The Augusta Baker Collection of African-American Children's Literature and Folklore totals over 1600 volumes that highlight a wide range of subjects, genres, and formats of multicultural books for children, together with papers and illustrative material reflecting Baker's pivotal role in the field of children's librarianship. The collection is strong in reflecting the changes in subject matter of children's literature during the late twentieth century, as racial and ethnic folktales and legends were told and retold in numerous illustrated editions for new audiences. Assessing Silica And Dissolved Oxygen Effects On Copper Corrosion Control In Southern Nevada Water Treatment And Supply System, Abdel-Rahman M Toubat Jan 1998

Assessing Silica And Dissolved Oxygen Effects On Copper Corrosion Control In Southern Nevada Water Treatment And Supply System, Abdel-Rahman M Toubat

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A pilot plant study was performed to investigate both the effect of silica on the corrosion process in the water system, and the effect of increased oxygen concentration resulting from ozonation on copper corrosion in the water system. The piping system used in the pilot plant resembled a household piping system, and consisted of four loops of copper pipes. Silica was added to the finished water before entering the loops at three different concentrations and corrosion was monitored by measuring copper concentration in first-draw weekly samples taken from the pilot system. Silica addition was monitored on a daily basis. Alkalinity, …

Independent Counsel: Process And Policy, Sheri Michele Schwartz Jan 1998

Independent Counsel: Process And Policy, Sheri Michele Schwartz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Independent Counsel: Process and Policy examines the Office of the Independent Counsel, established by the Ethics in Government Act of 1978. It discusses the history of the Act, its implementation, and its application. Although there is a need for independent investigation of high-level government officials, the Act suffers from major defects which damage its credibility in accomplishing the goals Congress set with its passage. Independent Counsel: Process and Policy suggests changes to the Act which will increase the efficiency and fairness of the office, and encourage efforts to eradicate the public's perception of the independent counsel as a renegade.

The Midwife And Birth Of Conservatism In 1960: Barry Goldwater And The Ascendancy Of The Right In The Gop, Thomas R Wahl Jan 1998

The Midwife And Birth Of Conservatism In 1960: Barry Goldwater And The Ascendancy Of The Right In The Gop, Thomas R Wahl

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The Midwife and Birth of Conservatism in 1960 studies the rise of the dissident minority conservative faction of the Republican Party during the 1950s and early 1960s and its takeover of the Republican Party in 1964. Using established communication theories that define a social movement and a movement leader, the paper attempts to judge if the conservative movement and its leader, Barry Goldwater, can be viewed as, respectively, a full-fledged social movement and social movement leader. The thesis examines its subjects in a rhetorical and historical context by studying the rhetoric and historical events surrounding the ascension of the right …

Symbolic Student Speech Since Tinker, George W Flanders Jan 1998

Symbolic Student Speech Since Tinker, George W Flanders

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

When students exercise their First Amendment right of free speech, it can sometimes conflict with the obligation of public school officials to maintain a safe and orderly environment on their campuses. Three Supreme Court decisions---Tinker v. Des Moines, 393 U.S. 503 (1969), Bethel v. Fraser, 478 U.S. 675 (1986), and Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier, 484 U.S. 260 (1988)---have addressed the most common types of student expression. Hazelwood dealt with school-sponsored printed material and Fraser established ground rules to handle public address by students. In both instances, the Supreme Court endorsed the school's authority to regulate the amount of "free speech" that …

Violence Goes To School, Jack Levin Jan 1998

Violence Goes To School, Jack Levin

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The growing problem of juvenile violence has found its way into all of our institutions, including our schools. More and more school administrators report having to deal with violence on an everyday basis and having to suspend students for carrying weapons or being involved in violent confrontations. In response, many observers have suggested solutions that are politically expedient, but simply won’t work. They fail to address the question of what makes violence so appealing to so many youngsters, in the first place. Without providing healthy alternatives to violence, all the training programs, counseling, and therapy will have little effect on …

Nontraditional Students In Higher Education: Meeting Their Needs As Learners, Mary K. Bendixen-Noe, Carmen Giebelhaus

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The research literature indicates nontraditional students in higher education are different from their traditional counterparts. Understanding our university clientele is important in being able to meet their needs. Instructors are encouraged to analyze their teaching strategies and to incorporate those which can further aid older students in their educational pursuits.

Appropriate Educational Applications Of The World Wide Web Today, Loren D. Malm, Bobby G. Malone, Fred W. Nay, Brad E. Oliver, Nancy G. Saunders, Jay C. Thompson Jr. Jan 1998

Appropriate Educational Applications Of The World Wide Web Today, Loren D. Malm, Bobby G. Malone, Fred W. Nay, Brad E. Oliver, Nancy G. Saunders, Jay C. Thompson Jr.

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Although the majority of web based educational tools of today are unremarkable, are sometimes difficult to access and are not completely reliable, there is a mounting push for students and faculty to use these tools. The formidable technical challenges that confront students and faculty attempting to implement these technologies often quickly overshadows the more fundamental question—how should existing and future technologies be used in the teaching and learning process? Assuming, for example, that a given piece of technology could be implemented universally without difficulty and perform exactly as expected, what is the impact? Having made fair and unbiased evaluations concerning …

The Supermarket Supply Chain In Shanghai, Gavin Sinclair, Ananth Iyer, Jane Anderson Jan 1998

The Supermarket Supply Chain In Shanghai, Gavin Sinclair, Ananth Iyer, Jane Anderson

Department of Management Faculty Publications

The authors conducted a series of structured interviews with managers of ten supermarket chains in Shanghai to compare supermarket business practices in Shanghai with those in the United States, emphasizing logistics management issues. Shanghai supermarkets tend to be smaller than U.S. stores, but the store layout and product selection are similar in both countries. While the Shanghai supermarkets have modern scanning equipment, they do little quantitative sales or inventory analysis.

Voluntary Participation And Spite In Public Good Provision Experiments: An International Comparison, Timothy N. Cason, Tatsuyoshi Saijo, T. Yamato Jan 1998

Voluntary Participation And Spite In Public Good Provision Experiments: An International Comparison, Timothy N. Cason, Tatsuyoshi Saijo, T. Yamato

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This paper studies public good provision in the laboratory using the voluntary contribution mechanism, in a cross-cultural experiment conducted in the United States and Japan. Our environment differs from the standard voluntary contribution mechanism because in one treatment, subjects first decide whether or not to participate in providing this public good. This participation decision is conveyed to the other subject prior to the subjects' contribution decisions.

Expectations Formation And Inflation Persistence, J. A. Carlson, Neven Tomov Valev Jan 1998

Expectations Formation And Inflation Persistence, J. A. Carlson, Neven Tomov Valev

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This paper studies the dynamics of inflation if monetary policy is transparent only to part of the population. We find that average long-run inflation decreases in the proportion of agents with naive expectations and, because of tradeoffs between speed of adjustment and long-run inflation, central banks prefer a higher proportion of agents who form informed expectations in high inflation periods but not so in lower inflation periods. We use survey data on expectations of inflation from Bulgaria collected at the time a currency board was introduced in that country to test for influences on the heterogeneity of expectations across agents.

Determinants Of Currency Risk Premiums, J. A. Carlson, C. L. Osler Jan 1998

Determinants Of Currency Risk Premiums, J. A. Carlson, C. L. Osler

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

The risk premium is a function of both the interest rate differential and the gap between the current exchange rate and its long-run equilibrium in a model of the foreign exchange market with both non-speculating traders and rational speculators. If the speculators have an alternative to specializing in exchange-rate speculation, then there should be no presumption that uncovered interest rate parity will hold even approximately with a long-run equilibrium number of speculators. Furthermore, when other traders respond to interest-rate differentials, the model can give rise to a negative relationship between the interest-rate differential and the subsequent change in the exchange …

International Integration And Growth: A Survey And Empirical Investigation, Jon D. Haveman, V. Lei, J. S. Netz Jan 1998

International Integration And Growth: A Survey And Empirical Investigation, Jon D. Haveman, V. Lei, J. S. Netz

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

After surveying the theoretical and empirical work, we attempt a comprehensive assessment of different forms of international integration on growth. In particular, we consider the impact of trade, of inward foreign direct investment, of preferential treatment of less developed countries, and of membership in trade blocs.
