The Forgotten Many: A Study Of Poor Urban Whites, Reba L. Chaisson
The Forgotten Many: A Study Of Poor Urban Whites, Reba L. Chaisson
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Being White in America is thought to ensure social and economic stability, but the lives of Whites who are poor run contrary to these assumptions. Members of this group, the focus group of this study, receive food stamps, public aid and general assistance payments on a monthly basis. And they rely on public health clinics and food pantries to get by-programs and services that are viewed by the larger society as being tapped only by Blacks. This paper examines the differences and similarities between the poverty experiences of Blacks and Whites. The research for this analysis consisted of participant observation …

Attitudinal Predictors Of Preferred Policy Options: Contrasting Afdc With Work Programs, Jill Littrell, Sahna Diwan
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Two studies were conducted in order to determine the attitudinal predictors of support for AFDC, work programs, and the option of the government playing no role in protecting the welfare of poor children whose families have no income. The first study evaluated this question in 362 students of Criminal Justice, Business, Urban Studies, and Public Administration at an urban university in Georgia. The second study evaluated the question in a telephone poll sample of 822 randomly sampled Georgians throughout the state. Majorities in both samples preferred work programs. In the student sample, all three choice groups were distinguishable on the …
Estimating Homeless Populations Through Structural Equation Modeling, Christopher G. Hudson
Estimating Homeless Populations Through Structural Equation Modeling, Christopher G. Hudson
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
This article overviews the results from a test of a model of homeless populations throughout the 3,141 counties of the United States. The data were extracted from the 1990 Census, a Census Bureau survey of its enumerators at completion of the census, and other governmental sources. The model was tested using the generally weighted least squares algorithm, as implemented under the Extended LISREL model. It was found that urbanization, servicetization, McKinney funding, and systematic error arising out of more vigilant enumeration efforts in urban areas, collectively explained 80% of the variation in rates of homelessness. The model was then used …

The Social Construction Of Workforce Development Organizations In Singapore And Penang, Malaysia, Daniel E. Berry
The Social Construction Of Workforce Development Organizations In Singapore And Penang, Malaysia, Daniel E. Berry
Student Scholarship
This study reviews the experiences of workforce development organizations in Singapore and Penang, Malaysia. On the basis of the similarities in population and workforce size, the study argues that lessons can be learned from the two places which can be applied to U.S. regions. The study further argues that place-based workforce development strategies, such as those implemented in Singapore and Penang, will be essential to the economic competitiveness of manufacturing and export-oriented regions in a globalized economy. In the first part of the study, the Singapore and penang experiences are placed in the context of what has been referred to …
Solution-Focused Couples' Group Therapy, Lafray Kelley
Solution-Focused Couples' Group Therapy, Lafray Kelley
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Solution-focused therapy is one of the models of brief family therapy that has come into prominence during the 1980s and 90s. Whereas earlier forms of family therapy concentrated on problems and the behaviors that maintained them, solution-focused therapy places its emphasis on "exceptions" to the problem--times when it is not happening--and seeks to elaborate on and amplify these exceptions.
A solution-focused therapy model has been used with individuals, couples, and groups of individuals, but a search of the relevant literature revealed no information on its use with couples' groups. The purpose of this study was to develop a solution-focused treatment …

Predicting Family Strength In Families Caring For Children With Disabilities, Katrina J. F. Ericson
Predicting Family Strength In Families Caring For Children With Disabilities, Katrina J. F. Ericson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This research sought to identify factors that might be useful in helping to predict family strengths in families caring for a child with a disability. Based on the ABCX model designed for families in crisis, this research examined severity of child's disability (A); the family's existing resources of household income, education of the mother, and mother's marital status (B); the family's perception of family resources, family support, and parenting stress (C); and how these influence family strength (X) over time. In relation to the ABCX model, it was hypothesized that the aforementioned constructs would be associated with each other, and …
Familial And Extrafamilial Correlates Of Children's Child-Care Perceptions, Michael K. Godfrey
Familial And Extrafamilial Correlates Of Children's Child-Care Perceptions, Michael K. Godfrey
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to identify the individual, familial, and child-care characteristics related to children's perceptions of their nonparental child-care environments. One-hundred seventy-five children, their families, and child-care providers participated in this study. Children attended one of three forms of child care: large center-based child-care settings, home-based child-care settings, and a preschool. Correlates of children's perceptions of their child-care experiences came from variables classified into six categories: individual child characteristics, family structure, family processes, previous child-care experiences, child-care structure, and child-care processes.
Children's perceptions were elicited through the Child Care Game Assessment (CCGA), a role-playing game-like experience for …
Risk Factors In Adolescent Problem Behaviors Among Native And Nonnative Americans, Roger B. Christensen
Risk Factors In Adolescent Problem Behaviors Among Native And Nonnative Americans, Roger B. Christensen
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The high incidence of adolescent problem behaviors in the United States raises major concerns. These problem behaviors include: sexually transmitted diseases, unintended pregnancies, suicide, depression, substance abuse, crime against persons and property, and delinquency. Consequently, there continues to be a high level of concern and interest in different ethnic populations of adolescents and their level of risk.
This study evaluated the following problem behaviors: substance abuse, suicide, delinquency, and sexual intercourse; and the risk factors that increase the probability of these problem behaviors occurring. Specifically, the study identified the profiles of the population in relationship to the problem behaviors comparing …
An Exploratory Study Of The Termination Process In Marriage And Family Therapy, Jennifer H. Childers
An Exploratory Study Of The Termination Process In Marriage And Family Therapy, Jennifer H. Childers
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The purpose of this study was to explore and better understand termination in the field of marriage and family therapy, as well as to generate a working model of termination. Data were obtained from a total of 40 marriage and family therapists (MFTs) licensed in the state of Utah. Two research questions were posed about termination and how client type and treatment progress may influence the termination process: (1) Given that MFTs see individuals, couples, and families, are there differences and similarities across client types in regard to how therapy is terminated?; and (2) Does termination differ in regard to …

Recidivism Rates Of Level Six Residential Programs For Youthful Male Sexual Offenders: 1995-1996, Kevin N. Barlow
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The phenomenon of youthful sexual offending has received increased attention in recent years in the state of Utah. As a result. programs have been developed to treat the sexual offender within residential treatment centers. However. the efficacy of these programs had not been examined prior to the initiation of this project. The success of the programs has been assessed by examining recidivistic activity as measured by post-treatment criminal histories. The results of this study indicate that the sample of clients departing from treatment in Utah in the year 1995 has a recidivism rate of93.2% for sexual criminal behavior, as of …

Financial Management And Financial Problems As They Relate To Marital Satisfaction In Early Marriage, Barbara C. Kerkmann
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The financial management habits and perceptions of young married couples were examined, as well as their financial problems and perceptions of their problems' magnitude in an attempt to assess the relationship of these financial factors to marital satisfaction. A survey was delivered to 604 residents of family student housing at Utah State University. The spouse who predominantly handled family finances was asked to complete the survey. By using an incentive for completing the survey, a response of 51.32% was obtained. It was hypothesized that both financial management practices and problems would be related to a couple's reported satisfaction with their …
Attitudes And Roles Of Women And Minorities In Community And Urban Forestry Professions, Hope A. Bragg
Attitudes And Roles Of Women And Minorities In Community And Urban Forestry Professions, Hope A. Bragg
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Community and urban forestry is a multifaceted field ranging from tree planting to removal, hazard assessment, and public relations. However, the racial and gender diversity of the community forestry workforce is remarkably low. To gain a better understanding of this lack of diversity, I surveyed professionals in two major community/urban forestry organizations. Age, income, and years in the profession were considered, along with education level, to determine if there is some underlying reason for low representation of women and minorities in the community/urban forestry field. I found that while white males dominated all work sectors (especially private organizations), women were …
The Enemies Of God's People-A Comparison Of Pauline And Jewish Exegesis, Charles Schulz
The Enemies Of God's People-A Comparison Of Pauline And Jewish Exegesis, Charles Schulz
Master of Sacred Theology Thesis
In light of the current re-evaluation of points of identity and divergence between Pauline Christianity and Judaism, this thesis presents a study of how each religion applied a single motif from the Psalter: the enemies of God's people. We start from the obvious common ground, the Old Testament shared by both Paul and the Jew as their sacred text. The work focuses on the unique opportunity afforded by the text of Romans 3:9-20, where Paul cites the Old Testament depiction of the wicked enemies. Next, we survey how apocalyptic and rabbinic Judaism developed and employed the enemy theme. Our conclusion …

Lest We Forget: Buchanan V. Warley And Constitutional Jurisprudence Of The "Progressive Era", Richard A. Epstein
Lest We Forget: Buchanan V. Warley And Constitutional Jurisprudence Of The "Progressive Era", Richard A. Epstein
Vanderbilt Law Review
The two principal papers in this collection are devoted to an analysis of one of the Supreme Court's landmark decisions of the Progressive era, Buchanan v. Warley.' Both David Bernstein and Michael Klarman reveal ambitions that go beyond a single case, as each discusses in detail a large part of the Progressive era jurisprudence on race relations that set the stage for Buchanan v. Warley. A short introduction is hardly the place to quibble with these papers on points of detail. But it is the place to raise one neglected theme that requires fresh emphasis. The constitutional jurisprudence that led …
Philip Sober Controlling Philip Drunk: "Buchanan V. Warley" In Historical Perspective, David E. Bernstein
Philip Sober Controlling Philip Drunk: "Buchanan V. Warley" In Historical Perspective, David E. Bernstein
Vanderbilt Law Review
In Buchanan v. Warley the Supreme Court found that a Louisville, Kentucky, residential segregation ordinance was unconstitutional because it interfered with the Fourteenth Amendment right to own and dispose of property and could not be justified as a police power measure.' The Buchanan decision came at a crucial juncture in the history of American race relations. Several cities in the southern and border states had recently passed residential segregation ordinances, and other cities were poised to follow suit if the Supreme Court ruled that such ordinances were constitutional. Several northern cities were considering adopting residential segregation laws as well,' and …
Progressive Era Race Relations Cases In Their "Traditional" Context, Mark V. Tushnet
Progressive Era Race Relations Cases In Their "Traditional" Context, Mark V. Tushnet
Vanderbilt Law Review
The pioneering African-American historian Rayford Logan called the early years of the Progressive era the "nadir" of race relations in the United States. Historians and political scientists who study the Supreme Court generally agree that Supreme Court decisions are rarely substantially out of line with the kind of sustained national consensus regarding race relations that Logan described. Professors Bernstein and Karman point to popular culture, including the roaring success of D.W. Griffith's epic Birth of a Nation attacking Reconstruction and defending the Ku Klux Klan, and elite opinion such as the flourishing of scientific racism to demonstrate that there was …
Race And The Court In The Progressive Era, Michael J. Klarman
Race And The Court In The Progressive Era, Michael J. Klarman
Vanderbilt Law Review
In the second decade of the twentieth century, the Supreme Court decided four prominent (groups of) cases involving race. On each occasion, the civil rights claim won in some significant sense. One set of cases involved so-called peonage legislation-laws that coerced (primarily) black labor. In Bailey v. Alabama, the Court invalidated under the federal Peonage Act of 18672 and the Thirteenth Amendment an Alabama law making it a crime to enter, with fraudulent intent, into a labor contract that provided for advance payment of wages; the law made breach of the contract prima facie evidence of fraudulent intent, and Alabama …

Acculturation Of A Mexican-American Male Population And Gender Role Conflict, Gary Evan Leka
Acculturation Of A Mexican-American Male Population And Gender Role Conflict, Gary Evan Leka
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This study examined the effects of different modes of acculturation upon self reported levels of gender role conflict, and explored the relationship among acculturative stress, the concepts of Machismo and Familism and gender role conflicts. Hispanic males (N = 164) from a university with an 90% Hispanic enrollment were surveyed. Low Bicultural subjects differed significantly upon the factors of restrictive emotionality and restrictive affectionate behavior between men than other modes of acculturation. Machismo was found to be significantly related to stress and conflicts with gender roles, while Familism was found to be related to two of the patterns of gender …
Voces De Las Buenas Mujeres: An Ethnographic Study Of Marianismo Among Mexican American And Mexican Women, Lori Anne Ruiz
Voces De Las Buenas Mujeres: An Ethnographic Study Of Marianismo Among Mexican American And Mexican Women, Lori Anne Ruiz
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
Research has focused on gender roles of the Hispanic male and female in regards to the machismo social construct. The current study examines the other side of machismo, via Gil and Vasquez's (1996) Ten Commandments of Marianismo, and explores the validity of this social construct through interviews with Mexican American and Mexican women. Twenty Mexican American and Mexican women were selected through a nonrandom purposive sample to participate in the interviews. The taped interviews were analyzed verbatim. Eight categories emerged which are directly related to marianismo. The women's responses are used to convey their attitudes, roles, and relationships and to …

The Future Of Enterprise Organizations, Eric W. Orts
The Future Of Enterprise Organizations, Eric W. Orts
Michigan Law Review
Both the law and business schools at the University of Michigan offer a basic course in Enterprise Organization. This tradition owes to the influence of Professor Alfred Conard, one of the leading scholars of his generation, who taught during most of his career at the University of Michigan Law School. The tradition persists in part because Enterprise Organization suggests an appropriately broad view of its topic, unlike more common course titles such as Corporations or Business Associations. We live in a world populated not only by people but also the organized legal entities we create. Business firms and nonprofit organizations …
