Environmental Assessment For The Designation Of The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Land Management
Environmental Assessment For The Designation Of The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Land Management
Environmental Assessments (WY)
On October 2, 1968, Congress passed the National Trails System Act. This Act called for the establishment of a system of national scenic trails "which will be extended trails so located as to provide for maximum outdoor recreation potential and for the conservation and enjoyment of the nationally significant scenic, historic, natural, or cultural qualities of the areas through which such trails may pass." As a result of the 1978 amendment to this Act, Congress designated the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (CDNST) as part of the National Scenic Trail system. The CDNST is a trail route traversing the length …

Many biological systems have multiple fluorophores that experience multiple depolarizing motions, requiring multiple lifetimes and correlation times to define the fluorescence intensity and anisotropy decays, respectively. To simplify analyses, an assumption often made is that all fluorophores experience all depolarizing motions. However, this assumption usually is invalid, because each lifetime is not necessarily associated with each correlation time. To help establish the correct associations and recover accurate kinetic parameters, a general kinetic scheme that can examine all possible associations is presented. Using synthetic data sets, the ability of the scheme to discriminate among all nine association models possible for two …

This study describes the first isolation and characterization of spontaneous mutants conferring natural resistance to an antibiotic for any Bartonella species. The Bartonella bacilliformis gyrB gene, which encodes the B subunit of DNA gyrase, was cloned and sequenced. The gyrB open reading frame (ORF) is 2,079 bp and encodes a deduced amino acid sequence of 692 residues, corresponding to a predicted protein of similar to 77.5 kDa. Sequence alignment indicates that B. bacilliformis GyrB is most similar to the GyrB protein from Bacillus subtilis (40.1% amino acid sequence identity) and that it contains the longest N-terminal tail (52 residues) of …

Strong Economic Advances In 1998 Followed By Slower Growth In 1999 And 2000, John Austin, Nebraska Business Forecast Council
Business in Nebraska
As data accumulate, it becomes more apparent 1998 will be recorded as a year of strong or-,\nnrnic growth in the nonfarm sector. Total nonfarm employment will advance 2.8 percent in 1998. Led by gains in wages and salaries, Nebraska's total nonfarm personal income will advance 6.2 percent in 1998, just under the pace set in 1997. Net taxable retail sales will increase by 6.8 percent in 1998, led by advances in motor vehicle sales (Figure 1). Growth will slow in 1999 and 2000, largely due to labor shortages and a weakened farm sector.
Nebraska's farm sector currently is suffering from …

Parity nonconservation was studied for 23 p-wave resonances in 113Cd up to En=500eV at the LANSCE pulsed neutron source using a longitudinally polarized neutron beam and the time-of-flight method. The helicity dependence of the total neutron capture cross section was measured with an enriched 113Cd target and with a target of natural cadmium. Parity violating effects were observed for several resonances in 113Cd and 111Cd. A root-mean-square value of the parity nonconserving matrix element MJ=1=2.9-0.9+1.3meV was obtained for the spin J=1 levels in the compound nucleus 114Cd. This …

Site Visit To Southern California — Plans And Providers: Risk, Accountability, And Staying Power, Lisa Sprague
National Health Policy Forum
This site visit was the second of two focused on managed care operations and market dynamics in California, a state notable for high HMO market penetration and intense competition. In southern California, large physician groups and independent practice associations were highly visible and influential. They had assumed significant financial risk and care management responsibility for patients in HMO plans. The result was a distinctly different model of managed care than existed in other regions of the country. The visit included meetings with leaders from physician organizations and managed care organizations in San Diego and Orange counties, as well as an …

Driving Into the Twenty-First Century: Technology Solutions to Transportation Problems is the transcript of a symposium held on November 16, 1998. The symposium was sponsored by the Norman Y. Mineta International Institute for Surface Transportation Policy Studies, the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group, Hewlett-Packard and Lockheed Martin. Numerous industry leaders and innovators were invited to participate in the open forum, and several vendors of electric and alternative power vehicles were on hand for participants to view and test drive. Topics of discussion included new technologies which will make commute times more pleasant for the 21st century worker. These possibilities include high-tech …
