Internet Advertising: New Media, New Models?, Eric James Karson
Internet Advertising: New Media, New Models?, Eric James Karson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Much of what we currently know about consumers' reaction to persuasive attempts (advertisements) comes from studying mass media communications which are largely one-way and image-centered. Internet-based advertising is neither given the focus on information and the ability to narrowly target such appeals (sites), as in direct marketing advertising. Given the emergence of Internet promotions, this is a substantial gap in our knowledge. This research seeks to both extend the boundaries of current direct marketing research (with its predominant focus on who will reply) and the domain of existing persuasion theories and models, attempting to gain a greater understanding of why …
Interlaced Pixel Delta Codec: For Transmission Of Video On Low Bit Rate Communication Lines, Joseph Jr Celi
Interlaced Pixel Delta Codec: For Transmission Of Video On Low Bit Rate Communication Lines, Joseph Jr Celi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
The Interlaced Pixel Delta (IPD) Video Codec is a real time video compression and decompression engine. It is specifically designed to be used for video phone or video conferencing applications that are to be run under very low bandwidth networking conditions. The example network used throughout this dissertation is the Internet where users are typically connected at transmission speeds of 33.3 K bits per second or less. In order to accomplish this goal, the IPD codec must achieve very high compression ratios. This feat is further complicated by the fact that the IPD codec is to be fully realized using …
Loomy: A Platform For Vision-Based Autonomous Driving, Thomas Joseph Kelly
Loomy: A Platform For Vision-Based Autonomous Driving, Thomas Joseph Kelly
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
This thesis describes the conceptualization, design and implementation of a low-cost vision-based autonomous vehicle named LOOMY. A golf cart has been ouffitted with a personal computer, a fixed foward-looking camera, and the necessary actuators to facilitate driving operations. Steering, braking, and speed control actuators are being driven in open-loop with no sort of local feedback. The only source of feedback to the system is through the image sequence obtained from the camera. The images are processed and the relative information is extracted and applied to the navigation task. The implemented task is to follow another vehicle, tracing its actions while …
Long-Term Survivorship In Women With Breast Cancer, Catherine Carpenter Marinak
Long-Term Survivorship In Women With Breast Cancer, Catherine Carpenter Marinak
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
The purpose of this study was to develop a theory of survivorship in long-term breast cancer patients, and a subsequent educational program to assist health care practitioners to guide these survivors. Seven women who had survived breast cancer for at least 10 years, were interviewed over a twelve month period. This qualitative study used Glaser & Strauss's grounded theory method to generate the process of survivorship for these women. The emergent core category, "life's journey" was characterized by two core variables, "caring with self" and "completing the grieving process". The following themes emerged from within these variables: coping strategies, maintaining …
Justice, Justice, Shall Ye Seek: Jewish Warriors In Spain, 1936-1939, Leslie. Shafer
Justice, Justice, Shall Ye Seek: Jewish Warriors In Spain, 1936-1939, Leslie. Shafer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
In 1936, approximately three thousand Americans volunteered to aid Spain fight the Fascist rebellion of Fransisco Franco, and his German and Italian allies. About thirty percent of the volunteers were Jewish--a ratio so large as to be statistically improbable. Why were so many Jews impelled to go to Spain to fight for the Spanish Republic? Many were Communists, Socialists, unionists, and assorted antifascists, determined to stop the fascist threat in Europe. It was also seen as a chance to fight Hitler with bullets, not only words. The religion, culture and tradition of the Jews requires each person to seek justice …
New Materials Based On Metal Complexes Of Bis(Arylimino)Isoindoline, Jay Merlin Rosenberg
New Materials Based On Metal Complexes Of Bis(Arylimino)Isoindoline, Jay Merlin Rosenberg
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Molecular architecture has been used to develop new materials with our knowledge of Bis(arylimino)isoindoline (BAII). Ni(BAII)2,\ Ni(NBAII)2 and Cu(NBAII)(OAc) complexes were prepared and studied using their Crystal packing diagrams and data in order to evaluate $\pi$-overlapping. It is believed that $\pi$-overlapping will occur in complexes with mono BAII substituted complexes and not di-substituted. The first steps have been made in the development of a polymeric BAII complex with the production of an oligomeric BAII (GBAII). The GBAII complex was analysis using a molecular device approach with the use of NMR instrumentation.
Lived Experience Of Sexuality For Post-Menopausal Women, Susan Lynn Taylor
Lived Experience Of Sexuality For Post-Menopausal Women, Susan Lynn Taylor
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Phenomenologic inquiry was used to answer the research question, "What is the lived experience of sexuality for the postmenopausal woman?" Three dimensions of the experience of sexuality were uncovered in the interviewing process. The first dimension was adjusting to postmenopausal puberty. This referred to the physical and emotional adjustment each participant went through while coming to accept and adjust to hormone related changes in their bodies. The second dimension was self perception as related to being and becoming through menopause. This referred to the personal growth that took place in each participant as she navigated through the menopause experience. The …
New Methods For Estimating Fractal Dimensions Of Coastlines, Jonathan David Klotzbach
New Methods For Estimating Fractal Dimensions Of Coastlines, Jonathan David Klotzbach
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
A coastline is an example of a statistically self-similar fractal. A standard characterization walks a ruler of fixed size along the coast and estimates fractal dimension from the power-law relationship between length and ruler size. Multiple intersection can lead to ambiguity in choosing the next step. The standard method always chooses the first intersection along the curve. Variations were developed to choose intersections which highlight geographic properties. The land method measures accessibility to the coast from land at each size while the water method probes water access. Measurements on sections of the East and West Coasts of the United States …
Numerical Study Of Bluff Body Aerodynamics By Vortex Method, Fusen. He
Numerical Study Of Bluff Body Aerodynamics By Vortex Method, Fusen. He
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Vortex methods are grid-free; therefore, their use avoids a number of shortcomings of Eulerian, grid-based numerical methods for solving high Reynolds number flow problems. These include such problems as poor resolution and numerical diffusion. In vortex methods, the continuous vorticity field is discretized into a collection of Lagrangian elements, known as vortex elements. Vortex elements are free to move in the flow field which they create. The velocity field induced by these vortex elements is a solution to the Navier-Stokes equation, and in principle the method is suitable for high Reynolds number flows. In this dissertation, viscous vortex element methods …
Non-Linear Convection Of A Vortex Sheet Past A Cascade Of Airfoils, Den Berg Stanislas Franck Van
Non-Linear Convection Of A Vortex Sheet Past A Cascade Of Airfoils, Den Berg Stanislas Franck Van
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
The interaction of rotor turbulence with the stator is currently believed to be the predominant mechanism of noise radiation from turbofans in aircraft engines. This thesis presents a general method to compute unsteady 2-D potential flows past a cascade of airfoils. The procedure uses source and vortex distributions on the surface of the airfoils, creation of wakes downstream of the airfoils and non-linear convection of the perturbed flow. These features are designed to satisfy a condition of no-flow through the surface of the airfoils and the Kutta condition at the trailing edge of each of these airfoils. The investigation proves …
Notion Of Aggregation, Monika. Saksena
Notion Of Aggregation, Monika. Saksena
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Most popular object-oriented modeling techniques (OOMTs) provide good support for the creation of conceptual models of system behavior and structure. A serious drawback of these techniques is that the concepts and notations used are not rigorously defined. This can lead to the creation of ambiguous models, and to disagreements over the proper use and interpretation of modeling constructs. An important modeling construct that is often loosely defined is aggregation. This thesis presents a precise characterization of aggregation that can help developers identify appropriate applications of the concept. Our characterization is the result of careful analysis of literature on conceptual modeling, …

This study discusses the theoretical and methodological issues in the diversification-performance literature and presents a meta-analysis of 50 studies with 169 separate effects of the diversification-performance relationship. The overall objective of this study was to answer the primary question: What is the relationship between diversification strategies and corporate performance? In addition, this study aimed to determine if the inconsistencies found in the diversification-performance relationship across studies is attributable to moderator variables such as: (1) measurement of diversification, (2) measurement of performance, (3) source of data, (4) time period, and (5) industry effects. A final objective of this study was to …
Performance Of Multicarrier Ds Cdma Systems In A Nakagami Fading Channel, Jifang. Wang
Performance Of Multicarrier Ds Cdma Systems In A Nakagami Fading Channel, Jifang. Wang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
The performance of a multicarrier DS CDMA system is evaluated over a Nakagami multipath fading channel. After the spreading process, the data sequence is applied to multiple carrier rather than a single carrier. Each carrier is provided a corralator in the receiver, and the maximal-ratio combiner is used for the corralator outputs. A bandlimited spreading waveforms are used for self-interference prevention. Robustness to multipath fading and narrow band interference suppression are achieved by this type of configuration. A comparison is made with a single carrier system in the presence of interference.

Para-Aminophenyl Alumina: A New Stationary Phase For High-Performance Liquid Chromatography, Mincs-Elie. Calixte
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Surface-modified alumina containing covalently-bonded p-aminophenyl groups was prepared by refluxing chromatographic grade alumina with p-aminophenylphosphonic acid in n-butanol. The resulting material, p-aminophenylalumina (PAPA), was evaluated for use as a stationary phase in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). When used with mobile phases consisting of acetonitrile and water, retention of solutes on the PAPA phase exhibited normal phase behavior, as evidenced by the increases in solute retention times with increasing percentages of acetonitrile. Excellent separations of carbohydrate mixtures were obtained on the PAPA stationary phase. Comparisons of the chromatographic properties the PAPA phase with those of commercial aminoalkyl silica stationary phases …

Optimizing Body-Proximate Telecommunications Devices In Direct And Multipath Propagation, Kazimierz. Siwiak
Optimizing Body-Proximate Telecommunications Devices In Direct And Multipath Propagation, Kazimierz. Siwiak
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Body-proximate telecommunications devices are examined in both direct and multipath propagation. The study begins with a characterization of standard field strength sensitivity measurement methods for body-proximate telecommunications devices. Original measurements on a group of anthropometrically diverse people reveal that human adults, in a standard pose, are remarkably similar with respect to belt worn sensitivity performance, which motivates and justifies the use of an existing and a newly introduced light weight simulated human body device for testing, analysis and optimization of body worn telecommunications devices. Standard measurement methods using standard open air test ranges are established and validated by international transfers …
Phosphorus Uptake Rates Of A Ceratophyllum/Periphyton Community In A Southern Florida Freshwater Marsh, Kathleen C. Pietro
Phosphorus Uptake Rates Of A Ceratophyllum/Periphyton Community In A Southern Florida Freshwater Marsh, Kathleen C. Pietro
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Net uptake rates of soluble reactive phosphate (SRP) of Ceratophyllum demersum and the dense periphyton mat associated with the macrophyte were calculated by measuring the disappearance of stable phosphorus (30, 50, 100, or 200 μg P/L) from the water column over a one-hour period each month for one year. Two seasonal periods were established based on average photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and length of daylight through the year. ANOVA showed that the uptake rates were significantly affected (P < 0.05) by the amount of SRP added and were greater during the period of increased irradiance. Uptake rates continued to increase, even at spike concentrations equal to 10,000 μg P/L, indicating that maximum uptake was not achieved and that this plant complex is able to sequester even greater amounts of SRP. Estimates of the yearly uptake capabilities of the plant complex for a 525 ha wetland for the 30, 50, 100, 200 μg P/L spike treatments were 27, 55, 103, and 182 kg P/yr, respectively.
Quantum Cryptography And Minimum Disclosure Protocols, Jeffrey William Brooks
Quantum Cryptography And Minimum Disclosure Protocols, Jeffrey William Brooks
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Minimum Disclosure Proofs by Protocol allow a prover to convince a verifier that the prover knows some verifiable secret information, without allowing the verifier to learn anything about the secret. Quantum Cryptography makes use of the quantum properties of light to allow the prover and the verifier to exchange secret information or to commit to a bit value. The ability to commit to a bit value will be exploited for a minimum disclosure proof by protocol. This thesis unites the two cryptography fields.
Power System Modeling And Optimization Methods Vis-A-Vis Integrated Resource Planning (Irp), Mohammad H. Arsali
Power System Modeling And Optimization Methods Vis-A-Vis Integrated Resource Planning (Irp), Mohammad H. Arsali
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
The state-of-the-art restructuring of power industries is changing the fundamental nature of retail electricity business. As a result, the so-called Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) strategies implemented on electric utilities are also undergoing modifications. Such modifications evolve from the imminent considerations to minimize the revenue requirements and maximize electrical system reliability vis-a-vis capacity-additions (viewed as potential investments). IRP modifications also provide service-design bases to meet the customer needs towards profitability. The purpose of this research as deliberated in this dissertation is to propose procedures for optimal IRP intended to expand generation facilities of a power system over a stretched period of …
Progress Towards Genetic Engineering Of An Emf-Responsive Plasmid In Yeast, Karin Ann Crenshaw
Progress Towards Genetic Engineering Of An Emf-Responsive Plasmid In Yeast, Karin Ann Crenshaw
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Despite the many epidemiological studies which have shown some effects of EMF on biological systems, there has yet to be any data that indicates the molecular mechanisms by which this effect takes place. My goal was to genetically engineer a yeast strain that would have a clear biological effect to the EMF's. The strategy involved using a yeast strain which requires histone function from a plasmid, and the plasmid construct that has a Gal1 promoter controlling the histone function. The plasmid construct could then be engineered to contain a promoter sequence for a known EMF-repressed gene in yeast, which would …
Policymaking On Violence Against Women In The United States: A Multi-Theoretical Perspective On The Terrorization Of Women, Nancy Meyer-Emerick
Policymaking On Violence Against Women In The United States: A Multi-Theoretical Perspective On The Terrorization Of Women, Nancy Meyer-Emerick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
The purpose of this study of policymaking on violence against women in the United States was to examine beliefs about the causes of violence against women through alternative theoretical lenses in order to compare competing theories of problem definition. An initial multidisciplinary review of the roots of the problem indicated that public policy on violence against women, specifically the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) of 1994, was limited in its response. The primary components of VAWA were to further criminalize violent physical abuse and educate law enforcement and the courts to address violence after it had occurred. The application of …

The objectives of WRAP are: (1) to establish an accurate, consistent, and timely regulatory tool; (2) to track changes in wetland sites over time (i.e., baseline data); and (3) to offer guidance for environmental site plan development. Test results of the WRAP procedure …
Reconstructing Predevelopment Conditions Of Lake Worth Creek Using Historical Maps, Accounts, And Aerial Photography, Susan O. Farnsworth
Reconstructing Predevelopment Conditions Of Lake Worth Creek Using Historical Maps, Accounts, And Aerial Photography, Susan O. Farnsworth
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
This thesis develops a technique that combines the use of historical geography with photo interpretation and physical geography to reconstruct the predevelopment landcover of an urban area in southeastern Florida. This technique differs from traditional map making methods by utilizing Geographic Information System modeling procedures to create a conceptual map and test it against independent historical maps and accounts. Historical maps and accounts provided new information about the historic landscape that could not be deferred from present physiographic information. The resulting maps had more detail about the most highly altered areas than the conceptual map created from physiographic information.
Simulation Study Of Mobile Computing Protocols, Syed Alamdar Ahson
Simulation Study Of Mobile Computing Protocols, Syed Alamdar Ahson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
With the advent of cellular technology and portable computers we are on the verge of a new computing paradigm. This computing paradigm is now widely known as "mobile" or "nomadic" computing. Mobile systems frequently change their point of attachment to the network. Mobile computing systems also need to communicate with the existing pool of information and file servers. Mobility defies the very principles that the TCP/IP protocol suite is based on. We study the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Mobile IPv4 protocol and find it to be a highly scale solution. We study some of the other proposed mobile IP …
Second Order Leaky Bucket Algorithm For Traffic Shaping In Atm Networks, Atul. Bansal
Second Order Leaky Bucket Algorithm For Traffic Shaping In Atm Networks, Atul. Bansal
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) Networks are based on connections that are multiplexed dynamically on a single link. For satisfactory performance in an ATM network, congestion control is extremely necessary to guarantee the negotiated Quality of Service (QoS) for every connection. Traffic shaping is a congestion control mechanism that alters the traffic characteristics of a stream of cells on a connection to achieve better network efficiency by meeting the QoS objectives. We study a model for Traffic Shaping, Second Order Leaky Bucket, which consists of two leaky buckets to police the Sustained Cell Rate (SCR) and Burst Tolerance (BT) for each …
Sediment Layer Tracking Using Neural Networks, Vincent Nicolas Freyermuth
Sediment Layer Tracking Using Neural Networks, Vincent Nicolas Freyermuth
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
The detection of sediment layer interfaces in normal incidence acoustic reflection data is a requirement for automatic classification and geologic mapping of subsurface layers. The detection is difficult because of the constructive and destructive interference caused by the impedance changes in the sediment column and high scattering noise levels. The purpose of this work is to implement a procedure using neural networks that automatically detects the sediment layers from the envelope of acoustic reflections. The data was collected using a sub-bottom profiler that transmits a 2 to 10 kHz FM pulse. The detection procedure is a three step method: a …

The Effect Of Choline Supplementation On Maze Running Ability In Hypothyroid Rats, Jessica Ramer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 1990 - 1999
The effects of perinatal hypothyroidism and perinatal choline supplementation on radial arm maze performance were assessed. Animals were made hypothyroid by the administration of propylthiouracil (PTU) to the mash of dams from prenatal day 15 until postnatal day 15. Choline chloride was administered prenatally in drinking water and postnatally through injections to the pups until day 24. Hypothyroid animals made significantly more reference and working memory errors than did euthyroid animals. Perinatal choline supplementation reduced the number of working memory errors, but not reference memory errors, in both euthyroid and hypothyroid animals.
