Uncovering The Chinese Web : The Four 'S' Dynamics Of Chinese Networking, Y H Wong
Uncovering The Chinese Web : The Four 'S' Dynamics Of Chinese Networking, Y H Wong
IIMB Management Review
China's transformation into a significant economy has been largely achieved by a "bamboo network". The importance of relationship networks is rooted in Chinese history, characterised by apparent strong government control based on Confucian codes of ethics. Wong takes a close look at the dynamics of networking and building guanxi. He begins with an exploration of the key socio-cultural concepts : friendship, trust, defensive mechanism and post-Confucian dynamics, before moving on to an analysis and explanation of the dynamics of guanxi network. He concludes by explaining how networks are built by providing an integrative four 'S' framework.

[Review Of] Leland T. Saito. Race And Politics: Asian Americans, Latinos, And Whites In A Los Angeles Suburb, David Covin
Ethnic Studies Review
This book is a testament to the maturity of ethnic studies curricula. They were developed by activist students, primarily of Asian, Native American, African, and Latino ancestry, and by faculty members who had no formal training in ethnic studies because the discipline did not exist. The faculty who participated in the creation of ethnic studies curricula were scholars with an interest in this emerging field or people who by dint of race were deemed to have interests in the field. By training they were primarily historians, English department faculty, sociologists, anthropologists, political scientists, and art and drama department faculty. There …
[Review Of] Yanick St. Jean And Joe R. Feagin. Double Burden: Black Women And Everyday Racism, Lisa Pillow
[Review Of] Yanick St. Jean And Joe R. Feagin. Double Burden: Black Women And Everyday Racism, Lisa Pillow
Ethnic Studies Review
The women interviewed in Double Burden share personal accounts of what it is like to be black and female in the contemporary United States. Drawing on over two hundred interviews with middle-class, well-educated black women, Yannick St. Jean and Joe R. Feagin present a collective memory of the misrepresentation of black women in our history, as well as individual experiences and triumphs. Through excerpts of personal narratives on topics including career, work, physical appearance, media representation, relationships with white women, and motherhood, the women recount experiences dealing with everyday racism, the denigrating social messages about their beauty, self-worth, sexuality, intelligence, …

[Review Of] Patsy West. The Enduring Seminoles: From Alligator Wrestling To Ecotourism, Cynthia R. Kasee
Ethnic Studies Review
Patsy West, long the archivist of photographs for the Seminole and Miccosukee Native nations of Florida, has written an exceptional book in her first full-length work, The Enduring Seminoles: From Alligator Wrestling to Ecotourism. Although she has devoted a lifetime to researching, writing, and cataloging the photos which show the degree of cultural change of these two groups, this is her first book on the subject.
[Review Of] Calvin Winslow, Ed. Waterfront Workers: New Perspectives On Race And Class, Arthur S. Evans Jr
[Review Of] Calvin Winslow, Ed. Waterfront Workers: New Perspectives On Race And Class, Arthur S. Evans Jr
Ethnic Studies Review
Students of race and ethnic relations have used two perspectives to explain the effects of industrialization on dominant and subordinate relations. One view holds that the process of industrialization results in individuals becoming detached from associations based in race and ethnicity as their life chances are determined by their participation and position in the economic order. A second perspective suggests that industrialization inevitably leads to tension and hostility between groups because they are forced to compete for scarce resources. The articles in Waterfront Workers: New Perspectives on Race and Class attempt to bridge the gap between these conflicting perspectives by …

[Review Of] Susan Lobo And Steve Talbot, Eds. Native American Voices: A Reader, Elsa O. Valdez
Ethnic Studies Review
This valuable collection of readings edited by leading scholars in the field enriches the social science and educational literature for several reasons. First, the book provides a wealth of information for both undergraduate and graduate students. The readings are multidisciplinary, and contain scholarly articles, journalistic selections, documents, oral history and testimony, songs and poetry, maps and charts. The readings encompass a global approach with their foci on Indian peoples of the United States, as well as a few selections of indigenous groups in Canada and Latin America. The book is arranged into nine interrelated parts with discussion questions, key terms, …

[Review Of] Devon A. Mihesuah, Ed. Natives And Academics: Researching And Writing About American Indians, Susan L. Rockwell
Ethnic Studies Review
As a white scholar of American Indian autobiographies, I approached this collection of essays edited by Devon A. Mihesuah, Associate Professor of History at Northern Arizona University, with both anticipation and trepidation. Conversations about the place of white scholars in all areas of ethnic studies has crested again recently and is appearing in many academic journals. In the May 1998, PMLA (113.3), the Guest Column by Nellie Y. McKay, Professor of American and African American Literature at University of Wisconsin, Madison, states that too many qualified white scholars are not being asked to fill positions, which results in African American …
[Review Of] Patricia Hill Collins. Fighting Words: Black Women & The Search For Justice, Venetria K. Patton
[Review Of] Patricia Hill Collins. Fighting Words: Black Women & The Search For Justice, Venetria K. Patton
Ethnic Studies Review
Collins' Fighting Words builds on her previous work, Black Feminist Thought, as she explores standpoint theory and "the outsider within" position and their usefulness for Black feminist thought. She structures her analysis by critiquing its effectiveness as critical social theory. For Collins, "Critical social theory constitutes theorizing about the social in defense of economic and social justice." Because African American women and other oppressed groups seek economic and social justice, she posits that their social theories may generate new perspectives on injustice.

Manuel De Recherche Opérationnelle En Matière De Planification Familiale, Andrew A. Fisher, John E. Laing, John E. Stoeckel, John Townsend
Reproductive Health

Integrating Sti/Hiv Services Into Existing Mch/Fp Programs, Baker Ndugga, Ian Askew
Reproductive Health
The presence of certain STIs increases the risk of the sexual transmission of HIV. Thus, controlling STIs can reduce the incidence of HIV. Almost all women in the East and Southern African regions attend MCH/FP clinics regularly, and recent surveys have shown that the prevalence levels of many STIs, including HIV, can be high for women seeking FP and antenatal services, even though they are frequently asymptomatic. MCH/FP services are provided by medically trained staff with many of the same skills needed for managing STIs. Consequently, several MCH/FP programs have started looking for ways to integrate STI management strategies, such …

Reproductive Health
This book presents in-depth reports on promising new interventions that have been developed and important programmatic changes that have been achieved by operations research in Latin America between 1995 and 1998. The INOPAL III project has made advances in five areas including access and quality of services, integration of family planning and other reproductive health services, financial sustainability, post-abortion care, and emergency contraception. Each of these topics are represented by at least three studies conducted in two or more countries. The operations research projects discussed under each topic are not replications of a single study. They use different research designs …

Emergency Contraception In Zambia: Setting A New Agenda For Research And Action, Yusuf Ahmed, M. Ketata, John P. Skibiak
Reproductive Health
This report summarizes the activities and findings of the first phase of the operations research study, “Enhancing Access to Family Planning Services through the Introduction of Emergency Contraception.” Launched in September 1997, the study was designed to explore a broad range of issues relating to emergency contraception within a developing country context. With financial and technical support from the United States Agency for International Development, the World Health Organization, the Canadian Public Health Association, and the British Department for International Development (DFID), the study consists of an initial exploratory exercise and a subsequent research phase. The report is divided into …

Youth Centres In Ghana: Assessment Of The Planned Parenthood Association Of Ghana Programme, Evam Kofi Glover, Annabel Erulkar, Joana Nerquaye-Tetteh
Reproductive Health
The sexual and reproductive health of adolescents has become a major public concern, particularly with the advent of HIV/AIDS. Many organizations have tried to find strategies to reach youth with reproductive health (RH) information and services through various service delivery models. One such model has been the multipurpose youth center approach. Multipurpose youth centers typically include recreational or vocational services as entry points for RH and family planning (FP) information and services. There is some evidence in a variety of African settings (notably Kenya and Zimbabwe) suggesting that these centers are underutilized and not cost-effective. As a result, the Planned …

Peru Logistics Chain Analysis, Jeanne Noble, James R. Foreit
Reproductive Health
The inventory module of situation analysis, developed by the Population Council, has been adapted to help generate indicators of logistics system functioning suggested by the Evaluation Project and to provide an analytical framework that permits more accurate estimations of the frequency, location, and patterns of logistics problems. In 1996, the module was implemented in southern Peru. In 1997, the same module was implemented in the province of Santa and two provinces of Huancavelica. Comparable information was obtained from 149 service delivery points (SDPs) in four departments. Data include inventories of contraceptive supplies and materials required for safe delivery of contraception; …

An Assessment Of The Zimbabwe Family Planning Programme: Results From The 1996 Situation Analysis Study, Lewis Ndhlovu, Hazel M.B. Dube, Caroline S. Marangwanda
Reproductive Health
Within the past ten years, the Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) has conducted two major studies for assessing the availability and quality of reproductive health services. The two studies, generally referred to as Situation Analysis studies, were conducted in 1991 and 1996. The 1996 survey collected data from 192 health facilities spread throughout Zimbabwe. During this exercise, an inventory of physical facilities, equipment, and educational materials was taken. In addition, 758 provider–client interactions of new and revisit clients were observed. Exit interviews were conducted with service providers, and with family planning and maternal and child health clients. In this …

Western Writers Series Digital Editions
In July 1992, Newsweek ran an article titled “Don’t Fence Them Out,” a piece that explores the Intermountain literary renaissance of the past few decades. The article includes a sidebar describing places where there are “Too many writers,” listing “Albuquerque,” “Portland,” and “All of Montana.” The same sidebar includes four titles under the heading “Books walking off the shelves out West (but good luck finding 'em back East).” One of those works listed is Rick Bass’s The Ninemile Wolves (1992), his sixth book. Bass’s career substantiates the prideful claim reflected in the title of Montana’s centennial literary anthology, The Last …

This essay draws on that experience, focusing on approximately half a dozen particularly good articles that have appeared in the Journal during my editorial tenure. Most of these describe new ideas, offering detailed information for the curious reader who might want to emulate the author's approach or simply to learn what others in the legal academy are doing. Typically, however, these papers contain little or no meaningful assessment or evaluation. "Descriptive" is too often a pejorative term of dismissal. But good description is often an essential first step toward understanding. Because I believe that more rigorous evaluation could add to …

Crime Or Punishment: The Parental Corporal Punishment Defense - Reasonable And Necessary, Or Excused Abuse, Kandice Johnson

The parental right to use physical force to discipline and restrain children is a privilege firmly rooted in the American system of jurisprudence. This privilege is often asserted as a defense when parents are charged with a crime of aggression against their child. While the privilege to use disciplinary force is universally recognized as a defense in criminal actions, it is equally acknowledged that child abuse is a pervasive reality of American life. This article postulates that current laws, addressing assertion of the parental privilege defense in criminal actions, fail either to provide adequate guidance to parents or to sufficiently …

Should Mediators Evaluate? A Debate Between Lela P. Love And James B. Boskey
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
The Editors of the Cardozo Online Journal of Conflict Resolution publish this debate with sadness over the death of James Boskey, who died recently, but with gratitude to have this opportunity to present and preserve his wisdom, knowledge and humor.
Should Mediators Evaluate: A Debate Between Lela P. Love and James B. Boskey marks our inaugural publication of the Cardozo Online Journal of Conflict Resolution (“COJCR”) which the Journal would like to dedicate to the life and works of James Boskey. In the months before his untimely passing, Professor Boskey graciously encouraged us to proceed with the publication of the …
