The Belfast Agreement, David Trimble Jan 1998

The Belfast Agreement, David Trimble

Fordham International Law Journal

Jim Molyneaux and Ian Paisley, the then unionist leadership, began this process in 1987 when they gave alternative proposals to Tom King, the then Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. The Brooke talks ended in apparent failure in November 1992, but from a unionist perspective, in fact made significant progress. There was a period in 1993 when it appeared that the British government was receptive to unionist urging to implement the "strand one committee report." Despite these doubts, we in the Ulster Unionist Party remained in the talks when Sinn Fein, the political wing of the IRA, was admitted in …

Part I also explores the development of CERD and discusses CERD's standard for proving discrimination based on a showing of racially discriminatory effect. Finally, Part I …

Mimosa 1998, Jacksonville State University

JSU Yearbooks

The JSU Yearbook Collection spans the years from 1926 to the present. The publication began in 1926 as the Teacola (some volumes spelled "Teacoala") and continued under this title through 1933. The yearbook appears to have ceased printing after that year; the student newspaper took the name Teacola (later changed to the Collegian and finally the Chanticleer) and began publication in 1934. The yearbook started up again in 1947 under the name Mimosa. The Library holds all volume years that were printed: 1926-1933, 1947-1950, 1952-present.

Velvet Glove And Iron Fist: A New Paradigm For The Permanent War Crimes Court, David S. Bloch, Elon Weinstein Jan 1998

Velvet Glove And Iron Fist: A New Paradigm For The Permanent War Crimes Court, David S. Bloch, Elon Weinstein

UC Law SF International Law Review

The international community is committed to the creation of a Permanent War Crimes Tribunal. The Tribunal's operating charter will most likely mirror the charters of the Yugoslav and Rwandan International War Crimes Tribunals, a model the authors argue is unsuccessful for several reasons. They believe the Yugoslav and Rwandan tribunals are largely a farce and have become mechanisms for major international war criminals to escape capital punishment.

This article proposes an alternative to the current Permanent War Crimes Tribunal as it is envisioned. The authors' alternative tribunal consists of four independent but interrelated panels: an Indictment Panel, Truth and Reconciliation …

Skillful Women And Jurymen: Gender And Authority In Seventeenth-Century Middlesex County, Massachusetts, Edith Murphy Jan 1998

Skillful Women And Jurymen: Gender And Authority In Seventeenth-Century Middlesex County, Massachusetts, Edith Murphy

Doctoral Dissertations

Through analysis of about one thousand cases that appeared before the Middlesex County, Massachusetts, court between 1649 and 1679, this dissertation asks how authority, derived from patriarchal power, operated on the day-to-day level in colonial New England society. It argues that women were integral to colonial communities and to the effective maintenance of social order. While gender determined the roles people played in colonial society, and women were subordinate to their husbands and fathers, women and men shared agency in efforts to maintain social order.

The dissertation begins by tracing the process by which cases came to the county court, …
