Several specimens of the isocrinid crinoid Neocrinus decorus were collected from a depth of 420 m off Bahamas Islands with the research submersible Johnson Sea Link. To study growth rates, these specimens were tagged, deployed and then recovered 250 days later. The average growth rate of stalk length is 10.8 cm.year⁻¹ with a maximum value at 14.3 cm.year⁻¹. These results allow us to propose a model of growth and regeneration for stalked crinoids in which the energy allocation is modulated through time to the arms and the stalk. Surface Energy Balance Affects Gas Exchange Of Three Shrub Species, Thayne Montague, Roger Kjelgren, Larry Rupp

We investigated the energy balance of vegetative and nonvegetative surfaces and gas exchange for 3 shrub species growing over each surface. During a 1-week period, incoming short-wave radiation, surface and soil temperature, and soil heat flux for turf and pine-bark mulch surfaces were gathered. Air temperature and relative humidity at 2 heights over each surface were also measured. Mulch surface and air temperatures were warmer and soil temperature below mulch was cooler than turf throughout each day. Relative humidity varied with height above turf, but each height was comparable over mulch. For the majority of each day, soil heat flux …

Mild temperatures were prevalent in the weeks prior to this year's survey; however, temperatures cold enough to form a thin layer of ice on some reservoirs and lakes occurred between aerial surveys. Three of the aerial surveys were conducted on the 6th and 7th of January and one was conducted on the 13th. The survey route that includes the Platte River from Kearney to Plattsmouth and the Loup River was not surveyed this year because of persistent foggy conditions.

Temperatures recorded during the 1998 survey were variable, ranging from 5 to 40 degrees F. The Niobrara River was 50 to …

George M. Sutton's baby bird portraits are his most captivating works. The subjects are isolated against a stark, raw-paper background, and they stare out at the viewer with eyes typically naive but alert. Sutton's artistic mastery of the foot is integral to the underlying biology in these pictures: sturdy and sure against the table for a ruffed grouse, curled inward and near useless for a gallinule on dry land, and almost casually clutching a twig, the hallux resting loosely, for a newly fledged grosbeak. Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has sponsored annual "Christmas bird counts" during the two-week period encompassing Christmas; and as a result, long-term data on winter bird populations have accumulated, especially for some locations. The first two such counts in Nebraska were made in 1909 and in 1912 in Lincoln. While similar counts were made in Omaha from 1909 to 1911, no further counts were conducted elsewhere in the state until the 1940's. The section Scelidites of the subtribe Luperina is diagnosed and described. A key is provided to separate the genera within this section. Cyphotarsis Jacoby is reduced to a junior synonym of Metacoryna Jacoby. Microscelida, new genus, is erected to include Agelastica viridis Jacoby, Luperus subcostatus Jacoby, Luperus subglabratus Jacoby, Scelidopsis violacea Jacoby, and seven newly described species. A key and diagnoses are provided to enable recognition of each species within this new genus. Scelidacne, new genus, is erected to include a single newly described species.

Larvae Of The Three Common North American Species Of Phylocentropus (Trichoptera: Dipseudopsidae), S. K. Sturkie, J. C. Morse

The caddisfly genus Phylocentropus includes 7 extant species globally, of which 5 occur in eastern North America and 2 in eastern Asia. Larvae of the 3 most common North American species [Phylocentropus carolinus Carpenter, P. lucidus (Hagen), and P. placidus (Banks)] were associated with identifiable adults and diagnostic characters are described. Larvae of these 3 species may be distinguished by overall length of mature larvae, head color pattern, and number of spines on the hind tibiae. Larvae of other species of this genus are unknown.

A Review Of Goerita (Trichoptera: Goeridae), With Description Of A New Species, Charles R. Parker

Goerita Ross is restricted to the Appalachian Mountains and Allegheny Plateau of eastern North America. A new species is described, bringing the total in the genus to three. Keys to larvae and adults are presented, and the distributions of the species are recorded.
