This study attempted to further previous research by using an alternative measure of self-esteem. Undergraduate female students (under the legal drinking age of 21) were randomly selected from Introductory Psychology classes at a midwestern university. Sewing The Seeds Of Passion: A Study On Effectively Communicating Vision In A Volunteer Based Non Profit Organization, John R. Miller

Theses

This thesis will focus on the study of modem nonprofit organization and the crucial role which leader hip and vision play in fueling these organizations.

Recent literature. written both specifically about nonprofit and about corporate culture in the general business world. suggests that there is a direct correlation between the strength of leadership al the executive and board levels, and the degree to which volunteers and paid staff will "buy-in" to the philosophy and work of the nonprofit . And because of the nature of the nonprofit business, that is, that it exists "for the public good" as opposed to …

The Mental Approach To The Game Of Baseball: A Handbook For The Player/Coach, Timothy P. Nihart Jan 1998

The Mental Approach To The Game Of Baseball: A Handbook For The Player/Coach, Timothy P. Nihart

Theses

This thesis will focus on the mental attitude required to succeed in athletics, in particular baseball. Stressing the link between the mind and the body, this paper intends to make practical applications for both coaches and players.

Research as shown that in communication information is transmitted through two primary inconsistent and unbalanced methods: content and emotions . Due to the often interaction of coaches in communicating with their players, there is a large margin of error, lost information, from the transmission by the coaches to the reception by the players. It 1s necessary, thus, to explore the link between the …

The Effects Of Self-Esteem On Reading And Math Achievement In Third And Fifth Grade Students, Carol Ann Beatty Jan 1998

The Effects Of Self-Esteem On Reading And Math Achievement In Third And Fifth Grade Students, Carol Ann Beatty

Theses

This study examined whether self-esteem had a significant effect on reading and math achievement. Data were collected from 90 third and fifth grade students in a Midwestern, suburban elementary school. Results of a self-esteem test (Piers-Harris Children's Self-concept Scale) were correlated to standardized reading and math test scores (Missouri Mastery and Achievement Test, MMA T). The results indicated a direct correlation. The variation in the level of self-esteem scores suggests a parallel relationship with reading and math achievement scores. The direct correlation demonstrates if one score (self-esteem) is high, then the other score (reading or math) will more than likely …

Predictors Of Self-Perceptions Of Behavioral Competence, Self-Esteem, And Willingness To Communicate: A Study Assessing Impact In A Basic Interpersonal Communication Course, Sherwyn P. Morreale, Michael Z. Hackman, Michael R. Neer

Basic Communication Course Annual

Considering the emergent role of evaluation in higher education, it is important that assessment procedures be developed for all communication courses. Courses such as public speaking already have well established assessment programs while other courses are in need of additional attention. This article describes an assessment program that examines the impact of an interpersonal course on undergraduates' self-perceived behavioral and affective competence. Using a pre- and post-test model, assessment was based on administration of the Communication Behaviors Inventory, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and the Willingness to Communicate Scale. These outcomes were measured as a function of gender, age, and ethnicity. …

Learning Style Preferences And Academic Achievement Within The Basic Communication Course, Charles A. Lubbers, William J. Seiler Jan 1998

Learning Style Preferences And Academic Achievement Within The Basic Communication Course, Charles A. Lubbers, William J. Seiler

Basic Communication Course Annual

Students enrolled in a basic communication course taught using the personalized system of instruction (PSI) were studied to determine the influence of learning style preferences on academic achievement. The twenty measures of the Canfield Learning Style Inventory (CLSI) were regressed with three measures of student academic achievement. Eight of the twenty were significant in at least one of the three equations. Two of the learning style measures (class organization and performance expectations) were significant with all three measures of achievement. Two applications of the findings for basic course instructors are presented.

Applying Multiple Intelligences Theory To The Basic Public Speaking Course, Kristi A. Schaller, Marybeth G. Callison Jan 1998

Applying Multiple Intelligences Theory To The Basic Public Speaking Course, Kristi A. Schaller, Marybeth G. Callison

Basic Communication Course Annual

This article examines the theory of Multiple Intelligences (MI) (Gardner, 1983; 1993) as it applies to the basic public speaking course. According to MI theory, intelligence is not a single dimension but is a composite of several aptitudes and talents. Gardner believes that individuals possess more than one intelligence, and MI theory defines seven. We argue that the basic public speaking course is an excellent forum for addressing students’ multiple intelligences while teaching oral and written communication skills. This paper introduces MI theory and provides suggested course assignments and activities that correspond with the multiple intelligences.

Delineating The Uses Of Practical Theory: A Reply To Hickson, Shawn Spano Jan 1998

Delineating The Uses Of Practical Theory: A Reply To Hickson, Shawn Spano

Basic Communication Course Annual

Let me begin by thanking Professor Hickson for his comments on the article I published in the 1996 issue of the Basic Communication Course Annual (Hickson, 1996; Spano, 1996). I consider it a compliment that my ideas about practical theory interested him enough to write a rejoinder. More importantly, Hickson’s response provides us with an opportunity to “continue the conversation” on the role of theory in the basic course. It might be useful here to provide some background on how this conversation started.

In 1995 I presented a paper on practical theory on a SCA program sponsored by the Basic …

Commentary: The Research Foundation For Instruction In The Beginning Public Speaking Course, Lawrence W. Hugenberg, Barbara S. Moyer Jan 1998

Commentary: The Research Foundation For Instruction In The Beginning Public Speaking Course, Lawrence W. Hugenberg, Barbara S. Moyer

Basic Communication Course Annual

The history of public speaking instruction is rooted in classical rhetorical theories. There is a lack of recent communication research findings cited in textbooks to support instruction in the beginning public speaking course. This research examined five leading public speaking texts in the hopes of finding contemporary communication research findings to support the advice given to students. This survey reveals little research being cited in beginning public speaking texts. The authors conclude with a discussion of reasons why research is not cited and offer communication scholars a challenge to conduct research to support pedagogical claims.

Evaluating Stress In Calves Weaned At Three Different Ages, Andrea Bueno, Todd Cappel, Chuck Story, Richard J. Rasby, Edd Clemens, Mark Dragastin

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Trials were conducted to evaluate the effects of weaning calves at 150, 210 and 270 days of age (i.e. August, October and December, respectively). A total of 75 Angus x MARC II heifers calves were used in this study. Heifers were bled on the day of weaning and again at 2, 7, 14 and 28 days after weaning. Blood was analyzed for differential WBC, cortisol, T3 and glucose. Weight changes were recorded. The data suggests October weaned calves (210 days) had both greater blood cortisol and glucose at days 7, 14 and 28 post-weaning and greater weight gains when …

Reaching Beyond The Bars: An Analysis Of Prison Nurseries, Nicole Mauskopf Jan 1998

Reaching Beyond The Bars: An Analysis Of Prison Nurseries, Nicole Mauskopf

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note argues that prison nurseries offer a viable solution to the challenges faced by incarcerated mothers and their children, addressing the detrimental effects of separation on both. It advocates for the implementation of prison nurseries to support maternal care and rehabilitation, while also highlighting the need for legal and policy reforms to ensure equitable treatment and protect parental rights.

Neonaticide And The "Ethos Of Maternity": Traditional Criminal Law Defenses And The Novel Syndrome, Judith E. Macfarlane Jan 1998

Neonaticide And The "Ethos Of Maternity": Traditional Criminal Law Defenses And The Novel Syndrome, Judith E. Macfarlane

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note explores the legal and psychological dimensions of neonaticide, proposing the recognition of a Neonaticide Syndrome to better understand the mental state of perpetrators and inform legal defenses. It argues that such a syndrome, characterized by denial of pregnancy and psychotic breaks, could provide a framework for lenient sentencing and negate intent in homicide charges, similar to how Rape Trauma Syndrome and Battered Woman Syndrome are used in court. The analysis emphasizes the need for expert testimony to explain the mental state of defendants and the admissibility of such evidence under Frye and Daubert standards.

Women And Assisted Suicide: Exposing The Gender Vulnerability To Acquiescent Death, Lynne Marie Kohm, Britney N. Brigner Jan 1998

Women And Assisted Suicide: Exposing The Gender Vulnerability To Acquiescent Death, Lynne Marie Kohm, Britney N. Brigner

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that women are disproportionately vulnerable to assisted suicide due to societal, economic, and emotional factors, and that legalizing assisted suicide could exacerbate gender disparities in death rates. It critiques the lack of protections for vulnerable individuals, particularly women, who may be coerced or influenced into assisted suicide. The analysis emphasizes the need to address the root causes of suffering rather than resorting to assisted suicide, while also advocating for societal changes to support women and reduce their vulnerability.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg And The Virginia Military Institute: A Culmination Of Strategic Success, Scott M. Smiler Jan 1998

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg And The Virginia Military Institute: A Culmination Of Strategic Success, Scott M. Smiler

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The note examines Justice Ginsburg's pivotal role in shaping the Supreme Court's approach to gender-based discrimination, particularly through her advocacy for heightened scrutiny of such classifications. It highlights how her efforts culminated in the landmark decision of United States v. Virginia, where the Court ruled that Virginia Military Institute's (VMI) exclusion of women violated the Equal Protection Clause. The decision reinforced the requirement that gender-based classifications must meet an exceedingly persuasive justification, aligning with Ginsburg's long-standing commitment to dismantling gender stereotypes and advancing equal protection principles.

Review Of 'Artificial Legal Intelligence', Stephen M. Mcjohn Jan 1998

Review Of 'Artificial Legal Intelligence', Stephen M. Mcjohn

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

Artificial Legal Intelligence, by Pamela Gray, presents a thought-provoking approach to both computational models of legal reasoning and the use of evolutionary thinking about the law. Drawing on a prodigious amount of research, the book looks beyond the rather technical approach common in the field and attempts to place artificial legal intelligence within the broad structure of legal history. This paper first summarizes the book's vision of a computerized artificial legal intelligence, a vision of developments in both technology and legal history. The paper discusses how this fits with trends in both artificial intelligence and legal theory. The paper further …
