What Is Young Adult Literature?, Chris Crowe Jan 1998

What Is Young Adult Literature?, Chris Crowe

Faculty Publications

Have you ever wondered what exactly can be considered young adult literature (YAL)? If you've paid much attention to the book world around you lately, you've probably noticed that there seems to be some misunderstanding about what fits the YAL label and what doesn't. Unfortunatelv, this confusion has led some teachers and parents to beliew that YAL is little more than cheap, pulp novels—the kind of stuff English teachers ought to teach their students to avoid. I understand some of the causes of this confusion and, in the space of this issue's column, plan to set things straight.

A Test Of Additional Effort Expenditure In The "Walk Year" For Major League Baseball Players, Benjamin D. Grad Jan 1998

A Test Of Additional Effort Expenditure In The "Walk Year" For Major League Baseball Players, Benjamin D. Grad

University Avenue Undergraduate Journal of Economics

Whether they "overperform" or underperform, it is clear that there is incentive for players to do well in their walk year. This same incentive is not present for players either already tied up in long-term contracts or those without enough major league service time to qualify for free-agent status. This paper seeks to test whether the assertion that players perform better and expend more effort in their "walk year" is empirically observable.

Usable Software And It's Attributes: A Synthesis Of Software Quality: European Community Law And Human-Computer Interaction., Ronan Fitzpatrick, Catherine Higgins

Conference papers

Strategic managers and IS professionals who are responsible for specifying, acquiring and producing quality software products are not supported by the endless flow of new international standards, legislation and user requirements. In order to clarify the current situation for everybody concerned with software quality, and especially those interested in usability, there is a need for a new review and evaluation of the various strands that contribute to software quality. By way of review this paper recalls the original software quality factors which were defined twenty years ago by McCall et al. and presents a methodical analysis and synthesis of three …

Comparative Study Of Stock Trend Prediction Using Time Delay, Recurrent And Probabilistic Neural Networks, Donald C. Wunsch, Emad W. Saad, Danil V. Prokhorov Jan 1998

Comparative Study Of Stock Trend Prediction Using Time Delay, Recurrent And Probabilistic Neural Networks, Donald C. Wunsch, Emad W. Saad, Danil V. Prokhorov

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Three networks are compared for low false alarm stock trend predictions. Short-term trends, particularly attractive for neural network analysis, can be used profitably in scenarios such as option trading, but only with significant risk. Therefore, we focus on limiting false alarms, which improves the risk/reward ratio by preventing losses. To predict stock trends, we exploit time delay, recurrent, and probabilistic neural networks (TDNN, RNN, and PNN, respectively), utilizing conjugate gradient and multistream extended Kalman filter training for TDNN and RNN. We also discuss different predictability analysis techniques and perform an analysis of predictability based on a history of daily closing …

Epideictic Rhetoric And The Formation Of Collective Identity: Nineteenth-Century Mormon Women In Praise Of Polygamy, Robbyn Thompson Scribner Jan 1998

Epideictic Rhetoric And The Formation Of Collective Identity: Nineteenth-Century Mormon Women In Praise Of Polygamy, Robbyn Thompson Scribner

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, I will proceed as follows: my first chapter will be a general overview of epideictic rhetoric, focusing on the limitations of how it has traditionally been viewed and understood by theorists. At the end of that chapter I will establish a working definition of epideictic which extends traditional views about how epideictic can function in certain types of writings, focusing on the important role of the speaker in epideictic rhetoric and how it can work in enabling a community to create a collective identity. In the remainder of the thesis, I will analyze two texts in which …

The Impact Of "Fair Use" In The Higher Education Community: A Necessary Exception?, Oren R. Griffin, Stephana I. Colbert

Articles, Chapters in Books and Other Contributions to Scholarly Works

Despite legislative efforts to define it, the concept of Fair Use has been the subject of aggressive debate among publishers, authors, librarians, and users of copyrighted information ("academics") at academic institutions. With the advent of the Internet and the prospect of multimedia projects, the debate has intensified and expanded into the international community.

This Article focuses primarily on the challenges that face academic administrators and college and university attorneys seeking to advise their academic clients of the parameters of the Fair Use Doctrine-encouraging both sharing and dissemination of scholarly information, and compliance with the law, while limiting institutional liability. This …

Messages Of Individualism In French, Spanish, And American Television Advertising, Ronald E. Taylor, Joyce M. Wolburg Jan 1998

Messages Of Individualism In French, Spanish, And American Television Advertising, Ronald E. Taylor, Joyce M. Wolburg

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Individualism is a central value in French, Spanish, and American cultures. However, what it means to be an individual and how this is expressed varies among cultures. This study explores the ways that television advertising reflects individualism in French, Spanish, and American cultures and uses a qualitative approach that allows coding categories to emerge from the three countries' samples rather than imposing previously defined categories from a single culture. The study identifies six main advertising message strategies across the three cultures: the Efficient Individual, the Sensual Individual, the Attractive/Healthy Individual, the Esteemed Individual, the Performant(e) Individual, and the Intellectual Individual. …

Sovereign Bargains, Indian Takings, And The Preservation Of Indian Country In The Twenty-First Century, Raymond Cross Jan 1998

Sovereign Bargains, Indian Takings, And The Preservation Of Indian Country In The Twenty-First Century, Raymond Cross

Faculty Law Review Articles

This article develops a modern Indians taking doctrine by critically examining the unfolding of Marshall's Indian bargaining model through three distinct eras: 1) Chief Justice Marshall's construction of the Indian bargaining model as an American adaptation of the European doctrine of discovery; 2) the Supreme Court's subsequent reformulation of that model as the Indian plenary power doctrine; and 3) the Court's failed reconciliation of the Indian plenary power doctrine with the just compensation command of the Constitution.

A sketch of such a doctrine is provided by a case study of the 1949 taking of the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, a …

Not In My Backyard: The Clash Between Native Hawaiian Gathering Rights And Western Concepts Of Property In Hawaii, Samuel J. Panarella Jan 1998

Not In My Backyard: The Clash Between Native Hawaiian Gathering Rights And Western Concepts Of Property In Hawaii, Samuel J. Panarella

Faculty Law Review Articles

This article examines the uneasy truce that exists between Western property law and the original Hawaiian native gathering practices that existed before the arrival of Europeans. The author traces the development of Hawaiian law from early cases that severely restricted gathering rights to more permissive results. The article demonstrates both the strengths and weaknesses of the present system of land tenure in Hawaii and argues for the continued expansion of native Hawaiian gather rights providing such expansion takes place within, not outside of, the dominant fee simple land tenure system now in place in Hawaii.

[Introduction To] Allegories Of Dissent: The Theater Of Agustín Gómez-Arcos, Sharon G. Feldman

Bookshelf

This book is a case study of the relationship between art and oppression. It is the first book devoted to Gomez-Arcos, a member of a "lost" generation of Spanish dramatists who were silenced during the Franco era. It addresses three crucial issues that define both his literature and his life: censorship, exile, and bilingualism.

The Application Of Learning Organisation Theory To The Management Of Change : With Reference To The Engineering Sector, Penelope Ann Gardiner Jan 1998

The Application Of Learning Organisation Theory To The Management Of Change : With Reference To The Engineering Sector, Penelope Ann Gardiner

Plymouth Business School Theses

Recent contributions to the literature on organisations have emphasised the need for constant adaptation to keep pace with the accelerating rate of environmental change. The learning organisation is proposed as one of the most effective means of achieving succesful adaptation through a central focus on learning. This thesis examines the development of the .ideas which have led to the concept of the learning organisation and the application of this concept to the management of change. A number of reasons are proposed for the current adoption of learning organisation theory, these include the restructuring and downsizing of organisations, new Human Resource …

A Comparative Analysis Of A Returnable/Reusable Packaging System, Susan Starks Jan 1998

A Comparative Analysis Of A Returnable/Reusable Packaging System, Susan Starks

Theses

The primary objective of this study was to determine if the implementation of a returnable/reusable container system was financially viable for a specific company. The study attempted to document all cost parameters involved in making a capital budgeting decision regarding returnable containers. The specific cost parameters applicable to this project were then identified. The actual cost associated with each parameter was then obtained either through quotation or calculation. Several capital budget decision making cost analysis methods were presented. One method which best represented the project's qualifying factors was then chosen. The analysis was completed and the results were presented. The …

Age, Growth, And Mortality Of Black Drum, Pogonias Cromis, In The Chesapeake Bay Region, Cynthia M. Jones, Brian Wells

OES Faculty Publications

We used otolith ageing to describe the population dynamics of black drum, Pogonias cromis, collected over a three-year period from the Chesapeake Bay region's commercial and recreational fisheries. Black drum average age, total length, and weight were 26 years, 109.5 cm, and 22.1 kg respectively. The oldest fish was 59 years and fish older than 50 years were present in the catch from 1990 to 1992. Growth in length slowed by age 20, whereas growth in weight did not slow until age 45. A von Bertalanffy growth function was fitted to our data (L(infinity) = 117.3 cm, …

Iron In Ice Cores From Law Dome, East Antarctica: Implications For Past Deposition Of Aerosol Iron, R. Edwards, Peter N. Sedwick, Vin Morgan, C. F. Boutron, S. Hong

OES Faculty Publications

Total-dissolvable iron has been measured in sections of three ice cores from Law Dome, East Antarctica, and the results used to calculate atmospheric iron deposition over this region during the late Holocene and to provide a preliminary est. of aerosol iron deposition during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Ice-core sections dating from 56-2730 BP (late Holocene) and ∼18 000 BP (LGM) were decontaminated using trace-metal clean techniques, and total-dissolvable iron was determined in the acidified meltwaters by flow-injection analysis. Our results suggest that the atmospheric iron flux onto the Law Dome region has varied significantly over time-scales ranging from seasonal …

Lead Isotopes And Selected Metals In Ice From Law Dome, Antarctica, K. J. R. Rosman, W. Chisholm, C. F. Boutron, S. Hong, R. Edwards, Vin Morgan, Peter N. Sedwick

OES Faculty Publications

The isotopic composition. of Pb and the concentrations of Pb, Ba and Bi were measured in selected ice-core samples from Law Dome, East Antarctica, to a depth of 1196 m. The range of concentrations found in decontaminated ice was 0.03-1.5 pg g-1 for Pb, 0.9-6.1 pg g-1 for Ba and 0.4-17 fg g-1 for Bi, excluding the deepest sample which contained ∼1 ppm of rock dust. The abundances of all four stable lead isotopes were measured and gave 206Pb/207Pb ratios ≤ ∼1.23. A value of 208Pb/207Pb = 2.78 was measured in …

Establishing A Total Safety Culture Within A Flight Department, Willem J. Homan, William G. Rantz, Blair R. Balden

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

This article will present behavior-based principles and procedures that can be successfully applied to change safety attitudes in a Flight Department. First, limitations and flaws of the human condition are discussed, and three basic ways employees can learn safe behavior are addressed. Next, Crew Resource Management is proposed as a tool to increase overall safety in Business Aviation. Safety is then reviewed in the context of the overall goals of the corporation and the cost of doing business. Senior Corporate management is identified as holding the key to the successful and safe operation of the corporate Flight Department. Finally, critical …
