Methods Of Evaluating Student Performance Through Service Learning, Kathleen Davis, M. David Miller, Wellesley T. Corbett Aug 1998

Methods Of Evaluating Student Performance Through Service Learning, Kathleen Davis, M. David Miller, Wellesley T. Corbett

Evaluation/Reflection

Service learning* includes a myriad of activities that are currently being implemented at all levels within school settings. But while thousands of service-learning projects involve over one million K-12 students nationwide, measurement alternatives for assessing their impact on students and programs are sparse. The purpose of this document is to try to outline some approaches that might be used in examining the effectiveness of service-learning activities. Effectiveness can include cognitive, behavioral, or affective measures. In addition, effectiveness can be measured for students, classes, or programs. Each of these areas of measurement and units being examined could potentially be measured by …

Extension Outreach Opportunities Among Segmented Dairy Producers, Robert L. Parsons, Gregory D. Hanson, Ae Luloff, Jr Winsten Aug 1998

Extension Outreach Opportunities Among Segmented Dairy Producers, Robert L. Parsons, Gregory D. Hanson, Ae Luloff, Jr Winsten

Journal of Extension

A survey of 874 dairy farms indicates challenges for Extension educators to address differentiated needs of dairy farmers. Confinement producers will focus on educational issues relating to larger farm and herd size, and higher milk production, to stay competitive. Intensive grazing producers, being somewhat younger, more highly educated, and having recently adopted new technology, are likely to innovate and incorporate formal planning processes to improve grazing performance. Farmers using traditional production techniques present a unique challenge because they are likely to shift toward specialized confinement of grazing systems to improve competitiveness. The low indebtedness of traditional producers is conducive to …

Perceptions Of Corporate Crime: Assessing The Seriousness, Dale J. Ardovini-Brooker Aug 1998

Perceptions Of Corporate Crime: Assessing The Seriousness, Dale J. Ardovini-Brooker

Masters Theses

Many studies have been done concerning the seriousness of traditional street crime. There is a need in the field of criminology to expand our knowledge about how serious corporate crimes are. A key feature of seriousness is how researchers measure it. Using a survey, I analyzed people's perceptions of corporate crime. I had the respondents indicate the seriousness of the crime and harm by using a Likert Scale as well as identifying the appropriate sanction/sentence for the company convicted of the crime. This proved useful in attempting to identify how seriousness is measured by the sanctions/sentences imposed by the respondents. …

Cardiac Rehabilitation: Gender Differences In Factors Influencing Participation, Lani Lieberman, Marta Meana, Donna E. Stewart Aug 1998

Cardiac Rehabilitation: Gender Differences In Factors Influencing Participation, Lani Lieberman, Marta Meana, Donna E. Stewart

Psychology Faculty Research

This study investigates gender differences in the barriers and incentives that are most influential in the coronary patient's decision to participate in cardiac rehabilitation (CRPs) and suggests strategies to counter these barriers. Patient surveys were administered to consecutive English-speaking attenders and referred nonattenders to a cardiac rehabilitation center at a university healthcare system in Toronto, Canada. A survey questionnaire, constructed from a literature review and advice from key informants, examined potential factors affecting decisions to engage in CRPs. One129 attenders at a CRP and 61 referred nonattenders completed the questionnaire. Physician recommendation was reported to be the most important factor …

What Is School For? Dilemmas Of Secondary Education In Bush Alaska, Lawrence C. Hamilton Aug 1998

What Is School For? Dilemmas Of Secondary Education In Bush Alaska, Lawrence C. Hamilton

Faculty Publications

The remote towns and villages of bush Alaska confront dilemmas in the design of secondary education. Systems based on a single statewide boarding school, or alternatively on small schools in each individual community, have both been tried. Debates about these two approaches reflect a more basic question: What is the purpose of secondary education? Should it (A) prepare students to become functional members of their home communities, or (B) prepare them to compete for education and jobs elsewhere? This question has implications for all aspects of educational design, and indeed for the future of rural villages themselves.

A paper presented …

The Relationship Between Organizational Culture And The Practice Of Program Evaluation In Human Service Organizations, Lorraine Marais Aug 1998

The Relationship Between Organizational Culture And The Practice Of Program Evaluation In Human Service Organizations, Lorraine Marais

Dissertations

There are many obstacles for human service organizations in evaluating programs. Some of these barriers are the difficulty in defining human behavior and the change that needs to be evaluated, human service programs that take a long time to show results, agency capacity to do evaluation, and cost (Young, Hollister, Hodgkinson, & Associates, 1993). Another subtle yet powerful influence on the practice of evaluation in nonprofit organizations may be organizational culture (Schein, 1990). If an organization is going to employ self-evaluation, an organizational culture may be needed that will support such efforts. This study was designed to assess the relationship …

Meaning In Family Mealtime, Ardyth Gunnell Cannon Aug 1998

Meaning In Family Mealtime, Ardyth Gunnell Cannon

Theses and Dissertations

This project asks families what mealtime together means to them. The topic of family mealtime appears comparatively infrequently in academic literature, and any meaning that families associate with mealtime has seldom been studied directly. This particular research investigates meanings of the understudied mealtime event by interviewing three or four generations of family members from five different families. Attention is paid to emerging standards of rigor for qualitative research, namely applicability through the selection of families who have a history of practicing a family mealtime tradition, truth value in faithfully representing the interviewees perceptions, and auditability by including detail of the …

Locating Traitorous Identities: Toward A View Of Privilege-Cognizant White Character, Alison Bailey Aug 1998

Locating Traitorous Identities: Toward A View Of Privilege-Cognizant White Character, Alison Bailey

Faculty Publications - Philosophy

I address the problem of how to locate “traitorous” subjects, or those who belong to dominant groups yet resist the usual assumptions and practices of those groups. I argue that Sandra Harding’s description of traitors us insiders, who “become marginal” is misleading. Crafting a distinction between “privilege-cognizant” and “privilege-evasive” white scripts, I offer an alternative account of race traitors as privilege-cognizant whites who refuse to animate expected whitely scripts, and who are unfaithful to worldviews whites are expected to hold.

From Knowledge Extended To Knowledge Created: Challenges For A New Extension Paradigm, Mildred E. Warner, Clare Hinrichs, Judith Schneyer, Lucy Joyce

Journal of Extension

Traditionally the practice of Extension has been described as "knowledge applied" or "knowledge extended." More recently, the research community has begun to recognize Extension's role in creating knowledge. Beyond Extension's contribution in setting agendas for future research, this movement recognizes Extension's capacity to participate as a full partner in the research process. This article critically assesses a research collaboration in New York where Extension agents were full research partners. The unique challenges for both the research and Extension partners are articulated and discussed.

Technological Issues For Improving Access To Internet Web Sites For Rural Users, Scott A. Samson Aug 1998

Technological Issues For Improving Access To Internet Web Sites For Rural Users, Scott A. Samson

Journal of Extension

Internet web site developers can improve accessibility to their sites by rural clients through awareness of technological challenges encountered by their potential market. Some rural users, especially those in impoverished areas, face problems with reliability of telephone services and dated computer technology. These technological issues can have an impact on the effective use of the web as a mechanism for data and information delivery. Web site developers can accommodate some of these limitations through simple web page design and less reliance upon relatively more advanced web programming languages such as ActiveX and JAVA.
