Adult Childrens' Communication And Closeness With Parents, Diana Decuir Apr 1998

Adult Childrens' Communication And Closeness With Parents, Diana Decuir

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This writer reviews some of the most influential factors found in studies of adult childparent relationships, including divorce, surrogate parents, coresidency, caregiving, proximity, family size, and gender. Focusing on the "feminine tilt" in family relationships, research reveals explanations such as caregiving, kinkeeping, and gender identity issues. The author proposes the possibility that the female bias in parent-child relationships has more to do with subjective thought process than biological sex. An analysis was conducted on mailed-in-surveys for 264 Kentucky adults, ages 30 to 49, who completed questions pertaining to their communication and closeness with their parents, and one fourth of the …

Storybook Reading And The Speech Language Pathologist: A Fundamental Partnership For Speech And Language Intervention, Angela Crume Apr 1998

Storybook Reading And The Speech Language Pathologist: A Fundamental Partnership For Speech And Language Intervention, Angela Crume

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Because of the relationship between speech and language delays and reading difficulties, speech-language pathologists should be encouraged to include elements of reading in their therapy with preschoolers. By using such activities, speech-language pathologists should observe an increase in the language and speech abilities of their clients, regardless of the children's present abilities. Reading can be included in the context of therapy in various ways, but the most efficient way is to design thematic units with correlated prereading and postreading activities.

Violence-Prevention Education For The Primary Classroom, Carrie Shaw Apr 1998

Violence-Prevention Education For The Primary Classroom, Carrie Shaw

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This holistic curriculum addresses the many realms in which violence affects children: cognitive, affective, social, and behavioral. A violence prevention thematic unit containing lesson plans, performance tasks, and learning centers has been built around six research-based interlocking components: understanding violence, identifying and expressing emotions, valuing peace, feeling a sense of community, being safe, and resolving conflicts nonviolently. The goal is that through beginning to teach practical violence prevention skills in these six areas in the primary grades (K-3), children will learn how to handle their aggressions and resolve conflicts without the use of violence.

A Critical Evaluation Of Prof. Roberto Unger's Legal Theory, Pavan K Mamidi Apr 1998

A Critical Evaluation Of Prof. Roberto Unger's Legal Theory, Pavan K Mamidi

Working Papers

There are two general parts to this paper. In the first part I wish to raise some questions relating to Prof. Unger's very general claim about the contingency of knowledge to formative empirical contexts. This part will be my attempt to place in perspective the specific points w.hich I wish to dispute with Prof. Unger. In the second p.art I wish to deal with the balance where I agree with him almost completely. The parts where I beg to differ with Prof. Unger do not prevent me from accepting his call forprogrammatic argument, and yet attend upon those parts of …

Dynamics Of Wholesale Bid-Ask Spreads In Vertical Markets, Hari Krishnan Nagarajan, Raghbendra Jha Apr 1998

Dynamics Of Wholesale Bid-Ask Spreads In Vertical Markets, Hari Krishnan Nagarajan, Raghbendra Jha

Working Papers

This paper investigates the short run efficiency of wholesale markets within the context of vertical markets. We propose a partial adjustment model to examine the dynamics of the wholesale bid-ask spread and detennine whether this has any impact on hoarding at the wholesale level. The dynamics of Bid-Ask spread is then endogenised in a general model of price transmission at the retail level to determine the impact of such dynamics on a) price transmission and b) the extent of hoarding. Finally we test this generalized model against the extant models of price transmission and show that the generalization \s more …

How Does A Principal Use Kentucky's High Stakes Assessment To Monitor And Improve Student Learning?, Ora Cobb Jr, Jane Clark Lindle, James S. Rinehart Apr 1998

How Does A Principal Use Kentucky's High Stakes Assessment To Monitor And Improve Student Learning?, Ora Cobb Jr, Jane Clark Lindle, James S. Rinehart

Publications

This paper explores Kentucky's Education Reform Act (KERA) for improving at-risk students' scores to see if the strategies in one middle school improved standardized and state-performance-based assessment results. The study encompasses two purposes: to use a forced-entry regression model to detect which independent variables were predictors of success for "at-risk" students on the Kentucky Instructional Results Information System (KIRIS), and to offer an analytic model for principals to use in examining the impact of specific school reform initiatives and selected intervention strategies. The paper offers a literature review that discusses Effective Schools research, explains the background for KERA and KIRIS, …

Emerging Issues With The Predictive Applications Of The Gre In Educational Administration Programs: One Doctoral Program's Experience, Jane Clark Lindle, James S. Rinehart Apr 1998

Emerging Issues With The Predictive Applications Of The Gre In Educational Administration Programs: One Doctoral Program's Experience, Jane Clark Lindle, James S. Rinehart

Publications

Little information exists as to the efficacy of using the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) as a predictor of success for nontraditional students' graduate studies. Since many students in doctoral education programs are nontraditional matriculants, an investigation of the relationship between GRE scores and student success in one such program is discussed. Records of 74 doctoral students enrolled in educational administration since 1992 were obtained to examine the independent variables. A questionnaire was used to collect faculty perceptions of student scholarship (potential) as the dependent variable. The results indicated three significant predictors of student scholarship potential: grade point average, analytic score …
