Counseling Groups For High School Students, Rachel E. Williams
Counseling Groups For High School Students, Rachel E. Williams
Graduate Research Papers
Groups were first established in the public schools in the early 1900s. At this time, the group provided an environment in which to learn life skills and values rather than focusing on the group process (Gladding, 1995). There was a growth of groups in select schools during the 1910s, although the focus continued to be on individual counseling. In the 1930s, the focus of groups was on vocational and personal themes. They were often the responsibility of homeroom teachers. In these groups, the teacher was responsible for establishing friendly relationships and developing the right attitudes toward school, home, and the …

The "New Deal" Child Artist: Textiles From The Educational Alliance Art School, Joanne Dolan
The "New Deal" Child Artist: Textiles From The Educational Alliance Art School, Joanne Dolan
Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings
INTRODUCTION
Progressive educational theories, many which had their roots in the late nineteenth century, were put to the test as a result of the Federal Art Project initiative. A small collection of printed textiles at the Museum at FIT produced during the second half of the nineteen-thirties at the Educational Alliance Art School in New York City reflect philosophies relevant to the period of the New Deal. The textiles represent and illustrate major social forces in America: the late nineteenth century settlement house providing services such as language, citizenship, and skills training; Roosevelt's New Deal and the federal relief efforts …

Gay Men And The Process Of Becoming Authentic: An Exploratory Study, Thomas G. Wales
Gay Men And The Process Of Becoming Authentic: An Exploratory Study, Thomas G. Wales
Theses and Graduate Projects
The concept of authenticity has not been studied as it relates to the lives of gay men. Hence, the concept of authenticity was explored through the literature and qualitative research methods. *Participants were key informants, including ministers, psychologists, and social workers. The study findings revealed the oppressive and anxiety-provoking existential givens experienced by gay men. Also, the study findings revealed that some gay men seek to avoid suffering and succumb to dread, while others actively confront their suffering through courage, responsibility, love, faith, spontaneity, and creativity. The gay men who confront their suffering become more aware of their innate strengths …

Historical Analysis Of Past And Present Treatmeiyts Associated With Borderlne Personality Disorder, Jimmie Lee Willette
Theses and Graduate Projects
The following thesis examines the historical perspective of mental illness, leading to therapeutic interventions for individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder. The need for improved interventions are reflected in treatment failure with both historical and traditional therapies, including repeated hospitalizations, self- injurious behaviors and suicide attempts. This thesis uses the Systems Theory and Ecological Perspective to review and analyze past and present treatments, with special emphasis on the 'Dialectic Behavior Therapy,' (DBT) program initiated in 1993 exclusively for individuals diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder.

Groupwork In Business, Michelle Laird
Groupwork In Business, Michelle Laird
Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)
The purpose of this article was to review studies concerning the effects of group design on groupwork in business. It begins with a short overview of definitions of work groups and group phenomena, and follows with a literature review of the effects of size, group goals, sharing of information, diversity, gender, age, individual differences, familiarity among members, and techniques on decision making effectiveness. Next, difficulties and possible solutions are covered and finally, types of work groups used today are discussed. It has been found that there is no one team design that makes a team most effective.
