"To Sew Or To Sow?” European Gender Images And Development In Rural Ecuador, Barbara Grunenfelder-Elliker

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

This thesis examines the impact of a gender specific Swiss development project on Andean artisans women who struggle to intensify their craft production in the face of an increasing subsistence crisis characteristic among rural small producers around the globe. The selection of a project which has proven sustainable over a number of years allowed the author to conduct fieldwork in three different settings (1992-1995): among two hundred artisan women from eleven rural communities in Ecuador's Azuay province, who embroider table linen and apparel for export; among Ecuadorian and expatriate Swiss development specialists in Quito and Cuenca; and, to a limited …

To Develop And Implement A Quality Assurance System Based On Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (Haccp) To A Cook-Freeze Operation: Research Project, Denisa Baca Jan 1998

To Develop And Implement A Quality Assurance System Based On Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (Haccp) To A Cook-Freeze Operation: Research Project, Denisa Baca

Theses : Honours

The purpose of this study was to identify and develop a suitable quality assurance system based on Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP), which was implemented to the ‘cook-freeze' operation, currently employed at Healthcarc Foods. In addition, the quality assurance system was implemented as a systematic approach to food quality, and as a means of ensuring food safety. The samples, which consisted of all the chicken dishes, were used in the development of the HACCP plans comprising of flowcharts and HACCP control charts. These dishes are regarded as 'high risk', in terms of microbiological growth, and therefore, were chosen to …

The In Vitro Propagation Of Seagrasses : Halophila Ovalis, Ruppia Megacarpa And Posidonia Coriacea, Melissa Grace Henry Jan 1998

The In Vitro Propagation Of Seagrasses : Halophila Ovalis, Ruppia Megacarpa And Posidonia Coriacea, Melissa Grace Henry

Theses : Honours

Seagrass communities are of high ecological and economic significance. They provide a nursery area for commercial and recreational juvenile fish and crustacea. Seagrasses also play an important role in influencing the structure and function of many estuarine and nearshore marine environments. Unfortunately, the decline of seagrasses, as a result of human impact, has increased in recent years. This decline has become a major problem throughout the world. Current methods used to restore degraded seagrass beds are limited, the most promising being transplanting material from healthy donor beds. This approach is expensive because it is labor intensive and damages the donor …

Detection Of Rancidity In Peanuts, Sophe Williamson Jan 1998

Detection Of Rancidity In Peanuts, Sophe Williamson

Theses : Honours

As peanuts age, the lipid component deteriorates, and the peanuts become rancid. The Health Department of Western Australia has received numerous complaints from consumers who are unsatisfied with the quality of peanuts they have purchased from certain grocers. Presently there is no standard methodology for detecting rancidity m peanuts, thus enabling grocers to continue selling peanuts of poor quality. In an attempt to overcome this problem, a standardised methodology needs to be developed, which will enable offending grocers to be prosecuted The three methodologies trialed were the Peroxide Value (PV), Acid Value (AV), and Fatty Acid Profile (FAP) methods. In …

Current Trends In Designing A Therapeutic Milieu For The Victims Of Alzheimer's Disease, Nancy J. Allen

Theses

The increasing awareness of the need to appropriately manage victims of Alzheimer's disease has created an explosion of special care units across the country. This research project was designed to investigate the most current trends in caring for these individuals and the complex issues that are involved in the creation and operation of a therapeutic environment. Several existing Alzheimer's special care units in the St. Louis area are examined and compared. The results of this survey reveal the status of these units and how they compare to the desired therapeutic milieu described in this exercise.

Ireland's Divorce Bill: Traditional Irish And International Norms Of Equality And Bodily Integrity At Issue In A Domestic Abuse Context, Anthony T. Barnes Jan 1998

Ireland's Divorce Bill: Traditional Irish And International Norms Of Equality And Bodily Integrity At Issue In A Domestic Abuse Context, Anthony T. Barnes

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

On November 24, 1995, the Irish population voted to ease Ireland's constitutional ban on divorce by means of a constitutional amendment. The new amendment and the bill that effectuates it give Irish citizens a limited legal right to end their marriages for the first time in Ireland's history. The limits surrounding Irish divorce consist of a significant waiting period, a living-apart requirement, and a slant toward mediation.

This Note explores the predicaments of abused spouses and the unique risks that Ireland's divorce limitations pose to spousal abuse victims seeking to end their marriages. This Note argues that the limitations of …

Development Of Banded Sunflower Moth (Lepidoptera: Cochylidae) And Sunflower Moth (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) On Three Diets, Jawahar L. Jyoti, Gary J. Brewer Jan 1998

Development Of Banded Sunflower Moth (Lepidoptera: Cochylidae) And Sunflower Moth (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) On Three Diets, Jawahar L. Jyoti, Gary J. Brewer

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

A comparative study of the effects of sunflower moth diet, banded sunflower moth diet, and a modified sunflower moth diet was conducted on banded sunflower moth, Cochylis hospes Walsingham, and sunflower moth, Homoeosoma electellum (Hulst). Developmental times and survival to the pupal and adult stages were measured for each diet and pest species. Modified sunflower moth diet with incorporated sunflower leaf tissue gave faster developmental times and a higher percent pupation and adult eclosion for both sunflower moth species than either sunflower moth diet or banded sunflower moth diet. The modified sunflower moth diet that incorporates sunflower leaf tissue provides …

Teaching Law Students Through Individual Learning Styles, Robin A. Boyle, Rita Dunn Jan 1998

Teaching Law Students Through Individual Learning Styles, Robin A. Boyle, Rita Dunn

Faculty Publications

(Excerpt)

Teaching can be rewarding, but it can also be frustrating when some students fail to grasp the material. Professor Robin A. Boyle of St. John’s University School of Law has been teaching Legal Research and Writing in small sections of approximately twenty to thirty students for four years. She, like many of her similarly exasperated colleagues, has repeated the same course content by using either lecture or collaborative learning, and has observed some students doing well, whereas others continued to perform poorly. Then, Dr. Rita Dunn was introduced to the law school faculty and suggested that law professors incorporate …
