Philosophical Perspectives On Dramatic Art, Jane M. Gangi Jan 1998

Philosophical Perspectives On Dramatic Art, Jane M. Gangi

Education Faculty Publications

Describes how the author facilitates drama experiences in the foundations of education courses that she teaches for preservice teachers. Suggests the course helps students gain an understanding of the philosophies of education, the rationale for arts in the curriculum, as well as multiple perspectives of dramatic art, by learning through experience.

Host Plant Alters The Shape Of The Functional Response Of An Aphid Predator (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), Frank J. Messina, J. B. Hanks Jan 1998

Host Plant Alters The Shape Of The Functional Response Of An Aphid Predator (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), Frank J. Messina, J. B. Hanks

Biology Faculty Publications

The response of the lady beetle Propylea quatuordecimpunctata (L.) to the density of the Russian wheat aphid, Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), was measured in petri dish arenas as well as on plants with divergent leaf architectures. Logistic regression was used to distinguish the shape of the functional response (type II or III), and nonlinear least-squares regression was used to estimate attack coefficients (a) and handling times (Th). In dishes, the behavior of both beetle larvae and adults closely conformed to a type II response. Estimates of a and Th on whole plants were considerably different from those obtained from dishes, and …

The Holder In Due Course Doctrine As A Default Rule, Gregory E. Maggs Jan 1998

The Holder In Due Course Doctrine As A Default Rule, Gregory E. Maggs

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

The "holder in due course" doctrine, as implemented by Article 3 of the Uniform Commercial Code, says that a party who acquires a negotiable instrument in good faith, for value, and without notice of certain facts, and who also meets some additional requirements, takes the instrument free of competing claims of ownership and most defenses to payment. The standard justification for immunizing a holder in due course from claims and defenses is that the immunity will encourage beneficial commercial transactions. The standard explanation for the various requirements for attaining holder in due course status - good faith, value, lacking notice …

Remax: Software For Optimizing Ground-Water Management, Conjunctive Water Management, And Remediation Design, Richard C. Peralta, Alaa H. Aly

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

REMAX is a software package designed to assist water managers in developing optimal ground water or coordinated ground water/surface water strategies for a wide range of management problems. REMAX uses MODFLOW, MT3D, and other simulation models to develop the response matrix or response surface equations employed in the final optimization model. To address nonlinear systems (e.g., unconfined aquifers) accurately, REMAX uses a modified response-matrix method. REMAX several nonlinear functions to represent a wide variety of nonlinear response surfaces. REMAX can be used for deterministic or reliability-based optimization problems. Decision variables are ground-water extraction/injection rates and/or surface water diversion rates. State …

Determination Of Microbiological Quality Of Ice-Creambelong To Various Patisserie In Ankara, İrfan Erol, Özlem Küplülü, Belgin Siriken, T. Halûk Çeli̇k

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, a total of 100 ice cream samples, collected from various patisserie in Ankara, 30 of them vanilla, 26 of them chocolate and 44 of them fruit ice cream samples, were analysed microbiologically. While coliform and E. coli counts were determined with MPN technique, in the isolation of the salmonella enrichment technique and in the isolation of the total viable count, lactobacilli, micrococci and staphylococci, coagulase positive staphylococci, enterobacteriaceae, enterococci, pseudomonas, yeast and molds, drop plating technique were used. According to analysis findings, it was determined that 63.2% to 73.1% of vanilla ice cream samples, 73.0% to 57.4% …

Terminal Sedation As Palliative Care: Revalidating A Right To A Good Death, George P. Smith Ii Jan 1998

Terminal Sedation As Palliative Care: Revalidating A Right To A Good Death, George P. Smith Ii

Scholarly Articles

Not everyone finds a “salvific meaning” in suffering. Indeed, even those who do subscribe to this interpretation recognize the responsibility of each individual to show not only sensitivity and compassion but render assistance to those in distress. Pharmacologic hypnosis, morphine intoxication, and terminal sedation provide their own type of medical “salvation” to the terminally ill patient suffering unremitting pain. More and more states are enacting legislation that recognizes this need of the dying to receive relief through regulated administration of controlled substances. Wider legislative recognition of this need would go far toward allowing physicians, in the exercise of their reasonable …

‘Mixed’ Constitutions: Product Of An East-Central European Constitutional Melting Pot, Rett R. Ludwikowski Jan 1998

‘Mixed’ Constitutions: Product Of An East-Central European Constitutional Melting Pot, Rett R. Ludwikowski

Scholarly Articles

Part I of this Article discusses the difficulties involved in attempting to classify the new constitutions using traditional criteria. Part II examines the processes involved in the adoption of the various components of existing constitutional models into the constitutions of the East-Central European states, including separate analysis of the distributions of power, the structures of the legislatures, the electoral systems, the systems of governance and mechanisms of judicial enforcement provided by these instruments. Finally, Part III makes observations and draws conclusions regarding the processes examined in Part II.

Effects Of Submergence On Embryonic Survival And Developmental Rate Of The Florida Applesnail, Pomacea Paludosa: Implications For Egg Predation And Marsh Management, Richard L. Turner Jan 1998

Effects Of Submergence On Embryonic Survival And Developmental Rate Of The Florida Applesnail, Pomacea Paludosa: Implications For Egg Predation And Marsh Management, Richard L. Turner

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Aerial deposition of egg clutches by the aquatic Florida applesnail is believed to have evolved in response to aquatic egg predators. Adaptation to aerial conditions might, however, have rendered embryos intolerant of submergence, a potential occurrence in natural and managed marshes, rivers, and lakes. In this study, eggs were submerged in water for various durations in the laboratory to assess their ability to survive flooding; and clutches of known ages were submerged for several days in the field to determine if aquatic predators might decrease survival below levels expected to occur due to flooding alone. Submergence of clutches slowed embryonic …
