An Experimental Analysis Of The Effects Of Two Types Of Interpretation In The Context Of An Acceptance-Based Psychotherapy, Lucianne Hackbert
An Experimental Analysis Of The Effects Of Two Types Of Interpretation In The Context Of An Acceptance-Based Psychotherapy, Lucianne Hackbert
Psychology ETDs
While many psychotherapists can agree that interpretive statements are an important aspect of the psychotherapeutic process, there are many divergent ideas about what constitutes a good interpretation and why making interpretations is thought to be an effective therapeutic strategy. Efforts to demonstrate the features and characteristics of successful interpretations have not been conclusive. Recent efforts to empirically demonstrate the immediate effects of interpretation have produced results that suggest that these effects differ significantly across individuals. While interpretation has been included as a component within a variety of treatments with demonstrated efficacy, the question of how interpretation relates to outcome remains …

The Scope Of The Borrower's Liability In A Nonrecourse Real Estate Loan, Gregory M. Stein
The Scope Of The Borrower's Liability In A Nonrecourse Real Estate Loan, Gregory M. Stein
Washington and Lee Law Review
The nonrecourse real estate lender agrees to seek satisfaction solely from the mortgaged property and not from the borrower or any of its equity holders personally. The lender presumably receives consideration for its relinquishment of this important remedy, and it would be unfair for a court later to award the lender a personal judgment against the borrower solely because the foreclosure sale proceeds were insufficient to satisfy the debt. Because the nonrecourse lender cannot reach the borrower's personal assets, the location of the dividing line between the mortgaged property and the borrower's personal assets turns out to be far more …
Proactive Rhetoric, David Stoesz
Proactive Rhetoric, David Stoesz
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The American welfare state is coming apart. In The Rhetoric of Reaction, Albert 0. Hirschman explained how conservatives had used three themes to counter liberal expansion of social and economic rights: perversity, futility, and jeopardy. This essay expands Hirschman's formulation retrospectively by identifying the liberal antecedents---adequacy, equality, and regulation-that prompted the recent conservative assault on the American welfare state. Further, the author presents three themes to thwart the conservative critique of welfare-mobility, empowerment, and restructuring. As illustrative of "proactive rhetoric", these themes are proposed to guide future social policy in the United States.

Knowledge Utilization In Social Work And Legal Practice, Karen M. Staller, Stuart A. Kirk
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The gap between knowledge generated by systematic inquiry and its eventual use by practitioners has been a concern in social work for several decades. Explanations for the gap have been identified as the orientation or attitudes of practitioners, the character of professional education, and the nature of scientific inquiry. The structural character of both practice itself and its knowledge base have been overlooked as an explanation. By comparing legal and social work practice, we suggest that characteristics of social work practice and knowledge also impede research utilization.

Catholic Intellectual Traditions And Contemporary Scholarship, James Turner
Catholic Intellectual Traditions And Contemporary Scholarship, James Turner
Journal of Catholic Education
The Catholic university can make a natural home for experimenting with the foundations of knowledge because Catholic scholars retain faith in a God who created the universe and human reason as a reliable God-given instrument for comprehending this creation. The central question is: How can the Catholic university reconstruct itself to bring the resources of Catholic tradition to bear on our common task of rebuilding the house of learning? Our common problem is the fragmentation of knowledge. The Catholic university needs to inhabit the domains of both secular learning and Christian knowledge. The participation of Catholic intellectuals and universities in …

Alaska Justice Forum ; Vol. 15, No. 3 (Fall 1998), Bureau Of Justice Statistics
Vols 11-20 (1994-2004)
A study of Alaska prisoners, described in the Fall 1998 issue of the Alaska Justice Forum, finds that long-term inmates in Alaska prisons show evidence of having experienced a high rate of abuse during their childhoods; the study examined the issue of a “cycle of violence” and sought out correlates of abuse which may have an impact on offense patterns or inmate behavior. A Bureau of Justice Statistics report finds that the number of prisoners under the jurisdiction of federal or state correctional systems grew 5.2 percent during 1997. An Alaska Judicial Council study of felony probation revocation cases found …

U.S. Catholic Schools And The Religious Who Served In Them: Contributions In The First Six Decades Of The 20th Century, Richard M. Jacobs
Journal of Catholic Education
This article, the second in a series of three articles surveying the contributions of the religious to U.S. Catholic schooling, focuses upon their contributions during the first six decades of the 20th century. Through this period, not only did the religious provide the personnel needed to support the tremendous expansion of Catholic schooling, they also stepped forward to provide diocesan and national Catholic educational leadership, pushed Catholic pedagogical theory beyond its traditional European roots, designed new religion curricula, advanced women’s equality, and upheld parental rights in educating their children. These contributions made it possible for Catholic schools to provide Catholic …
