A Framework For Understanding Social Science Contributions To Ecosystem Management, Joanna Endter-Wada, Dale Blahna, Richard Krannich, Mark W. Brunson Jan 1998

A Framework For Understanding Social Science Contributions To Ecosystem Management, Joanna Endter-Wada, Dale Blahna, Richard Krannich, Mark W. Brunson

Environment and Society Faculty Publications

We propose a framework for understanding the role that the social sciences should play in ecosystem management. Most of the ecosystem management literature assumes that scientific understanding of ecosystems is solely the purview of natural scientists. While the evolving principles of ecosystem management recognize that people play an important role, social considerations are usually limited to political and decision-making processes and to development of environmental education. This view is incomplete. The social science aspect of ecosystem management has two distinct components: one that concerns greater public involvement in the ecosystem management decision-making process, and one that concerns integrating social considerations …

Creating The 'Right' Impression: Towards A Dramaturgy Of Management Consultancy, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Graeme Salaman Jan 1998

Creating The 'Right' Impression: Towards A Dramaturgy Of Management Consultancy, Timothy Adrian Robert Clark, Graeme Salaman

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This article adopts a novel approach by examining the activities of management consultants in terms of the dramaturgical metaphor. This is a useful framework within which to illuminate their activities since a number of service characteristics combine to create a context within which the key task of management consultants is to convince clients of their quality and value. Impression management is therefore a core feature of consultancy work. In this sense management consultants are viewed as systems of persuasion creating compelling images which persuade clients of their quality and worth. This argument is illustrated with reference to the activities of …

The Media's Influence On Welfare Recipients' Self Perceptions, Candice L. Ludlow Jan 1998

The Media's Influence On Welfare Recipients' Self Perceptions, Candice L. Ludlow

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This is a two-fold study of the media's influence on welfare recipients' self perceptions. The research focuses on how news stories about welfare effect women who receive Aid to Families with Dependent Children. It is my contention that welfare recipients have increasingly been scapegoated through the media by politicians and policymakers for the economic woes of this country. Welfare recipients are also blamed for their economic position in society. Historically, the discourse in the popular media neglects structural issues of poverty. Instead the debate focuses on changing welfare recipients' behaviors, by means such as denying benefits to those who conceive …

Human Services: A Discussion Paper, David Wiles Jan 1998

Human Services: A Discussion Paper, David Wiles

Research outputs pre 2011

Human services is an emergent field of study and work in Australia. Its definition is complex, needing continuing theoretical and empirical clarification. Despite the contemporary decline of the Australian welfare state, human services has emerged in cultural congruence with historic Australian notions of a 'fair go', of social equity, and of social egalitarianism. Human services constitutes a nascent profession, which - in the main - helps people with problems, particularly including members of the social 'underclass'. With much of its origins in volunteerism and the voluntary sector, human service organisational theory is now developing, and is helping workers and students …

Can Patents Deter Innovation? The Anticommons In Biomedical Research, Michael Heller, Rebecca S. Eisenberg Jan 1998

Can Patents Deter Innovation? The Anticommons In Biomedical Research, Michael Heller, Rebecca S. Eisenberg

Faculty Scholarship

The "tragedy of the commons" metaphor helps explain why people overuse shared resources. However, the recent proliferation of intellectual property rights in biomedical research suggests a different tragedy, an "anticommons" in which people underuse scarce resources because too many owners can block each other. Privatization of biomedical research must be more carefully deployed to sustain both upstream research and downstream product development. Otherwise, more intellectual property rights may lead paradoxically to fewer useful products for improving human health.

20th Century Rhetorical Influences On United States-Mexico Relations, A. Gene Wendorf Jan 1998

20th Century Rhetorical Influences On United States-Mexico Relations, A. Gene Wendorf

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The thesis documents the important influences that have shaped Mexican-American relations in the late 19th century and in the 20th century. These influences uncover areas that go over and beyond the conventional schools of diplomacy. They include a whole myriad of forces. The thread of our relations is found to be based largely on self determination made by each Presidential administration.

It is demonstrated that many Presidents have acted as their own statesmen in regard to Mexico. In searching for influences the researcher finds culture, language, technology, politics, economics, history, geography and religion as relevant. The nature of United States …

An Analysis Of Hanay Geiogamah's Contributions To Native American Ritual Drama, Monica L. Franzen

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this research paper was to recognize Hanay Geiogamah's contributions to Native American ritual drama and how Geiogamah and his Native American drama incorporates the culture and rituals of Native Americans in the theatrical environment.

Hanay Geiogamah has a purpose in his plays to present and preserve living Indian traditions and to reveal the facts of Indian life in America today (Huntsman, "New" xi). This study refers to two plays written by Hanay Geiogamah: "Body Indian" and "49." In "Body Indian" Geiogamah explores dramatically the stereotypes that Euro-American society has established of the Native American as true and …

Storytelling In Project Heart To Heart: A Means To Bridge Generational Gap In Post-1965 Filipino Immigrant Families, Juanita Toledo Santos Nacu Edd Jan 1998

Storytelling In Project Heart To Heart: A Means To Bridge Generational Gap In Post-1965 Filipino Immigrant Families, Juanita Toledo Santos Nacu Edd

Dissertations

As we share our experiences with others, we also explore its meaning to ourselves and to whomever it is being shared with. This is how stories are told. Most families usually develop a body of stories that is passed on from one generation to the next generation. These stories are used to preserve the family member's identity, history, and values. The stories touch not only our past experiences, but also influences our present and links it to the future. This study explored the Filipino American families' experiences of storytelling as a means of bridging together past, present, and future experiences …

Voices Against Discrimination And Exclusion: Latino School Leaders' Narratives For Change, Jaime J. Romo Edd Jan 1998

Voices Against Discrimination And Exclusion: Latino School Leaders' Narratives For Change, Jaime J. Romo Edd

Dissertations

Many scholars, practitioners, and policy makers know very little about individual Latino administrators' cultural and professional experiences, responses to discrimination, and patterns or institutional conditions which relate to K-12 ethnic minority administrators' success. Moreover, many are also unaware that as ethnic diversity increases, the relative proportion of minority administrators, many of whom could be role models, shrinks. Once we can recognize this as seeds for inequity in society, we might be able to consider the ways in which our educational institution reinforces or counters societal inequities. By specifically exploring Latino administrators' experiences, because of the large Latino California presence, we …

The Development Of An Instrument To Identify Differing Views Of Leadership Within Organizations, Robert W. Siciliani Edd Jan 1998

The Development Of An Instrument To Identify Differing Views Of Leadership Within Organizations, Robert W. Siciliani Edd

Dissertations

Popular literature and much of the research reported in recognized journals imply that all members of an organization subscribe to the same ideas about leadership. However, a few authorities believe the research findings may result from test instruments based on a single view of leadership. Accurately identifying members' views of leadership is important because these views help shape behavior and expectations within the group. Differing views of leadership may also be a root cause of conflict among organizational members. This research used published definitions, descriptions, and measures of leadership to establish ten elements that seem to comprise the leadership construct. …

Leadership Responses To Change In 21st Century California State University Physical Education/Kinesiology Departments, Paulette Wong Hopkins Edd Jan 1998

Leadership Responses To Change In 21st Century California State University Physical Education/Kinesiology Departments, Paulette Wong Hopkins Edd

Dissertations

A number of driving and restraining forces seem to foretell of a paradigm shift in today's post-secondary physical education departments. While the majority might agree that some change is inevitable, of utmost importance and concern is the manner in which change occurs. Left to the vagaries of chance, change can be chaotic and destructive; conversely, when effectively managed by leadership, controlled change can result in immense benefits. This study details leadership perspectives and views on driving and restraining forces that may impact California State University (CSU) physical education departments into the 21st century. It is believed that an analysis of …

Probing Probation : Issues Of Gender And Organisation Within The Probation Service, Jill Annison Jan 1998

Probing Probation : Issues Of Gender And Organisation Within The Probation Service, Jill Annison

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

This study focuses on the probation service and the changes that are impacting on this part of the criminal justice system. It develops a theoretically distinctive approach, drawing on the literature of gender and organisations, in order to investigate issues relating to the organisational structures and processes experienced by male and female probation officers in three disparate probation areas in England. The opening two chapters examine the development of the organisation in terms of the hierarchical roles within the service and the gendered distribution of probation officer staff across the various grades. This review provides a unique understanding of the …

Patriarchy And Discordant Discourses In The Contemporary Roman Catholic Church : The Voices Of Priests And Women In Parish Settings, Geraldine Sharp Jan 1998

Patriarchy And Discordant Discourses In The Contemporary Roman Catholic Church : The Voices Of Priests And Women In Parish Settings, Geraldine Sharp

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

This thesis explores the sexual theology and contemporary teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and considers their implications for women and priests. It examines the salience and relevance of traditional teaching in the everyday lives of priests and women. It questions the link between a traditionally formed priesthood and the customary beliefs and practices of 'ordinary' English Catholics. Feminist scholarship has produced powerful insights into the ways in which organised religion has subordinated women through patriarchal structures and organisation, although there has been little exploration of the gendered nature of Catholic sexual theology. This thesis suggests that the negative construction …
