Linear And Nonlinear Optical Properties Of Knbo3 Ridge Waveguides, Tomas Pliska, Daniel Fluck, Peter Günter, Lutz Beckers, Christoph Buchal Jan 1998

Linear And Nonlinear Optical Properties Of Knbo3 Ridge Waveguides, Tomas Pliska, Daniel Fluck, Peter Günter, Lutz Beckers, Christoph Buchal

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Ridged channel waveguides in KNbO3 were produced using He+ ion implantation, photolithographic masking, and subsequent Ar+ ion sputtering. We investigated the linear and nonlinear optical characteristics of the waveguides. The effective mode indices are derived from the refractive index profiles using the effective index method. The losses are investigated as a function of wavelength and of the geometrical parameters channel width and ridge height. A minimum loss of 2 dB cm(-1) is measured at a wavelength of 0.633 mu m. We investigated the power handling capabilities at visible and near-infrared wavelengths. Second-harmonic generation in these waveguides is studied both theoretically …

革命陣營的內部論爭? : 分析1928年革命文學論爭魯迅成為攻擊目標的原因, Wang Chi Wong Jan 1998

革命陣營的內部論爭? : 分析1928年革命文學論爭魯迅成為攻擊目標的原因, Wang Chi Wong

Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese

Agency Beyond Subjectivity : The Unredeemed Project Of May Fourth Fiction, Deirdre Sabina Knight Jan 1998

Agency Beyond Subjectivity : The Unredeemed Project Of May Fourth Fiction, Deirdre Sabina Knight

Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報

This paper is part of a larger project in which I make a case for the central importance of the problem of free will to considerations of Chinese modernity. I begin by distinguishing between two key aspects of modernity and the Enlightenment: (1) subjectivity, or the realm of consciousness including the capacity for critical reason, and (2) agency, or acting on the world outside consciousness in a way that makes a difference. I then suggest that neglecting the development of rational agency cripples the force of the commitment to human freedom that drives the project of modernity. In calling attention …

The Nature Of Optimal Public Policy, Lok Sang Ho Jan 1998

The Nature Of Optimal Public Policy, Lok Sang Ho

Centre for Public Policy Studies : CPPS Working Paper Series

The design of public policy must take human nature as an immutable constraint, both with a view to choosing the appropriate policy objectives and in regard to the human response and hence the effects of the policy. Once human nature is seen in the proper light and the multiple needs of society are recognized, it is not difficult to see the logic of a hierarchy of policy objectives with some being treated as tentative constraints and others as “maximands." Optimal public policy making in the short term would treat those constraints as given but over the longer term the constraints …

Conventions, Centers, And Meetings: Analysis Of The Past Decade, George G. Fenich

Visions in Leisure and Business

The convention, exposition, and meetings industry (CEMI) is not static; it changes over time. This article investigates CEMI and the centers that host it have· changed over the past ten years. Aspects of the industry such as size, impact, and objectives are analyzed utilizing primary and secondary, data along with interviews with industry experts. One of the most significant findings is that, in spite of pundit's warnings, the industry has not reached saturation, and there is no sign that it will in the near future.

A Convention Knowledge Based System: An Expert System Approach, Kuan-Chou Chen

Visions in Leisure and Business

Expert systems are being used in a variety way. Convention management professionals have yet to embrace this computing trend. In order to gain access to this set of problem solving tools, a review of expert system fundamentals is in order. There are a range of methods for building expert system on micro- computers. Development tools such as expert system shells provide a knowledge engineering environment that facilitates system building by non-specialists. Shells offer a variety of knowledge representations and control strategies that suit various classes of problem solving tasks. System building fundamentals and knowledge representations are reviewed as a precursor …

An Investigation Of Selected Factors On Golfer Attachment, James F. Petrick, Sheila J. Backman, Robert D. Bixler Jan 1998

An Investigation Of Selected Factors On Golfer Attachment, James F. Petrick, Sheila J. Backman, Robert D. Bixler

Visions in Leisure and Business

While little change has occurred in the total number of golfers in the United States, the total number of golf courses is rapidly increasing (3). This increase in market competition has made it vital for resort owners and managers to examine the variables which influence golfers to use and return to their facilities. A relationship that appears to form between golfers and golf courses which has been neglected is place attachment. The purpose of this study was to examine whether or not place attachment actually occurs on a golf course. A second purpose was to investigate the relationship between attachment …

A Qualitative Analysis Of The Decision Making Process For Selecting Travel As A "Value-Added" Incentive, Stuart Cottrell, Kelly Bricker, Deborah Kerstetter, Peter Verhoven

Visions in Leisure and Business

The purpose of this study, using a qualitative method, was to explore and identify key factors in the decision-making process that led business owners/managers to select an advertising program which included travel as a "value-added" marketing incentive. During September-November 1996, a California based adventure travel company organized two incentive travel experiences to Fiji and Kenya for radio stations in San Francisco, CA and Detroit, MI. Results indicate that a program to a unique exotic destination is a factor worth considering. Other key factors derived included safety traveling within a group, reputation of the radio station, expectation for the type of …

Visions For South African Sport Tourism, Kamilla Swart Jan 1998

Visions For South African Sport Tourism, Kamilla Swart

Visions in Leisure and Business

Sport tourism is a segment of the tourism industry which is growing rapidly. In South Africa it is slowly being recognized as an important niche market within the tourism sector. In order to capitalize on the country's recent sporting successes, South Africa Sports Tourism (SAST) was launched by the government in 1997. This article will review the development of sport tourism in postapartheid South Africa by giving a brief description of the SAST initiative. It will further describe various issues, such as community involvement, private sector involvement, integration of sport and tourism bodies, and education and research, which must be …

Service Delivery At Sport Fishing Tourist Destinations, Russell Currie, John Colton

Visions in Leisure and Business

This study examines the difference between sport tourists individuals' perceptions of the services that should be offered to the services that were actually offered, using a sport fishing destination as a case study. The Servqual scale, a means in which to evaluate consumers' expectations and cross-reference them with their perceptions of that service, was utilized. A total of 31 surveys was returned out of the 60 sent. From the statistical analysis, overall customers' expectations of the services offered were similar to what was received, however when individual variables were examined some discrepancies were found. Future research for sport tourist destinations …

Boundaries As Barriers And Promoters: Constructing The Tourist Landscapes Of Finnish Karelia, Anssi Paasi, Petri J. Raivo

Visions in Leisure and Business

Boundaries have become significant foci of interdisciplinary research during the last decade, but their roles have not been discussed very often in the context of tourism which, in fact, is crucially linked with many contemporary tendencies such as the opening of borders between formerly closed realms of the world or flows of capital and people. This paper analyses the historical and geographical roles of the FinnishRussian border in relation to tourism. The border was strictly guarded and almost entirely closed in Soviet times. It was a taboo that interested many foreign visitors to Finland. It interested the Finns as well, …
