Compassionate Fire: Women's Stories Of Subjective And Social Change, Norma Jean Profitt Jan 1998

Compassionate Fire: Women's Stories Of Subjective And Social Change, Norma Jean Profitt

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Feminist social work literature has focused on the provision of educational groups for women who have been abused but has overlooked the question of women’s movement from individual survival to collective resistance. This qualitative study explores the processes through which survivors of abuse by male partners become involved in collective action to combat violence against women. Using story telling and testimonio as a research method, the author interviewed 11 women about the factors, insights, events, and processes that inspired them to join with other women to confront violence against women. The author found that women’s movement from individual survival to …

Twenty Years Old, Arnold N. Bodtker Jan 1998

Twenty Years Old, Arnold N. Bodtker

The Bridge

It was 20 years ago thst the Danish American Heritage Society (DAHS) came upon the scene. I used the term " came upon the scene" advisedly. Reflecting on the circumstances and discussions that led to the formation of the Society makes the term seem appropriate. It had been noted from time to time in the decases before that when Scandinavian American historians and writers assembled and the role of the Scandinavian immigrant was considered, The Danish Americans were conspicuous by their absence. In contrast, the Norwegian American Historical Association was formed in 1925, and has had a distinguished existence since then. …

The Effects Of Systematically Fading Reinforcement While Maintaining Skills, Jodi Suzanne Bronson Jan 1998

The Effects Of Systematically Fading Reinforcement While Maintaining Skills, Jodi Suzanne Bronson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

A review of the literature describing treatment programs for young children with autism revealed two distinctly different strategies. One, the Lovaas approach (Lovaas, 1987), focused on an intense, one-on-one discrete trial training format implemented for approximately 40 hours per week. A prescribed curriculum targeted at social and communication skills is incorporated. The second program, TEACCH, emphasized an individualized curriculum selected after a careful assessment process to determine a person's strengths and limitations. Goals and objectives were subsequently implemented in highly structured special education classrooms where the focus was on antecedent control and the use of visually mediated strategies. Interviews with …

Recycling Economic Development: Observing The Wage And Occupational Structure Of The Plastics Industry, Dawn Marie Dungan Jan 1998

Recycling Economic Development: Observing The Wage And Occupational Structure Of The Plastics Industry, Dawn Marie Dungan

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This thesis provides an exploratory analysis of the occupational and wage structures of a predefined set of plastics companies in Iowa. Characteristics of the occupational and wage structures of recycling and nonrecycling based companies in the plastics industry in Iowa were compared to a standard established by the 1992 Iowa Statewide Wage Survey. The theory of the diminishing middle was used as the guiding framework from which to draw assumptions. The plastics industry was defined as all companies in the state of Iowa engaging in any combination of collection, processing, or manufacturing of recycled or raw plastic products for economic …

Essential Speech: Why Corporate Speech Is Not Free, Daniel J.H. Greenwood Jan 1998

Essential Speech: Why Corporate Speech Is Not Free, Daniel J.H. Greenwood

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

In a democracy, the citizens are the only legitimate sources of law. It follows inexorably that corporations, not being citizens, cannot be legitimate political actors.

The problem of corporate speech is further complicated by the internal rules of corporate governance. When corporations "speak," they do so by decision of their managers, who are constrained by fiduciary duties and economic pressure of the stock market to advocate for a single value: maximum profit for shares. In a multifaceted culture of manifold and various values, it is inevitable that the pursuit of profit, valuable as it is, will conflict with other important …

Domestic Political Violence: Working Towards An Answer To A Timeless Question, John Gutowski '98 Jan 1998

Domestic Political Violence: Working Towards An Answer To A Timeless Question, John Gutowski '98

Honors Projects

This paper compares two of the more prominent theories that explain the causes of domestic political violence: the older more established relative deprivation theory, and the much newer rational action theory. Deprivation theory remains the most prominent theory in the field, but rational action theory presents a formidable challenge. The following section places these two theories in the broader literature on domestic political violence. The next section presents the research design, including the operationalization, measurement, and specification of the models. The final section presents the analysis and conclusions from the models.

Patient Advocates Or Patient Adversaries? Using Fiduciary Law To Compel Disclosure Of Managed Care Financial Incentives, Kim Johnston Jan 1998

Patient Advocates Or Patient Adversaries? Using Fiduciary Law To Compel Disclosure Of Managed Care Financial Incentives, Kim Johnston

San Diego Law Review

This Article advocates disclosure as a compromise between wholeheartedly embracing financial incentives and flatly prohibiting them, and suggests using fiduciary law to compel such disclosure. This Article also argues that courts should recognize a cause of action for breach of fiduciary duty when a physician fails to disclose managed care financial incentives to her patients. Part I gives a brief overview of fiduciary law and fiduciary duties. Part II examines the fiduciary nature of the physician-patient relationship and looks at court cases that have characterized the physician-patient relationship as a fiduciary relationship. Part Ill discusses the only two published opinions …

The Relationship Between The Intensity And Duration Of Extracurricular Activities And Teenage Pregnancy, Rhonda L. Drilling Jan 1998

The Relationship Between The Intensity And Duration Of Extracurricular Activities And Teenage Pregnancy, Rhonda L. Drilling

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Extensive research has been done in the area of adolescent pregnancy prevention. One possible means of prevention that has not been adequately explored is involvement in extracurricular school activities. The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between the intensity and duration of participation in extracurricular school activities and the incidence of teenage pregnancy. In the study, 200 female high school students who had never been pregnant and 36 females who had become pregnant as teenagers were surveyed. All females were from Fayette County, Iowa. A 33-item questionnaire was used to survey the two groups regarding …

Gender, Gender Role Socialization, And The Tripartite Model Of Anxiety And Depression In Male And Female College Students, Sarina E. Abel Jan 1998

Gender, Gender Role Socialization, And The Tripartite Model Of Anxiety And Depression In Male And Female College Students, Sarina E. Abel

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study, including 141 female and 71 male college students, investigated the relationship of gender and gender role socialization within the context of the tripartite model of anxiety and depression. Hierarchical regression analyses indicated that gender contributed significantly to the prediction of specific depression and mixed anxiety-depression, but not to the prediction of specific anxiety. Gender role contributed to the prediction of specific depression, but did not uniquely contribute to the prediction of specific anxiety or mixed anxiety-depression. Significant multivariate effects were found for gender role and for the interaction of gender and gender role, but not for gender. Univariate …

Piezoelectric Biomechanical Assessment Of Swallowing Across Ages And Swallowing Task, Janel Elizabeth Crow Jan 1998

Piezoelectric Biomechanical Assessment Of Swallowing Across Ages And Swallowing Task, Janel Elizabeth Crow

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Even though the Modified Barium Swallow (l\1BS) is the gold standard for the evaluation of swallowing disorders, the MBS has several limitations ( e.g., invasiveness, cost and portability). Noninvasive tools to measure swallowing ability at low cost and with low risk to the patient are desirable. Recently, thin film, piezoelectric technology (Computerized Laryngeal Analyzer: CLA) has become available which allows for noninvasive biomechanical analysis of swallowing. Noninvasive biomechanical measurement of swallowing is possible due to the close correlation of hyolaryngeal movement, airway protection and upper esophageal sphincter (UES) opening (Jacob, Kahrilas, Logemann, Shah, & Ha, 1989). The vertical and anterior …

Evaluating Information Modeling Methods – A Review, Keng Siau, M. Rossi Jan 1998

Evaluating Information Modeling Methods – A Review, Keng Siau, M. Rossi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hundreds of modeling methods are in existence today, yet practitioners and researchers are zealously “producing” new modeling methods. The “blooming” of modeling methods is not the problem; the lack of standardized techniques for evaluating them is. To further complicate the matter, most of the modeling methods are introduced based on common sense and intuition. Theoretical foundations and empirical evidence are severely lacking. With the current state of affairs, evaluation of modeling methods has become necessary. Comparing modeling methods provides us with the necessary knowledge and understanding on the strengths and weaknesses of each method. This knowledge can also guide us …

Utopia In Iowa?: Etienne Cabet And The Icarian Concept Of Progress, John Davis Higdon Jan 1998

Utopia In Iowa?: Etienne Cabet And The Icarian Concept Of Progress, John Davis Higdon

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Nineteenth century America was a period of transition. Reform movements paralleled and sometimes replaced politics as idealistic people worked for a cornucopia of social causes. Believing man capable of finding a universally correct lifestyle, numerous activists designed communities to guide the world to peace and prosperity. One of these groups, the Icarians, following the teachings of their founder Etienne Cabet, built several utopian hamlets in the United States and existed for over half a century. Their longevity can be primarily accredited to their espousal of the philosophical doctrine of Progress. An examination of the Icarian's history shows that a quasi-religious …

Gangs, Drugs, And Delinquency, Tina Renea Engstrom Jan 1998

Gangs, Drugs, And Delinquency, Tina Renea Engstrom

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The main objective of this thesis is to study the link between gangs, drug use, and delinquency. Previous literature suggests that social learning and social control theories commonly provide theoretical contexts for explaining deviant behavior. The present research applies the principles of Sutherland's (1949) theory of differential association and Hirschi' s (1969) theory of social control to the delinquent behavior of gang members and their drug involvement. The present study does not attempt to explain why youths become gang members. Rather, this research uses an integration of social learning and social control theories to explain why gang members become involved …

The Social History Of A Moral Vision : A Qualitative Study Of The Ulster Project In Decorah, Iowa, Mark Murray Mccrory Jan 1998

The Social History Of A Moral Vision : A Qualitative Study Of The Ulster Project In Decorah, Iowa, Mark Murray Mccrory

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the beliefs, feelings, and experiences of 10 people involved with the Ulster Project in Decorah, Iowa. In addition, the study sought to assess the merits and consequences of the Project and to evaluate the validity of the contact hypothesis. The Ulster Project is a non-profit organization, which sponsors an ecumenical summer visit of Northern Irish youth to the United States. By exposing its visitors to people of the opposite religion, the Project's long range goal is to heal the many scars which have been built up through years of violence and …

Child Sexual Abuse In Ireland: An Historical And Anthropological Note, Kevin Lalor Jan 1998

Child Sexual Abuse In Ireland: An Historical And Anthropological Note, Kevin Lalor

Articles

Child sexual abuse in Ireland has entered the public domain only in the last twenty years. This process was accelerated by a number of high profile cases which became public in the mid 1990s. Prior to the recent past, few references to child sexual abuse in Ireland exist. The first written evidence is found in the Penitentials of the early Christian period. Penance is specified for those that “misuse” children. Mention of adult child sexual relations is also found in the Brehon law texts. Historians, sociologists and anthropologists of childhood suggest that patterns of child rearing vary across time and …

An Art Therapy Programme Incorporating Buddhist Concepts To Address Issues Of Aggression In Adult Male Prisoners, Diane Randall Jan 1998

An Art Therapy Programme Incorporating Buddhist Concepts To Address Issues Of Aggression In Adult Male Prisoners, Diane Randall

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis has researched and designed a programme that offers an alternative way of working with aggression in a male prison population, using an art therapy approach that incorporates Buddhist concepts as an intervention. Buddhist practices have traditionally been used in Eastern cultures to calm the mind and to develop compassion as an antidote to aggression. Therefore these practices have seen used as a basis for the design of exercises in the programme. The purpose of the programme is to offer an intervention that will complement, support, or be an alternative to existing treatments, which are primarily cognitive-behavioural in orientation. …

Industrial Development In Indonesia, Development For Whom?: A Case Study Of Women Who Work In Factories In Rural West Java, Peter J. Hancock

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This research was conducted in order to address two major research questions: 1) To what extent and in what ways are a cohort of female factory workers in Sundanese West Java influential in the cultural, social and economic development of the geographic area in which they live and more specifically within their own households? 2) To what extent does the Indonesian state support or inhibit such development? In order to answer these and other secondary research questions I conducted qualitative and quantitative research. I used a theoretical framework which directed the methodology, questionnaires and both qualitative and quantitative data was …

The Participant's Perception Of The Contribution Of Lyengar Yoga To Their Health And Well-Being, Ann Dragon Jan 1998

The Participant's Perception Of The Contribution Of Lyengar Yoga To Their Health And Well-Being, Ann Dragon

Theses : Honours

To date little research has been conducted to substantiate the many anecdotal claims that yoga improves both physical and mental health. Berger and Owen (1992) demonstrated that yoga practice could enhance mood state. Mind-body exercise modalities, such as tai chi and yoga, potentially offer significant benefit in the areas of exercise rehabilitation and health promotion strategy (LaForge, 1997). Yoga is steadily gaining popularity amongst western culture with an increasing number of people participating in this mind-body exercise modality. Investigating the perceived contribution of regular yoga practice to health and well-being could uncover a number of positive 'indicators towards exercise adherence …

Women On The Move: A Qualitative Study Of Relocation To A Remote Area, Ann Jones Jan 1998

Women On The Move: A Qualitative Study Of Relocation To A Remote Area, Ann Jones

Theses : Honours

This study uses a feminist framework to explore women's experiences of relocating from a city or large regional centre to a small and isolated town. It comes in response to my personal and professional experience of remote relocation and to the dearth of feminist discussion in this area. The site of the study is a town of 2,500 people, situated in Northern Australia over 1200 kilometres from the nearest capital city and 800 kilometres from the nearest regional centre. Six women who relocated within the previous 18 months participated in the study. Two of the women were single and four …

A Cave Of Their Own: A Comparative Examination Of Recurring Social And Psychological Themes In Gothic Fiction And Gothic Youth Subculture Through The Song Lyrics And Fiction Of Nick Cave, Bradley M. Hunter

Theses : Honours

The aim of this thesis is to examine the Gothic phenomenon as it pertains to late eighteenth and early nineteenth-century fiction, and extrapolate its social and psychological concerns as they relate to the Gothic revival in the late nineteenth-century Decadent movement and late twentieth-century gothic subculture. This examination focuses on recurrent social and psychological themes in eighteenth/nineteenth-century Gothic fiction, the late nineteenth-century Decadent movement and twentieth-century gothic music and subculture, which, in turn, are compared to the themes and motifs of the song lyrics and fiction of Nick Cave. Within this context, the recurring theme of the psychological exploration of …

Behavioural Contexts For The Expression Of Modern Racism: The Simulated Juror Paradigm, Murray Riggs Jan 1998

Behavioural Contexts For The Expression Of Modern Racism: The Simulated Juror Paradigm, Murray Riggs

Theses : Honours

The central tenet of modem racism theory is that, although overt prejudice seems to have declined, subtle forms of prejudice are still pervasive. The theory predicts that members of a majority racial group will discriminate against members of a minority racial group only when they feel that they can do so without appearing to be prejudiced. Thus, the occurrence of discrimination depends upon the nature of the behavioural context. The purpose of the present study was to explore the implications of modern racism theory in the behavioural domain by employing the simulated juror paradigm. The participants, 338 randomly selected residents …
