Equivocal Notions Of Accuracy And Genetic Screening Of The General Population, Kelly C. Smith May 1998

Equivocal Notions Of Accuracy And Genetic Screening Of The General Population, Kelly C. Smith

Publications

The explosive growth in genetic technology will quickly make possible an unprecedented number of tests for genetically based conditions. A necessary condition for the use of such tests without risk of harm to the patient is that they are “accurate”. However, most discussions of test accuracy in the literature have equivocated between two importantly different meanings of the word. In particular, it must be kept in mind that a high analytical accuracy does not imply a high diagnostic accuracy. Questions about the diagnostic accuracy of genetic tests loom large at present given our limited knowledge of the complex etiology of …

Effect Of Item Clarity And Probability Of Item Endorsement On Response Latencies On Personality Test Items, James R. Kinney May 1998

Effect Of Item Clarity And Probability Of Item Endorsement On Response Latencies On Personality Test Items, James R. Kinney

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, regression analysis was used to examine the affects of item clarity and probability of endorsement on response latencies of 60 undergraduates responding on personality test items from the Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16 Personality Factor test) (Cattell, Eber, & Tatsuoka, 1970, 5th Edition). Response latencies to personality test items, though frequently studied, have yet to be operationally utilized in the interpretation of personality tests. Forty-four items from the 16 Personality Factor test were selected. Each item from the original test was rated for clarity and matched with an emotionally neutral statement with an equivalent number of words. …

Managers Are Appointed, Leaders Emerge: How New Scientific Paradigms Inform Organizationel Leadership, Lew Beccone May 1998

Managers Are Appointed, Leaders Emerge: How New Scientific Paradigms Inform Organizationel Leadership, Lew Beccone

Theses and Graduate Projects

For most of the 20th century the mechanistic, linear world of Newtonian science has functioned both as metaphor for thinking about organizational dynamics and as the mental model around which organizations have developed. Recently, the postclassical sciences have yielded an alternate understanding of the world, one fundamentally different from that of the Newtonian model. This paper explores a world view emerging from complexity studies and quantum physics, contrasts it with the dominant image derived from classical physics, and draws implications for organizational leadership. The lens of postclassical science challenges our fundamental ontology and reframes our views of organizational life in …

The Problematics Of Moral And Legal Theory, Richard A. Posner May 1998

The Problematics Of Moral And Legal Theory, Richard A. Posner

Articles

In these Holmes Lectures, delivered a century after the publication of Oliver Wendell Holmes's great essay The Path of the Law, Judge Posner argues for an essentially Holmesian conception of the proper relations among modern normative moral philosophy ("academic moralism"), morality, and law. Academic moralism, he argues, lacks either the intellectual cogency or the emotional power to change people's beliefs or behavior; the power to do so resides in "moral entrepreneurs," which academic moralists emphatically are not. Academic moralism's lack of cogency disqualifies it to guide judicial decisionmaking even - in fact, especially - in cases involving controversial moral issues, …

The "Inevitable" Recall : A Historical, Psychological And Conflict Management Style Assessment Of The Leader-Follower Relationship Between Harry S. Truman And General Douglas Macarthur During The Korean War, Nicole G. Centanni

Honors Theses

From a leadership perspective the dysfunctional relationship between President Truman and General MacArthur throughout the Korean conflict serves as an explicit reminder of the importance in developing functional leader-follower relations in any given context. Based on a general historical account of the Korean War up to the point of MacArthur's dismissal, this research will attempt to provide an understanding of the dysfunctional professional and personal relationships that existed between the President and the General. The focus of this research will begin by outlining all pertinent historical facts relating to the developing conflict between Truman and MacArthur during the Korean War. …

Refeeding Syndrome, Christina H. Sperry

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Refeeding syndrome is a syndrome of electrolyte abnormalities, which occurs in patients who are fed orally, enterally, or parenterally (1). Patients at high risk of getting refeeding syndrome include people with chronic malnutrition-underfeeding, classic kwashiorkor, classic marasmus, anorexia nervosa, chronic alcoholism, morbid obesity with massive weight loss, patients unfed in 7-10 days with evidence of stress and depletion, patients with prolonged fasting, and patients with prolonged intravenous hydration (1,2). Characteristics or complications of refeeding syndrome include congestive heart failure, hypercapnia, hyperglycemia, rebound hypoglycemia, hypophosphatemia, hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, and hypocalcemia. Prevention is the key in refeeding syndrome and it can be done …

Everything's Relative: The Theory Of Relativity's Influence On Early Twentieth-Century Thought, Shawna Jo Randall May 1998

Everything's Relative: The Theory Of Relativity's Influence On Early Twentieth-Century Thought, Shawna Jo Randall

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

In the early twentieth century Albert Einstein revolutionized humankind's understanding of the universe. Few scientific innovations have had as pervasive an impact as Einstein's Theory of Relativity. His conjectures accounted for scientific phenomena which were otherwise unexplained. With a set of abstract equations, he created unity and consistency among otherwise disconnected entities. He redefined the universe and transformed previous notions about space and time. For the scientific community the Theory of Relativity established a foundation for subsequent developments in physics. It is important to note, however, that the nonscientific community was also profoundly affected by Einstein's theory. Lay people did …

Childhood Choice Making Patterns As A Function Of Contingency Shaping Versus Instructional Control, Nathan Atkin Call May 1998

Childhood Choice Making Patterns As A Function Of Contingency Shaping Versus Instructional Control, Nathan Atkin Call

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The term contingency shaped refers to any response class governed by its direct consequences (Catania, 1973). In a theoretical paper on problem solving Skinner (1966) discriminated between contingency shaped and rule-governed behavior by stating that no matter how similar in form they may appear each have independent controlling variables and functional properties. In a later analysis (Skinner, 1974) he elaborated on rule-governed behavior by pointing out that one distinct form of rule-governed behavior is instruction following. An instructional episode, however, consists of more than any verbal or non-verbal statement of contingencies, but includes the consequences in question as well (Cerutti, …

A Parent's Guide To Assisting Learning Disabled Children At Home, Sandra Elaine Baker May 1998

A Parent's Guide To Assisting Learning Disabled Children At Home, Sandra Elaine Baker

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Our schools are overcrowded, teachers are spread too thin, and often children with learning disabilities are left alone to get by in school (Rosner, 1993). Many of them end up falling through the cracks in the floor by middle school. Learning disabilities are not manifest in physical ways necessarily and many times go unnoticed and/or untreated (Bloom, 1996). This can be very damaging to a child both in an academic sense and in an affective sense. Self-esteem is lowered and sometimes continued failure in one scholastic area can mean failure in other areas such as reading which in tum affects …

Treatment Of Nocturnal Enuresis In Four Male Adolescent Sex Offenders, Deloy Herman Johnson May 1998

Treatment Of Nocturnal Enuresis In Four Male Adolescent Sex Offenders, Deloy Herman Johnson

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Over the three months of this study, the subjects were detained 24 hours per day, every day at a residential center for sex offenders. Of the four subjects, three received medications for nocturnal enuresis while the other one received medication for hyperactive behavior. The time interval between nocturnal events increased for the recipients of sensitivity training. This study was a three-month study without follow up. The increased interval may be explained by two other confounds that were not measured: 1) the clients who had the longer intervals at the end of the study were also on medication, which possibly contributed …

Diego Rivera In The United States: "Working From Within The Enemy Camp", Sarahí Dehesa-Avelar May 1998

Diego Rivera In The United States: "Working From Within The Enemy Camp", Sarahí Dehesa-Avelar

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The most notorious twentieth-century Mexican artist and politician, Diego Rivera, stepped up to the international pedestal of art in the late 1920s. Recognized for his revival of mural painting and undeniable compositional skill, the middle-aged Rivera was crowned a Michelangelo of modern art by artists, intellectuals, and admirers of the time. When Rivera traveled to the United States to show off his peacock's tail, the American media also participated readily in the servile flattery of the Mexican master. Yet, as was evident in print media, Rivera's art was revered more for its technical ability to depict Mexico and its culture, …

Pre-Referral Portfolio Assessment For Limited English Proficient Students, Elizabeth Grayce Stevens May 1998

Pre-Referral Portfolio Assessment For Limited English Proficient Students, Elizabeth Grayce Stevens

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

What can be done to ensure that the needs are met of children who are limited in proficiency of the English language? Such is the familiar query of educators and professionals alike. In fact, one elementary school principal stated that this question often presents itself as the first item of business when administrators meet together (Marian Waterman, personal communication, October, 1997). How do we know where to place a child? How do we evaluate progress? When progress is limited, how do we know if the child requires special education services? The answers lie in appropriate assessment.

Looking Through A Paradox An Environmental History Of Two Mormon Communities, Jenna Howick Tilt May 1998

Looking Through A Paradox An Environmental History Of Two Mormon Communities, Jenna Howick Tilt

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

"Nature is both powerfully attractive and powerfully repellent,"1 describes the "Western Paradox" as it was first described by Donald Worster in his Under the Western Skies: The West has been an American symbol of independence, equality and self-preservation from its earliest day, but that freedom had a price. The scarcity of water in the arid West shackled these free spirited adventurers as they became slaves to canals, dams and irrigation ditches.2 Their natural spirit seemed to be defied by the world of technology and machines, which they sought to leave behind by coming West. Yet, by coming to …

Therapy Videotape Presentation For Eating Disorder Clients: Development And Evaluation, Benita J. Quakenbush May 1998

Therapy Videotape Presentation For Eating Disorder Clients: Development And Evaluation, Benita J. Quakenbush

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Eating disorder clients show low motivation, poor follow-through, and inordinate premature dropout rates in treatment. Earlier studies support the use of pretherapy training to help clients understand the tasks and challenges of therapy. However, a pretherapy intervention, such as showing prospective clients a video that outlines recovery issues and themes, had not yet been developed specifically for the prevalent, recalcitrant problem of eating disorders. Thus, of particular interest to clinicians who treat eating disorders may be the development of a theoretically sound, pretherapy videotape that outlines recovery issues.

One of the purposes of this study was to review prior investigations …

Preschool Children's Expectations For Parental Discipline, Angie Geertsen Graham May 1998

Preschool Children's Expectations For Parental Discipline, Angie Geertsen Graham

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many factors influence preschool children's expectations for parental discipline. Parent characteristics such as personality, values, social class, and disciplinary methods can affect the expectations children have for parental discipline. Children's ability to understand and interpret parental messages can also influence how they will respond. All of these factors need to be taken into consideration in order for effective communication between parents and children to occur.

In this study, preschool children's expectations for parental discipline were examined by using puppets to reenact three different types of disciplinary situations: prudent, moral, and social-conventional. Children, acting as their mother, used puppets to role …

The phenomenon of youthful sexual offending has received increased attention in recent years in the state of Utah. As a result. programs have been developed to treat the sexual offender within residential treatment centers. However. the efficacy of these programs had not been examined prior to the initiation of this project. The success of the programs has been assessed by examining recidivistic activity as measured by post-treatment criminal histories. The results of this study indicate that the sample of clients departing from treatment in Utah in the year 1995 has a recidivism rate of93.2% for sexual criminal behavior, as of …

An Exploratory Study Of The Termination Process In Marriage And Family Therapy, Jennifer H. Childers May 1998

An Exploratory Study Of The Termination Process In Marriage And Family Therapy, Jennifer H. Childers

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to explore and better understand termination in the field of marriage and family therapy, as well as to generate a working model of termination. Data were obtained from a total of 40 marriage and family therapists (MFTs) licensed in the state of Utah. Two research questions were posed about termination and how client type and treatment progress may influence the termination process: (1) Given that MFTs see individuals, couples, and families, are there differences and similarities across client types in regard to how therapy is terminated?; and (2) Does termination differ in regard to …

Data were collected from participants' files on 22 independent variables, including the primary independent variable, collateral sessions. The dependent variable was the time it took participants to advance through levels of treatment.

A comparison of measures of central tendency for participants who had and those who had not participated in collateral therapy …

Why Long-Term Marriages Last: A Review, Paula Gabell May 1998

Why Long-Term Marriages Last: A Review, Paula Gabell

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Marriage is a social institution experienced by most adults at least once in their life-time. Like any other type of institution marriage has its own set of norms and roles that are culturally specific to the area where it is being practiced. Marriage has existed in some form in almost every culture throughout time. There are four major types of marriages practiced in the world today. They are polygynous (one husband and many wives), polyandrous (one wife and several husbands), multilateral (several people of both sexes existing as a part of one marriage) and monogamous (two partners usually one male …

Exposing And Reframing Welfare Dependency, Elizabeth Bartle May 1998

Exposing And Reframing Welfare Dependency, Elizabeth Bartle

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Defining the phrase welfare dependency from a feminist perspective offers a way to understand how the rhetoric around the use of this phrase continues to legitimize current changes in Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) while simultaneously diverting the public's attention from the real issues of poverty of and discrimination against women. This article includes a detailed definition of welfare dependency, a brief history of its usage, and a reconceptualization of women's use of AFDC on a long-term basis. This reconceptualization expands on international dependency theory and reframes dependency as interdependency that builds on women's strengths, women's rights, and …

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder In Adolescents And The Use Of Ritalin, Joanne Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to see if a combined stimulant intervention/behavior improvement system facilitated greater gains on achievement tests and on a behavior improvement level system than a behavior improvement system alone with ADHD adolescents. The sample used consisted of 10 subjects classified with ADHD. Subjects were matched for IQ, age, educational classification and placement, socioeconomic status, and family type. Five subjects received stimulants and five received no medication, but all subjects were involved with the behavior improvement system at school. Pretest results were gathered using the KTEA (Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement, brief form) and the student's …

Attitudes Toward Inclusion: A Survey Of General And Special Educators, Debra M. Shinn May 1998

Attitudes Toward Inclusion: A Survey Of General And Special Educators, Debra M. Shinn

Theses and Dissertations

Whether or not the attitudes toward inclusion differ between regular educators and special educators was investigated. From the current literature reviewed, it was hypothesized that special educators would have a more favorable attitude toward inclusion than regular educators. Forty-nine regular educators and sixty-three special educators responded to a questionnaire. The results of an independent groups t test did confirm a statistically significant difference between the two groups. However, the significant difference revealed that, overall, regular educators had a more favorable attitude toward inclusion than special educators.

Over half of the regular educators believed that the challenge of a regular class …
