The Doing More With Agriculture project is an initiative of Monty House, Minister for Primary Industry; Fisheries, designed to foster innovative approaches to diversification in agriculture and small town survival and revival within rural Western Australia. The project came about in response to concerns about issues such as declining rural populations and lack of employment opportunities for young people and what actions could be taken to reverse these trends.
Community Organizing And Comprehensive Community Initiatives, Mark Joseph, Renae Ogletree
Community Organizing And Comprehensive Community Initiatives, Mark Joseph, Renae Ogletree
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
In order for comprehensive community initiatives (CCIs) to be sustained beyond their initial funding period, they must "take hold" in a community and develop the capacity of community members to control and guide the community-building process. Given that CCIs are usually formulated largely by sources external to the community, such as private foundations and government agencies, it can be difficult for CCIs to achieve the necessary level of local participation. Furthermore, conflicts over the dynamic of power within the CCI, and differences over internal versus external interest, can make interaction between external agents and community members problematic. The author suggests …
Flexibility In The Law: Reengineering Of Zoning To Prevent Fragmented Landscapes, John R. Nolon
Flexibility In The Law: Reengineering Of Zoning To Prevent Fragmented Landscapes, John R. Nolon
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
The continued existence vernal pools and other sensitive environmental areas greatly depends upon local and state land use decisions. Practices such as Euclidian Zoning, where land uses are separated into different districts, usually fail to account for the protection of these sensitive areas. However, local governments in New York, using implied municipal power created by state legislation, have a variety of land use tools to help alleviate the destruction of environmentally sensitive areas. These tools include: overlay zoning, incentive zoning, conservation easements, floating zones, and transferring development rights. By using these tools within a well-integrated strategy, New York communities can …

Transit-Oriented Development Suitability Analysis By The Analytic Hierarchy Process And A Geographic Information System: A Prototype Procedure, Reza Banai
Journal of Public Transportation
A prototype procedure is illustrated to assess the suitability of land use around proposed light rail transit stations of a metropolitan area, with an example of a focus on one station area land use pattern. Transit oriented development (TOD) guidelines provide the criteria for an assessment. The procedure for assessment is facilitated by a geographic information system (GIS), and the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), a multicriteria methodology that is increasingly employed in conjunction with geographic information systems. The weights of the criteria are determined through paired comparisons (relative measurement), and a ratings intensity scale is used to determine the scores …

The Myth Of Everglades Settlement, Alfred R. Light
The Myth Of Everglades Settlement, Alfred R. Light
St. Thomas Law Review
To "settle" has a number of senses within the English language. For example, it can mean "to make a decision on; determine; decide," or "to come to a conclusion," as when children bring their disputes to their mother to settle.' It can mean "to agree upon (as a time, place, or plan); fix beforehand," as in to settle on a course of action. It can mean "to put in order; arrange," as in one must settle all his affairs before going away for the winter. It can mean "to pay; arrange payment of," as in one must also settle up …

Dangerous Crossing: State Brownfields Recycling And Federal Enterprise Zoning, Michael Allan Wolf
Law Faculty Publications
Urban policymakers over the past two decades have engineered a curious and potentially dangerous intersection of late 20th Century policies designed to foster the rebirth of America's distressed urban regions. First, we find widespread enthusiasm about the potential for reusing brownfields 1 (typically contaminated urban sites), which has stimulated an impressive range of initiatives at all levels of government. 2 Second, after more than a decade of sitting on the sidelines and watching the states battle over the ideal range of incentives that will most effectively drive inner-city redevelopment, the federal government finally entered the fray in the 1990s with …
Community Service And Political Identity Development In Adolescence, Miranda Yates, James Youniss
Community Service And Political Identity Development In Adolescence, Miranda Yates, James Youniss
Civic Engagement
This article addresses the interconnection of political socialization and identity development. We begin with Erikson 's work, which identified the development of political commitment in adolescence as a key aspect of identity formation. We then seek to shed light on the social processes through which youth become engaged in political activities and issues. We discuss the influences of family and peers as well as participation in community service and other civic activities. The development of social responsibility and agency, and an understanding of the complexity of social issues are considered as important facets of political commitment. Data from a case …

Strengthening The Utilization Of Family Planning Operations Research: Findings From Case Studies In Africa, Julie Solo, Annamaria Cerulli, Robert A. Miller, Ian Askew, Elizabeth Pearlman
Reproductive Health
The goal of undertaking operations research (OR) on family planning (FP) and reproductive health (RH) services is to strengthen the ability of programs and policies to maximize access to and quality of these services. This report addresses the need for a greater understanding of how information from OR studies is utilized. The Africa OR/TA Project II undertook a study to assess the extent to which information from OR studies conducted under the Africa OR/TA Project I (1988–1993) was utilized. The study also examined the factors influencing how study results were utilized. Case studies of several OR projects were undertaken to …

Partnerships/Community
Health services delivery is increasingly shifting to community-based settings. The competencies required of future health professionals require a shift in their educational preparation. Service leaning is suggested as an educational method with the potential to reform health professions education in tandem with the changes occurring in the health services delivery. The Health Professions Schools in Service to the Nation Program (HPSISN), a US demonstration project of service learning in the health professions, examines the impact of service leaning on students, faculty, communities and institutions across a wide array of universities and community settings. This paper describes the evaluation of the …
