsinan Locality For The Extinct Jamaican Rodent, Clidomys (Rodentia: Heptaxodontidae), Donald A. Mcfarlane, Joyce Lundberg, Clare Flemming, Ross D. E. Macphee, Stein-Erik Lauritzen

Clidomys is the most distinctive but least well known member of the late Quaternary terrestrial mammal fauna of Jamaica. Here we report the second dated locality for this genus. The Illinoisan age we report further strengthens arguments we have made elsewhere, that Clidomys represents an early - probably pre-Wisconsinan - extinction that contrasts with the growing record of Holocene extinctions in the Antilles.

The are of great interest to visitors and support a relatively small but growing recreation and tourism industy.

These three Working Papers look at NAFTA after four years. In Part I, the authors examine NAFTA's impact on trade and investment in North America; in Part II, its impact on jobs and employment; and in Part III, its impact on environmental issues. They conclude that NAFTA is an important agreement that, together with the Uruguay Round accord, will influence patterns of trade and investment in the future. To date, NAFTA has had only a modest direct impact on patterns of trade, investment, jobs, and income. NAFTA side agreements have led to changes in environmental protection policy and in the …

Examining The Training And Practice Of School Psychologists: A Survey Of Intern Supervisors, Christopher Matthews

A survey was conducted to examine internship supervisors' perceptions of the level of preparation being provided to school psychology interns in the areas of Traditional Assessment, Non-Traditional Assessment, Consultation, Interventions, and Other skill areas. Twenty-five training institutions from 16 states were rated by the supervisors. The responding supervisors' job roles primarily consisted of practicing school psychologists. It was reported that interns spent about half of the total time in internship activities performing Traditional Assessment. Time spent in performing activities in the areas of Consultation, Interventions, and Nontraditional Assessment made up the majority of the other half with close to the …

As I contemplate the rise worldwide in intrastate (in contrast to interstate) conflicts (see, e.g., van Creveld, 1991 and K. Holsti, 1996), leading to Yugoslavian and Rwandan-type situations, I sense the need to do something about them. As Rousseau has said, "wars occur because there is nothing to prevent them" (cited in Waltz, 1959, p. 232). And quite frankly, there are few, if any, mechanisms worldwide relevant to staving off a future Yugoslavia, Rwanda, and the like (see Lund, 1996): witness the unfolding of the violent Albanian-Serbian conflict in Kosovo into a possible, wider Balkan war (see, e.g., …

The 23rd Conference on Senior Engineering Design Projects was held on December 1, 1998 at the College of Engineering and applied Sciences on the Parkview Campus of Western Michigan University. The college sponsors the conference to showcase the work of its graduating seniors, who are required to complete a capstone project that puts into practice what they have learned. Many of the projects are sponsored by business and industry.

The rhizosphere is a complex of biotic and abiotic factors and their interactions. It includes the soil, the micro- and megafauna, and a variety of autotrophic species. The goal of this study is to understand the belowground dynamics of the terrestrial orchid, Sniranthes cemua. through the characterization of soil nutrients, root system morphology, and mycorrhizal infection. Interrelationships among the soil, the mycorrhizae and S. cemua may explain the role of mycorrhizae in adult chlorophyllous orchids as well as the influence of soil nutrients on mycorrhizae. Morphine-Conditioned Changes In Locomotor Activity: Role Of The Conditioned Stimulus, Rick A. Bevins, Michael T. Bardo

When a multisensory environment was reliably paired with morphine (2 mg/kg) in rats, that environment, in a drug-free test, evoked a hyperactive conditioned response (CR). When an olfactory cue (banana odor) was the only stimulus element reliably paired with morphine, it also elicited a hyperactive CR. However, a gustatory cue (saccharin solution) evoked a hypoactive CR. This taste-elicited decrease in activity was dose dependent; morphine at 2 and 4 mg/kg conditioned hypoactivity, whereas a higher dose (8 mg/kg) did not. A robust conditioned saccharin aversion occurred only at the highest dose of morphine, suggesting disassociation between the hypoactive CR and …

Effects Of Food Deprivation, Age, Time Of Day, And Gamma Irradiation On Attraction Of Mexican Fruit Flies (Diptera: Tephritidae) To Two Synthetic Lures In A Wind Tunnel, David C. Robacker

The physiological condition of Mexican fruit flies, Anastrepha ludens (Loew), affected their attraction to 2 similar but qualitatively different synthetic lures in wind-tunnel bioassays. The 2 lures were BioLure (ammonium acetate and putrescine) and AMPu (ammonium carbonate, methylamine HCI, and putrescine) . Effects of food deprivation on attraction to the lures were smaller than the effects of sex, time of day, and irradiation. Sugar-fed, protein-starved flies were attracted more strongly than other hunger-status groups to the lures. Sugar-starved, protein-starved females were less responsive than other groups of females to AMPu. Protein-starved males were more responsive than protein-fed males to BioLure. …
