Performance-Based Standards For Juvenile Corrections, Doris Layton Mackenzie, Gaylene Armstrong, Angela R. Grover
Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications
Total quality management (TQM) has revolutionized business, and some of its components can be applied to corrections. The importance of information for developing performance-based standards is obvious. Much more difficult is the process of deciding what information to obtain and how to use it. In the area of juvenile corrections, information about the conditions or environments of juvenile facilities and how these conditions are associated with intermediate and longterm outcomes will be invaluable in developing performance-based standards.

Gendered Landscapes Synergism Of Place And Person In Canadian Prairie Drama, Anne F. Nothof
Gendered Landscapes Synergism Of Place And Person In Canadian Prairie Drama, Anne F. Nothof
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
In an attempt to realize the relationship of character and landscape, recent Canadian Prairie drama has moved beyond the confines of theatrical space through a metaphysical evocation of place and time. The prairies are configured as an imaginative projection of the human psyche, expressed through images that are themselves a reflection of an interaction of human and elemental forces. In the works of three women playwrights in particular Gwen Pharis Ringwood's Mirage, Sharon Pollock's Generations, and Connie Gault's Sky and The Soft Eclipse, character has metonymic resonance: it is contiguous with place and time. The relationship with …
Review Of The Making Of Sacagawea: A Euro-American Legend By Donna}. Kessler, Gary E. Moulton
Review Of The Making Of Sacagawea: A Euro-American Legend By Donna}. Kessler, Gary E. Moulton
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
The basis for this book is a good idea: to discover the factors that have made Sacagawea a legend and then examine the ways in which the legend has evolved. Indeed, the author has done an excellent job in tracing Sacagawea's changing image, but a series of missteps detract from her laudable intent. The book suffers from repetitiveness, questionable literary devices, and lengthy accounts of the obvious. Squeezing out the superfluous would have yielded a sturdier essay of appropriate proportions.
Sacagawea may be the best known member of the Corps of Discovery after Lewis and Clark. Although she served in …

Privatization Of Social Security: Misguided Reform, Kathryn L. Moore
Privatization Of Social Security: Misguided Reform, Kathryn L. Moore
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This article begins by briefly describing the social security program. It then discusses the reasons for social security's widespread popularity and its impending funding crisis. The article goes on to briefly describe some of the pending privatization proposals. The article concludes by discussing the practical and theoretical problems with privatizing social security. Specifically, it describes the investment risk participants face under a privatized system and the transition problems created by converting to such a system. Finally, this article explains why the privatization proposals promote misguided paternalism and misconceive the role social security should play in our national retirement system.

Against Common Sense: Why Title Vii Should. Protect Speakers Of Black English, Jill Gaulding
Against Common Sense: Why Title Vii Should. Protect Speakers Of Black English, Jill Gaulding
University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform
The speech of many black Americans is marked by phrases such as 'we be writin"' or "we don't have no problems." Because most listeners consider such "Black English" speech patterns incorrect, these speakers face significant disadvantages in the job market. But common sense suggests that there is nothing discriminatory about employers' negative reactions to Black English because it makes sense to allow employers to insist that employees use correct grammar.
This article argues against this common sense understanding of Black English as bad grammar. The author first analyzes the extent of the job market disadvantages faced by Black English speakers …

Interreligious Friendship: A New Theological Virtue, James L. Fredericks
Interreligious Friendship: A New Theological Virtue, James L. Fredericks
Theological Studies Faculty Works
Today, in an effort to respond to their religiously pluralistic situation, Christians should recognize friendships with non-Christians as a theological virtue. The first section of this essay reviews some of the recent discussion of virtue theory, noting that virtues are enduring aspects of character that incorporate values and skills, have histories, and often act as correctives to vices. The second section reflects on friendship as a virtue, using Aristotle, Sartre, and Levinas, among others. The third section discusses interreligious friendship in particular as an example of a human excellence, a new virtue that incorporates values and skills and helps Christians …
