Molecular Analysis Of Microbial Diversity Within Yucca Mountain, Yingchun Wu
Molecular Analysis Of Microbial Diversity Within Yucca Mountain, Yingchun Wu
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Yucca Mountain is the proposed site for a high-level nuclear waste repository. As part of the site characterization project, an estimation of microbial diversity was conducted. In this study, the 16S ribosomal DNA sequences of culturable isolates were determined and used for tentatively identification of bacterial strains. The results of identification by 16S rDNA sequence data were also compared to MIDI analysis, an independent phenotypic approach for bacterial identification; It is accepted that culturable strains only represent a small portion of microbial community in the environment. In order to eliminate bias associated with cultivation, total DNA was extracted from rock …
The Relationship Between Managerial Holdings And Performance: An Empirical Study On The Restaurant Industry, Young Kwi Kim
The Relationship Between Managerial Holdings And Performance: An Empirical Study On The Restaurant Industry, Young Kwi Kim
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The relationship between managerial stock holdings and performance, measured by profitability, operating efficiency, and stock return, was examined for the publicly traded restaurant companies during the period of 1995-1996. Additionally, the study investigated whether the degree of association between managerial ownership and performance, as measured by the same variables, differs across three groups identified by the range of managerial ownership; The empirical results support that managerial ownership has a positive impact on most of the performance variables (i.e. operating efficiency and profitability). Firm size, a control variable, was also found to be significantly associated with profitability, operating efficiency, and stock …
Anorexia Nervosa: An Exploration Of Early- And Later-Onset, Jennifer Claire Duddy
Anorexia Nervosa: An Exploration Of Early- And Later-Onset, Jennifer Claire Duddy
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Children with anorexia nervosa have often been overlooked or misdiagnosed because of the lack of understanding and clarity surrounding early onset. This study was aimed to help clarify ambiguities by exploring the similarities and differences of early- and later-onset anorexia nervosa. Results from case studies of a female child, adolescent, and adult diagnosed with anorexia nervosa are presented. Findings from the case studies indicate several similarities between the two onsets such as comparable demographic characteristics, diagnostic features, symptoms of associated mental disorders, personality characteristics, and etiological factors. Findings also infer some differences that include variance in prognoses, severity of physical …
Physician-Assisted Suicide: The Courts Leave It To The States, David Wayne Newton
Physician-Assisted Suicide: The Courts Leave It To The States, David Wayne Newton
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
In Vacco v. Quill and Washington v. Glucksberg, the Supreme Court ruled that laws in New York and Washington prohibiting physician-assisted suicide violated neither the Due Process nor the Equal Protection Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment. The Court overturned decisions from the Second and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeal. The Court stated these decisions do not prevent a state from enacting legislation approving assisted suicide, but there is no protection of such under the Constitution. This thesis examines the legal reasoning used by the two Courts of Appeal in their decisions and the Supreme Court in its decision. There is …
A Diachronic Analysis Of Porotic Hyperostosis In Prehistoric Populations Of Northern Chile, Maria Sloan Hart
A Diachronic Analysis Of Porotic Hyperostosis In Prehistoric Populations Of Northern Chile, Maria Sloan Hart
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
A macroscopic analysis of 604 skeletal remains was undertaken at the Museo Arqueologico de San Miguel de Azapa (MASMA) in order to ascertain the rates of porotic hyperostosis in the prehistoric populations of northern Chile. Porotic hyperostosis has been recognized as being a useful indicator of nutritional stress, in particular, iron-deficiency anemia. In the Americas, this pathology has primarily been associated with maize-dependency and pathogen load. Contrary to expectations, results reveal that pre-agricultural populations have 93% of porotic hyperostosis while the agricultural populations show a rate of 66%. This data does not support the maize-dependency model. It is suggested, instead, …

Waccara's Utes: Native American Equestrian Adaptations In The Eastern Great Basin, 1776-1876, Stephen P Van Hoak
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The equestrian adaptations of the Western Utes of the Eastern Great Basin were distinct from the stereotypical Plains Indian adaptation to the horse. The range and mobility of the Western Utes was enhanced by their acquisition of horses, but the Utes did not abandon their diversified subsistence system to specialize in buffalo hunting as did many Plains equestrian groups. Western Ute equestrian adaptations changed and evolved throughout the nineteenth century in response to environmental, cultural, economic, and political issues. Waccara's Western Utes represented the most conspicuous stage of Native American equestrianism in the Eastern Great Basin, and the success of …

Health Care Needs Of Sheltered Homeless Women, Mary Ellen Gauthier
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Identification of health needs of sheltered homeless women is a vital step in assisting this vulnerable population to productive members of society. The purpose of the study was to determine the health care needs of sheltered homeless women in LasVegas. Few studies have been done focusing on the health needs of sheltered homeless women. Dorthea Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory of Nursing provided the theoretical framework for this descriptive study. In order to identify health needs, fifty women participated in structured interviews where both objective and subjective data were collected. Frequencies were calculated in order to describe the population and identify …
Predictors Of Exercise Behaviors In Nursing Students, Eileen K Gemmell
Predictors Of Exercise Behaviors In Nursing Students, Eileen K Gemmell
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Physical activity has been identified as a major deterrent of many diseases, and is one of our nation's top priorities for health promotion. The purpose of this research study was to determine whether personal factors and perceptions of the benefits of and barriers to exercise, as selected factors of Nola Pender's Revised Health Promotion Model (1996), predict exercise patterns in a convenient sample of A.D.N. and B.S.N. nursing students (N = 311). A predictive design was used; The students' mean score for exercise behaviors was 2.14 (on a scale of 1-4), which indicates inconsistent exercise. The most frequently cited benefit …

A Comparison Of Resting Metabolic Rates Among Cardiovascular Fit, Muscularly Fit, And Sedentary Men, Katherine Durand Heimburger
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Resting metabolic rate (RMR) was studied in 29 cardiovascularly-trained (CV), resistance-trained (WT), and sedentary men (Sed) between the ages of 18 and 35 years. The hypothesis was that CV (n = 9) and WT (n = 10) would have higher resting metabolic rates than Sed (n = 10). RMR was measured by indirect calorimetry for 20 minutes in a fasted and resting condition. Expressed per kilogram of body weight, the mean RMR for CV was 3.205 {dollar}\pm{dollar} 0.357 ml/kg min, while those of WT and Sed were 3.032 {dollar}\pm{dollar} 0.481 and 3.005 {dollar}\pm{dollar} 0.642 ml/kg min, respectively. Expressed per kilogram …

Analysis Of Courtship Behaviors Of The Desert Tortoise, Gopherus Agassizii, Rebecca Lynn Holte
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
General descriptions of courtship behavior have been published for the desert tortoise, Gopherus agassizii. However, the amount and sources of variation in courtship behaviors have not been documented. I examined courtship behavior by analyzing videotaped interactions between captive males and females. I calculated duration of three courtship phases (trailing, subduing, and mounting) and quantified the number and rate of rams and bites. Male courtship behavior changed with increased courtship experience, and smaller males showed more variable behavior than larger males. Larger males bit small females at higher rates than did smaller males. Courtship varied in response to female size. Large …

Federal Regulation Of Tobacco Products And Products That Treat Tobacco Dependence: Are The Playing Fields Level?, Joseph A. Page
Federal Regulation Of Tobacco Products And Products That Treat Tobacco Dependence: Are The Playing Fields Level?, Joseph A. Page
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Company A is thinking about launching a traditional tobacco product, perhaps a cigarette or a smokeless tobacco confection, with a new ingredient, ingredient level, or ingredient mix that in the past has never been sold. Company B contemplates putting on the market an innovative medication, medical device, or dietary supplement intended to help consumers to free themselves from physical dependence on tobacco products. Company C ponders the possibility of introducing a smoking product whose novelty derives from express or implied marketing claims that the product will decrease or perhaps even eliminate physical dependence on tobacco, or reduce other risks associated …

Quantitative Methods For Assessing Change: Application To Condom Use, Kerry E. Evers
Open Access Dissertations
This study attempts to understand more about how to quantitatively assess longitudinal change within the Transtheoretical Model applied to the area of condom use among college students. A total of 215 sexually active male and female undergraduate students completed both assessments one month apart. Measurement development was conducted on the Condom Use URICA scale, which was then used in a cluster analysis. A four cluster solution was reliably replicated across two random samples (R2=.99), and the clusters were then examined in terms of their external validity using MANOVAs. The four clusters showed significant differences on variables associated with …
On The Meaning And Impact Of The Physician-Assisted Suicide Cases. (Symposium: Physician-Assisted Suicide: Facing Death After Glucksberg And Quill), Yale Kamisar
Articles
I read every newspaper article I could find on the meaning and impact of the U.S. Supreme Court's June 1997 decisions in Washington v. Glucksberg' and Vacco v. Quill.2 I came away with the impression that some proponents of physician-assisted suicide (PAS) were unable or unwilling publicly to recognize the magnitude of the setback they suffered when the Court handed down its rulings in the PAS cases.
