Rethinking Rewards: Rewarding A And Hoping For B!, Abhoy K Ojha Oct 1998

Rethinking Rewards: Rewarding A And Hoping For B!, Abhoy K Ojha

IIMB Management Review

It would seem to be well established wisdom that if a particular behaviour is desired, that should be rewarded rather than any other behaviour. Based on a case study of two hospitals in a Canadian province, Abhoy Ojha concludes that in situations where it may not be practical to reward the desired behaviour, a related behaviour could be rewarded in order to elicit the behaviour desired. An adequate understanding of the complex relationship between rewards and behaviour may allow organisations to design systems that are seen to encourage one behaviour, but also elicit multiple other desirable behaviours.

Political Research In Martial Law Poland, David S. Mason

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In early 1981, at the height of the Solidarity revolution, I was accepted by lREX to spend the spring 1982 semester in Warsaw for my project on the development of the workers' movement and the formation of Solidarity. My family and I were to fly to Poland just after Christmas of 1981. But on December 13, martial law was declared, and the Polish borders were sealed. I had taken a leave of absence from Butler University, and we had already rented out our house, so we were stranded.

Review Of Cahokia: Domination And Ideology In The Mississippian World Edited By Timothy R. Pauketat And Thomas E. Emerson, Alan J. Osborn Oct 1998

Review Of Cahokia: Domination And Ideology In The Mississippian World Edited By Timothy R. Pauketat And Thomas E. Emerson, Alan J. Osborn

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Cahokia is a spectacular eleventh- to twelfth-century village and earth mound complex near the confluence of the Missouri and the Mississippi rivers east of present day St. Louis. This prehistoric community may have supported 10,000 inhabitants and was part of an even larger array of settlements, platform and burial mounds, and cemeteries that stretched across 86,000 acres of fertile flood plains (the American Bottoms). Extensive archaeological work associated with highway construction in the 1970s and 1980s provided rich, diverse evidence for day-to-day domestic activities, as well as regional trade, immense corvee labor projects (e.g., platform mounds, "woodhenges," and palisades), military …

Depression And The Long-Term Risk Of Pain, Fatigue, And Disability In Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis, Judith Fifield, Howard Tennen, Susan Reisine, Julia Mcquillan

Bureau of Sociological Research: Faculty Publications

Objective. To determine whether a previous episode of major depression leaves a “scar” that places previously depressed patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) at risk for experiencing high levels of pain, fatigue, and disability.

Methods. A cohort of 203 patients with RA was randomly selected from a national panel and interviewed by phone about pain, fatigue, depressive symptoms, disability, and history of major depression.

Results. Excluding patients who met the criteria for current major depression, patients with both a history of depression and many depressive symptoms at the time of the interview (dysphoria) reported more pain than those without current dysphoria, …

Nebraska’S Changing Agriculture: Perceptions About The Swine Industry, John C. Allen, Rebecca Filkins, Sam Cordes, Eric Jarecki

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

The livestock industry has been restructuring during the past several decades, resulting in fewer and larger farms as well as some vertical integration. One particular livestock sector, hogs, has received much attention in Nebraska during the past year. An increase in the applications for new hog confinement facilities has caused concern for some rural residents. Some are worried about environmental damage, while others are concerned about economic implications for smaller farms. However, supporters of these facilities point to additional jobs and other economic benefits they can bring to a community. Given these issues, how do rural Nebraskans feel about large-scale …

FOCUS on Boise State

Idaho politics reflect both tradition and change as the state hurtles toward a new century and new challenges. In this issue of FOCUS, we explore some of the issues that are shaping state government, from term limits and reapportionment to the growing influence of women lawmakers and the impact of the religious right. We also profile four politicos who have made their voices heard in the state and look at voter turnout and other state trends. Cover courtesy Hummel Architects.

"However, it is not the purpose of this article to map the shifting trajectories of these debates except to note one general question central to the thesis of this paper that has emerged from these debates: Given current structural and conjunctural conditions such as the capitalization of global culture, the privatization of subjectivity, free market fundamentalism, and the moral collapse of social democracy after the defeat of communism, should the role ofGramsci's "organic" intellectual primarily be restricted to practicing "cultural politics" or should the Gramscian agent challenge in a more direct manner the pernicious power of capital?"
