Parent As Participant Or Outsider : Establishing Positive Relations Between Schools And All Families, Amy Keller Sandvold Jan 1998

Parent As Participant Or Outsider : Establishing Positive Relations Between Schools And All Families, Amy Keller Sandvold

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this review is to help elementary school educators to gain important information which may help them build positive relations with all parents. This review will not address special education teachers and programs directly, because of the particular case of federally mandated roles for parents working with educators, for which preservice special education teachers receive training. Likewise, national standards for preparation of early childhood educators provide for training in working with families of young children. This review is designed for elementary educators who do not have backgrounds in early childhood nor special education, although information cited might apply …

Graduate Research Papers

This paper is intended for professional school psychologists, school social workers, consultants in special education and other professionals involved in assessment issues in the schools. It is necessary for school professionals to have an understanding of the general socio-political context which surrounds the issues involved in language and culture to better assess the mental/cognitive abilities of language minority students through the dominant language and culture.

It is beyond the scope of this paper to present such issues in their entirety. Therefore, the focus of this paper will center on "voluntary minorities", specifically those who are learning English as a second …

Interventions For Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Justin M. Larson

Graduate Research Papers

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) continues to be widely studied within the literature and researchers continue to investigate interventions and environments which allow for success. Whalen and Renker (1991) argue that multiple intervention methods are needed for success of children and adolescents in social situations. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature, and review interventions used to facilitate appropriate behaviors in children, aged six to eleven, with a diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Images Of Mary: Effects Of Style And Content On Reactions To Marian Art, Donald J. Polzella, Johann G. Roten S.M., Christopher W. Parker

Psychology Faculty Publications

105 college students rated digitized facsimiles of works of art depicting the Virgin Mary, which varied in style (Pre-Renaissance versus Renaissance and Post-Renaissance) and content (depictions of events versus devotional images). Viewer reactions were affected strongly by style, content, and their interaction. For example, the newer style was perceived to have greater power and clarity than the older style, and this effect was greater for event depictions than for devotional images. Other findings included differences in reactions between men and women.

Representation And Intention: Wittgenstein On What Makes A Picture Of A Target, Mark E. Weber Jan 1998

Representation And Intention: Wittgenstein On What Makes A Picture Of A Target, Mark E. Weber

Philosophy, Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Throughout his later philosophy, Wittgenstein repeatedly asks the following: ”What makes my image of him into an image of him?” (LW1 308).’ “What makes this picture his picture?” (LW1 309). He takes this same question to apply to linguistic utterances: “Isn’t my question like this: ‘What makes this sentence a sentence that has to do with him?’” (LW1 308). This is by no means a peripheral concern of Wittgenstein’s, and in Philosophical Grammar (62), where he first phrases this question, he pronounces: “That’s him (this picture represents him --that contains the whole problem of representation.”

This essay will explore Wittgenstein’s …

Another Weapon For Combating Family Violence: Prevention Of Animal Abuse, Charlotte Lacroix

Animal Law Review

Dr. Lacroix discusses the correlation between different forms of family violence and suggests that family pets are just another victim. Dr. Lacroix proposes that stronger animal anticruelty laws may be part of the solution to reducing family violence because they enhance the likelihood of detection of an offender's abusive behavior.

Recovery Of Common Law Damages For Emotional Distress, Loss Of Society, And Loss Of Companionship For The Wrongful Death Of A Companion Animal, Steven M. Wise Jan 1998

Recovery Of Common Law Damages For Emotional Distress, Loss Of Society, And Loss Of Companionship For The Wrongful Death Of A Companion Animal, Steven M. Wise

Animal Law Review

Mr. Wise analyzes experiential recognition of the bond that exists between human companions and companion animals in the context of possible recovery of tort damages for the wrongful death of a companion animal. He demonstrates that companion animals are often seen by their human companions as members of the family (holding much the same status as children). He discusses historical aspects of the common law as they relate to current tort law in such cases and examines the tension that exists between principle and policy.

Can Nonhuman Animals Find Tort Protection In A Human-Centered Common Law?, Enger Mccartney-Smith Jan 1998

Can Nonhuman Animals Find Tort Protection In A Human-Centered Common Law?, Enger Mccartney-Smith

Animal Law Review

Section 870 of the Restatement (Second) of Torts provides a method by which a court might extend private intentional tort rights to nonhuman animal plaintiffs. Given our current scientific and experiential understanding of many species, combined with existing court procedures to ease administrability, such an extension of tort law is mandated.

Risk Regulation And The "Faces" Of Uncertainty, Vern R. Walker Jan 1998

Risk Regulation And The "Faces" Of Uncertainty, Vern R. Walker

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

The problem of "decision making in the face of uncertainty" is how to regulate on the basis of incomplete information that has significant potential to be inaccurate. My primary goal is to clarify some aspects of such decision-making through surveying types of uncertainty inherent in information. I present a taxonomy for kinds of inherent uncertainty - a classification and description of the "faces"of uncertainty. A second goal is to identify which kinds of uncertainty can and cannot now be measured quantitatively.

A contextual assumption is that we need to evaluate decision rules for dealing with faces of uncertainty. As a …

The Effects Of College-Level Student-Instructor Interaction On Student Performance During Computer-Based Training, Rachel R. Mccullough Jan 1998

The Effects Of College-Level Student-Instructor Interaction On Student Performance During Computer-Based Training, Rachel R. Mccullough

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of student-instructor interaction on college student's performance of CBT. The experimental groups of students utilized the CBT program, PageMaker 6.5 (Adobe Corporation), focusing on the setting tabs instruction (Appendix A) featured in the help menu. The treatment group received high interaction between the student and the instructor. The other group utilized the same curriculum and CBT program as the treatment group. There was low student-instructor interaction for this control group. The researcher then compared the effect of interaction received by each group, on the student performance, which was measured by …

Value Funds Versus Growth Funds: An Examination Of Actual Differences In Price-To-Earnings And Price-To-Book Ratios, Christine Giovannelli Jan 1998

Value Funds Versus Growth Funds: An Examination Of Actual Differences In Price-To-Earnings And Price-To-Book Ratios, Christine Giovannelli

Honors Capstones

In recent years the Growth and Value fund investment objectives have received a great deal of attention. The growth style is typically associated with a high price-to-book ratio and a high price-to-earnings ratio while the value style describes funds with low price-to-book value ratios and low price-to-earnings ratios. For purposes of this study, a growth fund is defined as a fund with the term "growth" in its name, and a value fund is defined by the term "value" in its name. This study examines whether in aggregate or as individuals, the funds remain true to the said characteristics. It also …

Observation Of Instruction Via Distance Learning: The Need For A New Evaluation Paradigm, Bobby G. Malone, Loren D. Malm, Fred W. Nay, Brad E. Oliver, Nancy G. Saunders, Jay C. Thompson Jr. Jan 1998

Observation Of Instruction Via Distance Learning: The Need For A New Evaluation Paradigm, Bobby G. Malone, Loren D. Malm, Fred W. Nay, Brad E. Oliver, Nancy G. Saunders, Jay C. Thompson Jr.

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Technology as a tool used to enhance instruction must be viewed in its proper perspective. Instruction via distance learning is an excellent example. Instruction must be appropriate for the intended audience, and must be observed and evaluated within the expectations of criteria used for evaluating effective teaching. Traditional criteria may be appropriate for evaluating regular classroom instruction, but not appropriate for distance learning instruction. Criteria such as “wait time and questioning techniques,” are well documented, but were derived through tedious observation and recordings of repetitive behaviors within a regular classroom. As an administrator or evaluator observes in a classroom where …
