Minority Over-Representation In The Juvenile Justice System, Shirley G Burgess
Minority Over-Representation In The Juvenile Justice System, Shirley G Burgess
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Minority over-representation in the juvenile justice system is a national concern. Research in this area is limited, however, there is indication that minority over-representation, particularly of African-American youth, seems to occur at various stages of juvenile justice processing. It is my belief that once arrested, minority youth are more likely to be certified as an adult than white youth. This paper examines the certification process in Clark County, Nevada, by studying a random sample of 200 cases. The results suggest that this theory holds true. The labeling perspective offers the best explanation of disparate treatment of African-American youth. Discrimination has …
Health Care Needs Of Sheltered Homeless Women, Mary Ellen Gauthier
Health Care Needs Of Sheltered Homeless Women, Mary Ellen Gauthier
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Identification of health needs of sheltered homeless women is a vital step in assisting this vulnerable population to productive members of society. The purpose of the study was to determine the health care needs of sheltered homeless women in LasVegas. Few studies have been done focusing on the health needs of sheltered homeless women. Dorthea Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory of Nursing provided the theoretical framework for this descriptive study. In order to identify health needs, fifty women participated in structured interviews where both objective and subjective data were collected. Frequencies were calculated in order to describe the population and identify …
The Inclusion Of Herbal Remedies In The Patient Care Practices Of Nurse Practitioners, Diane Renee Stricker
The Inclusion Of Herbal Remedies In The Patient Care Practices Of Nurse Practitioners, Diane Renee Stricker
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to describe the extent that nurse practitioners acquire knowledge, evaluate, recommend, and teach the safe use and acquisition of herbal remedies to their patients. Additionally, the study sought to investigate factors associated with the frequency nurse practitioners recommended herbal remedies. A survey was constructed and mailed to 600 randomly selected members of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners; Of the 304 returned questionnaires, 264 of the respondents identified exclusively as family nurse practitioners (FNP). Because of the low response rate for specialties outside of family nurse practitioners, the study sample utilized consisted exclusively of …
The Hidden Age Revolution: Emergent Integration Of All Ages, Matilda White Riley
The Hidden Age Revolution: Emergent Integration Of All Ages, Matilda White Riley
Center for Policy Research
Over the past 30 years my colleagues and I have been focusing on conceptual and empirical work (the aging and society paradigm) that does not create policies, but can inform them. The most immediate phase of this long cumulative history is leading us now to hidden changes in people's lives and social institutions that herald a new phenomenon world-wide--a phenomenon that may have momentous implications for the policies of the future. We call it "age integration" because it *integrates* older people with others of every age. When I come to the end of my lecture, I hope you will see …

Redefining Babes, Booze And Brawls: Men Against Violence. Towards A New Masculinity., Luoluo Hong
LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses
Despite evidence that 90% of violent crimes are committed by men, higher education professionals and researchers still understand relatively little about the process by which mate students acquire the attitudes, knowledge, values and skills which serve as deterrents to perpetrating violence against women and against other men. Men Against Violence is a peer advocacy organization at a large, public Research I institution in the South which focuses on the special and unique responsibility men have to end violence. Through participation in a wide array of service learning, community action and leadership opportunities, MAV members challenge cultural norms which link masculinity …

Clients' And Students' Stories: Avoiding Exploitation And Complying With The Law To Produce Scholarship With Integrity, Nina W. Tarr
Clinical Law Review
The students sit in the clinic shaking their heads over their client's situation. The professor joins in the discussion and some other students gather around to hear the story, to add their comments and to assist in developing strategy. The next day, the professor listens while the students counsel the client who tells them some additional facts and looks worried. They step into the courtroom where the opposing counsel and judge waltz through the proceedings like old dance partners while the students make an excellent effort to keep up. On the way back to the law school, the professor and …

Partnerships/Community
Health services delivery is increasingly shifting to community-based settings. The competencies required of future health professionals require a shift in their educational preparation. Service leaning is suggested as an educational method with the potential to reform health professions education in tandem with the changes occurring in the health services delivery. The Health Professions Schools in Service to the Nation Program (HPSISN), a US demonstration project of service learning in the health professions, examines the impact of service leaning on students, faculty, communities and institutions across a wide array of universities and community settings. This paper describes the evaluation of the …
Sex Differences In The Relations Between Sex Guilt And Sexual Experience, Melanie M. Brown
Sex Differences In The Relations Between Sex Guilt And Sexual Experience, Melanie M. Brown
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine whether sex differences exist in the relations between sex guilt and sexual behavior. Past research has examined variables that affect sex guilt and found that sex guilt and sexual behavior are inversely related. This study specifically examined sex differences and how they affect this relation. The participants were 163 male and female undergraduate students at Eastern Illinois University. Mosher's revised Sex guilt Inventory and Paulson and Sputa's Sexual Behavior Frequency survey were administered along with a biographical data sheet.
Bivariate correlation analyses revealed that sex guilt and sexual behavior were inversely related. …
Service Learning: More Than Community Service, Bettina Lankard Brown
Service Learning: More Than Community Service, Bettina Lankard Brown
Service Learning, General
Service learning, like apprenticeship and school-to-work, contextualizes student learning. It provides an environment in which students can acquire organizational, team, problem-solving, and other skills, attitudes, and capabilities necessary for future work and learning. This ERIC Digest looks at service learning: what it is and how it supports vocational and career development outcomes.
Challenges And Strategies For Success With Service-Learning In Preservice Teacher Education, Jeffrey B. Anderson, Terry Pickeral
Challenges And Strategies For Success With Service-Learning In Preservice Teacher Education, Jeffrey B. Anderson, Terry Pickeral
Service Learning, General
This study examined challenges to the use of service-learning in preservice teacher education and also strategies used to overcome those challenges. We surveyed 123 teacher educators, education deans, and state department of education service-learning coordinators to gain their perspective regarding challenges most critical to the use of service-learning in teacher education. We then interviewed 42 of the survey respondents to obtain detailed descriptions of specific strategies used to overcome challenges. Results indicate the most critical challenges relate to lack of time for teacher educators to plan and implement service-learning, an already overcrowded curriculum, and a lack of alignment of service-learning …

"The Past Never Vanishes": A Contextual Critique Of The Existing Indian Family Doctrine, Lorie M. Graham
"The Past Never Vanishes": A Contextual Critique Of The Existing Indian Family Doctrine, Lorie M. Graham
American Indian Law Review
I don't know my own culture, . . . I am going to need your help in understanding . . . . Teach me, teach my children. These are the words of a forty-three-year-old Navajo woman on her first visit back to the Navajo Nation since her birth. Stolen as an infant, along with her twin brother, and adopted out on the black market, she was finally reunited with her family and community. Her journey home comes at a time when Native American nations are fighting proposed legislation and court-made rules that seek to limit the reach of the Indian …

Hardiness And Job Fitness For The Intensive Family Preservation Specialist: A Correlational Study, Sandi Fisher
Hardiness And Job Fitness For The Intensive Family Preservation Specialist: A Correlational Study, Sandi Fisher
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It is costly to train the counselors who serve in intensive Family Preservation Services (IFPS). The hiring agency must pay for traveling expenses in addition to any fee paid for training. When an IFPS worker chooses to terminate employment before the end of two years of employment, this puts a strain on an already tight budget. This problem could be alleviated by finding an efficient pre-hire screening instrument. The three personality traits described in Hardiness Theory literature: commitment, challenge, and control, are traits often used to describe the ideal IFPS worker. This study assessed IFPS workers to determine if the …

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis was carried out as part of a wider comparative study that was funded by the University of Plymouth and the Equal Opportunities Unit of the European Commission. Researchers from Great Britain, Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Sweden participated in this study. This thesis is based on the research that was earned out in London for which the author was solely responsible. The impetus for this research was to explore the implications for women of a largely unexplored aspect of European Community (EC) legislation. A lot of attention has focused on EC equal opportunities legislation but very little has been …

A Framework For Understanding Social Science Contributions To Ecosystem Management, Joanna Endter-Wada, Dale Blahna, Richard Krannich, Mark W. Brunson
Environment and Society Faculty Publications
We propose a framework for understanding the role that the social sciences should play in ecosystem management. Most of the ecosystem management literature assumes that scientific understanding of ecosystems is solely the purview of natural scientists. While the evolving principles of ecosystem management recognize that people play an important role, social considerations are usually limited to political and decision-making processes and to development of environmental education. This view is incomplete. The social science aspect of ecosystem management has two distinct components: one that concerns greater public involvement in the ecosystem management decision-making process, and one that concerns integrating social considerations …
The Relationship Between Employers' Perceived Organizational Context And Their Impressions Of The Employability Of Job Applicants With Either A Severe Psychiatric Or Physical Disability, John Constantine Bricout
The Relationship Between Employers' Perceived Organizational Context And Their Impressions Of The Employability Of Job Applicants With Either A Severe Psychiatric Or Physical Disability, John Constantine Bricout
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the relationship between favorable employability ratings of hypothetical job applicants with a severe disability and two aspects of employers' perceived organizational context: organizational climate and negotiation latitude, using a cross-sectional, correlational design. A survey including a hypothetical job applicant vignette in one of three conditions: non-disabled, severe physical disability (acquired brain injury), severe psychiatric disability (schizophrenia) was mailed out to a random sample of 1,000 employers selected from a national human resource membership list. Responses were received from 248 employers. The chief purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between employers' perceived organizational context and …
