Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

A survey of graduates who participated in Project TEAM (School Psychology, Social Work, and Speech/Language Pathology) and Project PREP (Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education) is presented. Graduates completed coursework, seminars and practica that emphasized knowledge and skills related to working with children in the birth through 5 age group and their families. The survey determined in which competencies graduates indicated they were best and least prepared by the program and which competencies were most and least applicable to their present careers. The survey also determined what teaming models the graduates are currently using and would prefer to use in their careers. …

Fatigue: Investigation Of A Human Factor For Regional Airline Pilots, Doug Mikkelsen Jul 1998

Fatigue: Investigation Of A Human Factor For Regional Airline Pilots, Doug Mikkelsen

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

This study analyzed the causes of regional airline pilot fatigue and the impact on pilot performance. An instrument was developed and refined through a field study validation by a panel of experts. The final instrument was distributed to three groups of regional airline pilots. The data supported the literature review, which revealed many causes of pilot fatigue, including flight crew schedules that are not compatible with human limitations; Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) that have not evolved with the advancement of aircraft performance and the public demand for 24 hour availability of flights; and poor personal habits. An analysis of the …

Natural History Of A Saline Mound Ecosystem, Robert R. Blank, James A. Young, James D. Trent, Debra E. Palmquist Jul 1998

Natural History Of A Saline Mound Ecosystem, Robert R. Blank, James A. Young, James D. Trent, Debra E. Palmquist

Great Basin Naturalist

Along the margins of playas in northwestern Nevada, a salt-tolerant plant community occupies mounds that dot a largely unvegetated landscape. In this environment we studied soil development and plant-soil relationships. The mounds, averaging 0.3 m in height, are occupied by the shrubs Allenrolfea occidentalis (iodine bush), Sacrobatus vermiculatus (black greasewood), and Atriplex lentiformis spp. torreyi (Torrey saltbush). Distichlis spicata (desert saltgrass) is the only herbaceous plant occupying this community. Soil salinity decreases with depth in this environment, and content of aqueous-extractable solutes is significantly influenced by site-specific vegetation. Content of silt, clay, and salt in mound surface horizons suggests a …

Survivorship And Cause-Specific Mortality In Five Populations Of Mule Deer, Vernon C. Bleich, Timothy J. Taylor Jul 1998

Survivorship And Cause-Specific Mortality In Five Populations Of Mule Deer, Vernon C. Bleich, Timothy J. Taylor

Great Basin Naturalist

We used retrospective analyses to investigate cause-specific mortality and survivorship among 5 populations of mule deer (N = 168 telemetered animals) wintering in the western Great Basin during 1986–1994. These populations existed under similar environmental conditions, but survivorship functions differed among them. Monthly survival ranged from 0.964 to 0.990, and annual survival ranged from 0.643 to 0.884. The proportion of deaths attributed to predation and malnutrition or anthropogenic causes did not differ among the 5 populations. Predation was the leading cause of mortality; mountain lions were responsible for approximately 90% of the deer killed by predators. No difference existed …

Foreign Currency Judgments: Need For A Proper Legal Regime, Vikram Raghavan Jul 1998

Foreign Currency Judgments: Need For A Proper Legal Regime, Vikram Raghavan

National Law School Journal

Foreign Currency judgments are a recent innovation, no doubt but are likely to be a tremendous boon to the commercial world. In the era of enhanced global trade made possible through breaking down of barriers of all kinds, it would be improper for the law to adhere to rigid and wooden rules like currency and breach date rules. There can be no problem if the currency indicated in an order or award is the same as that is in vogue in the nation. However due to the international nature of dispute settlement, currency expressions may be alien to the place …

Landholding And Household Development: What Do We Know?, Min Zhan, Michael Sherraden Jul 1998

Landholding And Household Development: What Do We Know?, Min Zhan, Michael Sherraden

Center for Social Development Research

This overview of research on effects of land ownership focuses on the economic, personal, and social effects of land ownership of small-scale farmers, often in developing nations, under the assumption that the household is the primary unit of production. A search for relevant studies from different fields of inquiry—economic development, rural sociology, family studies, anthropology, social work, medicine, and others—finds 39 empirical studies addressing the effects of land ownership. Sorting these studies into categories for discussion, we present the existing research on effects of land ownership on (1) level of consumption, (2) economic security, (3) investment, (4) women’s status, (5) …

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

As a part of a National Pork Producers Council educational program, our research and extension team at the University of Kentucky was linked with an independent commercial swine producer to test the NCPIG model against observed commercial on-farm data. This experience provided improved information for model development as well as increased producer insight into the data input needs and potential benefits of modeling. Detailed production information comparisons between the NCPIG model and producer data are presented for summer time conditions to assess the validity of the NCPIG model for simulation of grow-finish swine performance. Results demonstrated that the NCPIG model …

Morphological Development Of 2 Warm-Season Grasses In The Nebraska Sandhills, J. R. Hendrickson, Lowell E. Moser, K. J. Moore, Steven S. Waller Jul 1998

Morphological Development Of 2 Warm-Season Grasses In The Nebraska Sandhills, J. R. Hendrickson, Lowell E. Moser, K. J. Moore, Steven S. Waller

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Morphological development of grasses has numerous implications to rangeland management including the timing and amount of herbivory. The objective of this study was to quantify the developmental morphology of prairie sandreed [Calamovilfa longifolia (Hook.) Scrihn.] and sand bluestem [Andropogon gerardii var. paucipilus (Nash) Fem.] tiller populations. Tier populations of these 2 grasses were studied for 2 years in the Nebraska Sandhills. Plant development was evaluated using a growth staging system which quantifies the development of tiller populations. A morphological growth index for each species was calculated from either the weighted average of tiller numbers reported as mean stage …

Leukemia Inhibitory Factor (Lif): Murine Preimplantation Embryo Development, Implantation Rates, And Skeletal Development, Michael Hayes Mitchell Jul 1998

Leukemia Inhibitory Factor (Lif): Murine Preimplantation Embryo Development, Implantation Rates, And Skeletal Development, Michael Hayes Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) is a pleiotropic cytokine which demonstrates perplexing physiological effects. It has been demonstrated that LIF is essential for implantation in mice. Little is known relating to the manner by which LIF effects pre-implantation and post-implantation development. The objectives of this project were to determine the effects LIF on pre-implantation development, to determine the effects that it may have on implantation rates, successful pregnancy rates, and resorption rates, and to determine the effects that LIF has on the skeletal development of mice. For the embryo transfer experiments, embryos were exposed to test compounds in the transfer medium …

Status Processes And Mental Ability Test Scores, Michael J. Lovaglia, Jeffrey W. Lucas, Jeffrey A. Houser, Shane R. Thye, Barry N. Markovsky

Faculty Publications

The expected consequences of a score on an ability test can constrain individual performance. The authors predict that status processes, including status differences and the differences in rewards and costs that result, will produce differences in ability test scores between high-status and low-status individuals. In three controlled experi- ments, participants randomly assigned low status scored lower on a standard test of mental ability (the Raven Progressive Matrices) than did participants assigned high status. For both men and women, the difference in ability test score between low-status and high-status participants was about half a standard deviation. The results suggest the need …

The Physiology Of Life-History Trade-Offs: Experimental Analysis Of A Hormonally Induced Life-History Trade-Off In Gryllus Assimilis, Anthony J. Zera, Jason Potts, Kari Kobus Jul 1998

The Physiology Of Life-History Trade-Offs: Experimental Analysis Of A Hormonally Induced Life-History Trade-Off In Gryllus Assimilis, Anthony J. Zera, Jason Potts, Kari Kobus

Anthony Zera Publications

Adult Gryllus assimilis given an analog of juvenile hormone exhibited reduced flight muscles and enlarged ovaries similar to those found in naturally occurring flightless individuals of species that are polymorphic for dispersal capability. Control and hormone-treated (flightless) G. assimilis did not differ in the amount of food consumed or assimilated on any of three diets that differed in nutrient quantity. Thus, enhanced ovarian growth of flightless individuals resulted from increased allocation of internal nutrients to reproduction (i.e., a trade-off) rather than from increased acquisition of nutrients. Compared with flight-capable controls, flightless G. assimilis also had reduced whole-organism respiration, reduced respiration …
