Habitat Use By Parturient And Nonparturient Caribou Of The Mentasta Caribou Herd, Neil L. Barten Aug 1998

Habitat Use By Parturient And Nonparturient Caribou Of The Mentasta Caribou Herd, Neil L. Barten

Biological Sciences

I compared habitat use and diet characteristics among preparturient female caribou (Rangifer tarandus), and between parturient and nonparturient caribou during and after parturition, in the Mentasta Caribou Herd, Alaska, to explain movements by parturient females just prior to giving birth. I monitored 39 radio-collared females in 1994 and 40 animals in 1995. I estimated forage biomass, collected forage for determination of nitrogen and in-vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), and collected fecal pellets to calculate indices of diet composition and diet quality at sites used by caribou. I also recorded sightings of predators throughout the study area. During peak parturition, females …

Legalizing Performance-Enhancing Drugs, Richard C. Crepeau Aug 1998

Legalizing Performance-Enhancing Drugs, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

By the time the remaining riders rolled down the Champs-Elysees Sunday afternoon, this year's Tour de France had become the Tour de Drugs, an international pharmacology festival. What should have been the continuation of the French national celebration over the World Cup, turned into a shameful display of rule violations, poor sportsmanship, and police tactics worthy of a banana republic. Some writers were calling it the Tour de Farce.

Identification Of A Functional Homolog Of The Yeast Copper Homeostasis Gene Atx1 From Arabidopsis, Edward Himelblau, Helena Mria, Su-Ju Lin, Valeria Cizewski Culotta, Lola Penarrubia, Richard M. Amasino Aug 1998

Identification Of A Functional Homolog Of The Yeast Copper Homeostasis Gene Atx1 From Arabidopsis, Edward Himelblau, Helena Mria, Su-Ju Lin, Valeria Cizewski Culotta, Lola Penarrubia, Richard M. Amasino

Biological Sciences

A cDNA clone encoding a homolog of the yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) gene Anti-oxidant 1 (ATX1) has been identified from Arabidopsis. This gene, referred to as Copper CHaperone (CCH), encodes a protein that is 36% identical to the amino acid sequence of ATX1 and has a 48-amino acid extension at the C-terminal end, which is absent from ATX1 homologs identified in animals. ATX1-deficient yeast (atx1) displayed a loss of high-affinity iron uptake. Expression of CCH in the atx1 strain restored high-affinity iron uptake, demonstrating that CCH is a functional homolog of ATX1 …

The Effects Of Personalized Dietary Education On Glycosylated Hemoglobin Levels In Adult Diabetic Patients, Lacey Gentry Aug 1998

The Effects Of Personalized Dietary Education On Glycosylated Hemoglobin Levels In Adult Diabetic Patients, Lacey Gentry

MSN Research Projects

Diabetes mellitus is a complex and multifactorial disease process with numerous debilitating outcomes if improperly managed. This chronic illness requires continuing medical care and education to prevent acute exacerbations and to reduce the risk of long-term complications. The primary manifestation, hyperglycemia, can be the result of various elements. One major cause of hyperglycemia is inappropriate dietary intake which results in detrimental short- and long term effects. A glycosylated hemoglobin measurement can be utilized as a marker in monitoring long-term glycémie control. This quasi-experimental study examined the effect of personalized dietary education on glycosylated hemoglobin levels in adult diabetic patients. The …
