Grade Retention: A History Of Failure, William A. Owings, Susan Magliaro Jan 1998

Grade Retention: A History Of Failure, William A. Owings, Susan Magliaro

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

Although almost 50 years of research has shown that grade-level retention affords no academic advantages to students, this practice is gaining increasing attention as schools face political pressure to be accountable for student achievement. The negative effect that retention has on children is ignored in favor of an overly simplistic view of it as a panacea for education woes. In an attempt to better meet student needs, educators historically have seen retention as a way to reduce skill variance in the classroom. However, this practice has not achieved its objective. An at-risk population is cognitively and affectively harmed by retention. …

Is There A Link Between Hardiness And Burnout In Critical Care Nurses?, Cindy Bilisko

Masters Theses

Hardiness is a set of personality characteristics that function as a resource in coping with stress. Hardiness has been linked with less burnout among various groups. This study was done to determine if there was a relationship between hardiness and the incidence of burnout in critical care nurses. A descriptive correlational design was used to examine this relationship. Critical care nurses at three hospitals in the Grand Rapids area were surveyed using the Staff Burnout Scale for Health Professionals, the Cognitive Hardiness Scale, and a demographics questionnaire. Data were tested using Pearson’s correlation and simple regression. The hypothesis “hardiness in …

Investment Decisions By Individuals And Groups In 'Sunk Cost' Situations: The Potential Impact Of Shared Representations, Christine M. Smith, R. S. Tindale, Linda Steiner

Peer Reviewed Articles

Past research has shown that individuals prefer to continue investing resources into a failing endeavor once a considerable investment has been made, even when abandoning the project would be more rational economically. This phenomenon has been labeled the sunk cost effect (Arkes & Blumer, 1985). Since investment decisions are often made by groups, we compared individual and group propensities for falling prey to the sunk cost effect. we also varied whether or not individuals and groups needed to justify their investment decision to a superior. Both individuals and groups showed the sunk cost effect. Group process analyses showed that error-prone …

Eve And The Creation Cycle: Christina Rossetti's Reaction To John Milton's "Paradise Lost", Melanie Ann Hanson Jan 1998

Eve And The Creation Cycle: Christina Rossetti's Reaction To John Milton's "Paradise Lost", Melanie Ann Hanson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Christina Rossetti's poetry is concerned with the image of woman as a creator and as a redeemer, the woman who has fallen from innocence and whose innocence is restored through participation in the creation/redemption cycle. Rossetti's writing reflects her personal experiences, her love of Dante's works, her interest in the Anglican sisterhood, her own Tractarian obsession, the influence of her association with the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood, and most specifically, her reaction to Milton's depiction of Eve in Paradise Lost. She reconstructs Milton's Eve in her own poetry. This treatise will examine a selection of poetry by Christina Rossetti, in specific her …

Prediction Of Maximum Oxygen Uptake From A Modified Ymca 3-Minute Step Test, Antonio Saraiva Santo

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The relationship between post exercise recovery heart rate (PERHR) and maximum oxygen uptake using a height specific bench with a modified Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) 3-Minute Step Test was investigated. Sixty apparently healthy males and females between the ages of 18 and 55 years stepped on a height specific bench for 3 minutes in order to obtain their 1-minute and 15-second post exercise recovery heart rates. An EKG monitored post exercise recovery heart rates. Maximum oxygen uptake was measured by open circuit spirometry on a motor-driven treadmill. Correlation and regression statistics were used to analyze the data. Results indicate …

Where All The Children Are Above Average: A Meta Analysis Of The Performance Appraisal Purpose Affect, J. Jawahar, Chuck R. Williams Jan 1998

Where All The Children Are Above Average: A Meta Analysis Of The Performance Appraisal Purpose Affect, J. Jawahar, Chuck R. Williams

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

More than 40 years ago, Taylor and Wherry (1951) hypothesized that performance appraisal ratings obtained for administrative purposes, such as pay raises or promotions, would be more lenient than ratings obtained for research, feedback, or employee development purposes. However, research on appraisal purpose has yielded inconsistent results, with roughly half of such studies supporting this hypothesis and the other half refuting it. To account for those differences, a meta-analysis of performance appraisal purpose research was conducted with 22 studies and a total sample size of 57,775. Our results support Taylor and Wherry's hypothesis as performance evaluations obtained for administrative purposes …
