Products: Assessment Resource Kit, Margaret Forster, Geoff N. Masters

Assessment Resource Kit

Products are items which students make, usually in technology and the visual arts. Examples include items of food and clothing, pieces of artwork (drawings, paintings, sculptures) and articles made of wood, metal, plastics and ceramics. Product assessment is the assessment of students' mastery of the processes and tools required to make products (for example, design and production processes) and the assessment of the practical and/ or aesthetic qualities of the items students make. This is a guide to assessing student products in the technology and visual arts curriculum. It is an issue in the Assessment Resource Kit (ARK) magazine series …

The Social Landscape: A Photojournalism Professor's Project, Gerald John Davey Jan 1998

The Social Landscape: A Photojournalism Professor's Project, Gerald John Davey

Communication Faculty Research

Social landscape photography focuses upon aspects of our everyday environment and follows broadly in the tradition of straight, documentary photography. Significant digital manipulation acceptable in fine art photography, advertising, and increasingly in editorial photography, is out of place here. The social landscape photograph attempts to capture and replicate the initial visual experience or insight of the photographer. Such manipulation would undermine, over time, the fundamental believability of the image. On the other hand, the serendipitous nature of the subject matter and the widely varying conditions under which social landscape photographs are produced benefit greatly from the precise contrast control and …

Use Of The Case Study Method To Provide Initial Design Strategies For Daylighting As A Primary Design Determinant In Earth-Integrated Structures, Brian Christain Holm Jan 1998

Use Of The Case Study Method To Provide Initial Design Strategies For Daylighting As A Primary Design Determinant In Earth-Integrated Structures, Brian Christain Holm

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Daylight, a natural energy source in the form of electromagnetic radiation, has been one medium by which one defined and perceived architectural space and form. That was why the creative use of daylight was and continues to be so important in the development of any built environment, especially those which have been integrated into their sites; This study has explored the possibilities of using natural daylight as a primary design determinate to enhance the interior environment of selected earth integrated architectural works. Four commercial institutional projects of various sizes were investigated as case studies to provide insight on the effectiveness …

Dreaming In Black And White: Racial-Sexual Policing In The Birth Of A Nation, The Cheat, And Who Killed Vincent Chin?, Robert S. Chang Jan 1998

Dreaming In Black And White: Racial-Sexual Policing In The Birth Of A Nation, The Cheat, And Who Killed Vincent Chin?, Robert S. Chang

Faculty Articles

Professor Chang observes that Asians are often perceived as interlopers in the nativistic American "family." This conception of a nativist "family" is White in composition and therefore accords a sense of economic and sexual entitlement to Whites, ironically, even if particular beneficiaries are recent immigrants. Transgressions by those perceived to be "illegitimate," such as Asians and Blacks, are policed either by rule of law or the force of sanctioned vigilante violence. Chang illustrates his thesis by drawing upon the three films referenced.

Signal Injection With Perceptual Criteria, T. Engi̇n Tuncer Jan 1998

Signal Injection With Perceptual Criteria, T. Engi̇n Tuncer

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In this paper, a novel method for increasing the coding performance and information transmission capacity is presented. This method is mainly based on perceptual modelling of input signal such as speech or audio. Presented approach may be seen as an alternative to transforms which dynamically change analysis window for better energy compaction. A perceptual model is established in order to obtain a global masking threshold in frequency below which sounds become inaudible. Certain criteria are developed for identifying the signal injection bands. A new multiband filter design method which is a generalization of windowing method is used to separate the …

An Investigation Of The Sculpture/Language Homology, Peter Reginald Pay Jan 1998

An Investigation Of The Sculpture/Language Homology, Peter Reginald Pay

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This research is concerned with the implications of reading sculpture as a mode of communication that is indicative of an art/language homology. An investigation of the inter-relationship of the functions of ‘Language’ and 'Conventions of Visual Communication' is viewed against contemporary redefinitions of the role of sculpture, its character of presentation and mode of engagement with respondents. Theoretical investigation examines models of communication and identifies corresponding systems in an art that is exemplified by the sculpture of Tony Cragg. Cragg's significantly organised collections of commonplace objects, presenting the visual assertiveness of the 'ready-made' prompt a reconsideration of the object as …

Information Vs. Commercialization: The Internet And Unsolicited Electronic Mail, Karin Mika

Richmond Journal of Law & Technology

In November of 1996, the District Court of Eastern Pennsylvania allowed America Online to prohibit a business from using the Internet for sending bulk, unsolicited electronic mail.[1] The decision highlighted some intriguing issues related to how the Internet interacts with the current legal framework and how legal standards that have adequately encompassed most business uses for emerging technologies are not a perfect fit for issues related to the Internet. This article will focus on the current struggle to fit the Internet into some type of existing legal framework, especially with respect to Internet business uses. It will focus primarily on …

Behaviour Of Gilbert's Potoroo (Potorous Gilbertii Gould) In Captivity, Kylie Dijon Burke

Theses : Honours

In late 1994, Gilbert's Potoroo was rediscovered almost 120 years after it was believed to have become extinct. It was found at Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve, near Albany, Western Australia. Since then, it has become urgent that detailed studies of the potoroo's behaviour and ecology be undertaken, so as to increase the understanding of the needs of 'this critically endangered marsupial. Due to its critical status, increasing the number of animals is of paramount importance to the continued survival of this species. An understanding of the behavioural repertoire of the species will aid in its recovery and provide the …

The Mental Approach To The Game Of Baseball: A Handbook For The Player/Coach, Timothy P. Nihart Jan 1998

The Mental Approach To The Game Of Baseball: A Handbook For The Player/Coach, Timothy P. Nihart

Theses

This thesis will focus on the mental attitude required to succeed in athletics, in particular baseball. Stressing the link between the mind and the body, this paper intends to make practical applications for both coaches and players.

Research as shown that in communication information is transmitted through two primary inconsistent and unbalanced methods: content and emotions . Due to the often interaction of coaches in communicating with their players, there is a large margin of error, lost information, from the transmission by the coaches to the reception by the players. It 1s necessary, thus, to explore the link between the …

Painting And Being: A Meditation On Perception, Myron N. Moore Jan 1998

Painting And Being: A Meditation On Perception, Myron N. Moore

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

The art of painting, as I practice it, is analogous to reevaluating tradition: the purpose being not to determine what is new but to determine anew what is truly relevant. The history of art affects my perception and that which I see celebrates what I find relevant to the present. I have always worked from direct observation. In an art climate that has moved toward conceptual concerns, my response is to explore the perceptual paradigm of western art, without invalidating its tradition. My paintings are a direct response to my environment. In making such work I communicate the significance of …

A National Survey Of Core Course Requirements, Department Names, And Undergraduate Program Titles In Communication, Corwin P. King Jan 1998

A National Survey Of Core Course Requirements, Department Names, And Undergraduate Program Titles In Communication, Corwin P. King

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article presents a survey which assessed the typical number of core courses college departments have, the most commonly used ones, and, in a general way, their contents. The article also provides data on department names and undergraduate program areas for a picture of the communication discipline in the 1990s. First, with regard to core course requirements, the following observations are noted: Though a majority of departments now have some type of core course requirement, a strong minority don't. Departments that have a core typically have a small one. There is a good deal of variation in cores, but one …

Examination Of Botanical Substructures As Symbolic Communication: The Carved Stone Monuments Of The Cotzumalguapa Nuclear Zone, Guatemala, Debora Claire Kerr Jan 1998

Examination Of Botanical Substructures As Symbolic Communication: The Carved Stone Monuments Of The Cotzumalguapa Nuclear Zone, Guatemala, Debora Claire Kerr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The Cotzumalguapa Nuclear Zone is located on the Pacific slope of Guatemala. A portion of the carved stone monuments associated with this zone exhibits a unique combination of botanical symbols as a concomitant to central portrait figuration. This botanical style, found elsewhere in Mesoamerica, includes leaf, flower, fruit, and complex tabbed speech scroll/vine motifs intertwined with other non-botanical symbols. The resulting style can be interpreted as an "envisioned form" of symbolic communication. This thesis examines, isolates and quantifies the botanical elements, their placement and suggests comparisons with plant species known to facilitate altered state spiritual communication.

Interlaced Pixel Delta Codec: For Transmission Of Video On Low Bit Rate Communication Lines, Joseph Jr Celi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999

The Interlaced Pixel Delta (IPD) Video Codec is a real time video compression and decompression engine. It is specifically designed to be used for video phone or video conferencing applications that are to be run under very low bandwidth networking conditions. The example network used throughout this dissertation is the Internet where users are typically connected at transmission speeds of 33.3 K bits per second or less. In order to accomplish this goal, the IPD codec must achieve very high compression ratios. This feat is further complicated by the fact that the IPD codec is to be fully realized using …
